Yuk yuk yuk.

My cat has recently decided being a house cat isn't enough for her and roams the back alley of our block of houses.
She now has fleas!

DS has bites on his ankles and I'm horrified. I have got the cat a newflea colloar and put spot on repellant on her.

But I am itchy thinking of this, she sleeps on the sofa, on any bed that takes her fancy... how can I 'clean' them of any fleas or eggs? Bleurgh!

if you kill all the fleas on her (such as using frontline of something which stops them breeding) then you shouldn't have to worry about the house because cat fleas can't live on anything but cats so they may bite you but they can't live on you. No idea how long the life-cycle of a flea is though? Not long I guess.

However I think you can buy things to spray on your stuff to kill the fleas.

picklepie555 · 13/08/2008 17:28

Frontline is the best, kills them dead on contact with the animal so any new ones jumping on to him will die too, thus breaking the circle and any living in the house will therefore die when they go to have a bit of lunch on the back of the cat. (Don't worry anyone who has cats/dogs have had fleas in the house at some point, even my most neurotic of friends' cats have had them) I know it makes you feel 'ewwww!' but they go and will be gone for 3/4 months with this stuff, and prob won't come back. You don't even need a prescription for this anymore. you canget it here

MyCatHasFleas · 13/08/2008 17:33

Okay I have alrady put the spot on repellant on her, will I still be alright to use the frontline too?

How long do fleas live anyone know?

Glad it's school hols, ds's ankles look awful!

I've just used Johnson's Flea Fogger to get rid of fleas in the house. Expensive but effective.

Sodding cat

Itsthawooluff · 13/08/2008 17:47

Plus vacuum thoroughly, it helps to suck up and eggs lurking in the carpet etc.

ProfYaffle · 13/08/2008 17:49

Oh yes, and I've put a flea collar in the vacuum cleaner bag.

MyCatHasFleas · 13/08/2008 18:03

Oh god I have just ordered the FrontLine and winced at the price how much is the flea fogger??

Can I stick a flea collar in my dyson?
Am hoovering cat fluff and dirt up every sodding morning anyway so thats no problem. Grr!

"sodding cat " my sentiments exactly!

Flea fogger just over £5 per can, one can per room. I used it because it's the lazy option, easier than spraying carpets or using powder or something.

I didn't even choose to have a cat, it was dh's before I moved in - double

MyCatHasFleas · 13/08/2008 18:13

Well seen as it's ds with the bites its his room (mainly bed) I'm more worried about. {guilty mother emotion}

Where did you get the flea fogger from?

OP posts:
SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 13/08/2008 18:16

oh where do you get that flea fogger? we need it!! damn cat! every time i get the fleas off the dog the bloody cat brings more in!!! and he has a flea collar.

ProfYaffle · 13/08/2008 18:18

Most pet shops have it although they tend to sell out quick at this time of year, I had mine reserved when their delivery came in! It's in a bright pink can.

ProfYaffle · 13/08/2008 18:20

this is it

MyCatHasFleas · 13/08/2008 18:37

Thanks everyone of to de-flea!

We've just flea fogged the whole house. B&M bargains have packs containing two cans (will do two rooms or one very large room) for 2.99 at the moment. Its on offer.

MimsyBorogroves · 12/08/2017 08:37

Indorex flea spray (for the house) is brilliant and breaks the cycle for a year. It's on Amazon and vetsuk etc for less than a vets will supply it. It's more expensive than B&M etc, but it's worked far better for us.

MimsyBorogroves · 12/08/2017 08:39

Frontline has also been a bit useless for a lot of people - there is an argument they're resistant to it.

Advocate from the vets is better.

RubyReins · 26/08/2017 21:31

We are on flea hell. A rat got into the house through a broken drain and lived in our bedroom for a week before we caught it... It left fleas. Place has been sprayed by the pest man four times now including one douse with a potion so toxic we had to move out for three days (that and I am 35 weeks pregnant which complicates matters from a treatment point of view). We have flea traps down and we are still catching about 20 a night. We have two cats but one has been MIA for ages and the other lives outside and never comes inside so treating either of them with frontline/advocate etc etc is almost impossible. At my wits end now. Spent a fortune on sorting this out and getting replacement bedding etc and the end still isn't in sight. My legs look like corned beef such is the extent of the bites. Want this over!

1981trouble · 26/08/2017 22:09

We have had fleas many times.

Spot on - frontline is the best and can be used once a month roughly. It doesn't work effectively enough for us though.

Hoover before you treat the house, the vibration wakes them so the treatment then gets the alive ones, if you treat then Hoover you Hoover up the spray and leave the critters to wake and munch on you.

Worth speaking with the vet as they can generally prescribe the good stuff!

We actually use the injection for each cat, costs about £40 and supposedly lasts 4 months (last done 2 years ago and not needed since😀, before then we would have it done prob once a year). The injection makes any fleas infertile so they don't breed and die out. Whereas the spot on kills the fleas but flea eggs are a nightmare to get out of everything.

Fozzleyplum · 26/08/2017 22:16

Treat the cat with something like Broadline (on prescription from the vets). It makes the cat poisonous to fleas.Keep up the treatment by repeating as directed- the one I use has to be applied every month.

Buy Indorex spray; I got a dual pack from Amazon. Hoover the whole house, having sprayed Indorex in the hoover hose and bag first. Treat the whole house with Indorex to kill any fleas and eggs in the carpet and furnishings. Keep flea combing the cat to keep it flea free. It's a slog to break the flea cycle, but this method works.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/08/2017 07:38

Frontlines not been effective for years.

Advocate still works.

MargaretCabbage · 27/08/2017 07:46

We got a flea infestation despite using Frontline so we switched to Advantage. I washed everything I could on a hot wash and vacuumed twice a day. Sprayed everything with Indorex. I also bought a tub of diatomaceous earth and sprinkled it over the carpets every night, and chucked a bit on the cats too. I felt like I was never going to get rid of them, but it did work!
