What small household fixes have made everyday life noticeably easier?

I’m between jobs at the moment and have decided to use some of the time to basically snag my own house.

I’m going through every room and making a note of all the little things that have mildly irritated me for YEARS, but which I’ve somehow just accepted as part of life. You know the sort of thing - not actual problems, just things you regularly curse under your breath and then continue living with for another five years.

So far I have:

  1. Ruthlessly slimmed down the kitchen cupboards so I could lose one cupboard and fit a tumble dryer. Every winter I normally spend approximately 46% of my waking hours hanging damp clothes around the house and rotating them like prize livestock, so I’m disproportionately excited about this.

  2. Reorganised the Tupperware so every container now lives WITH ITS OWN LID. No more rummaging through 17 lids while slowly losing the will to live.

  3. Thrown out about 12 random, ancient, slightly raggedy towels that had been granted permanent residency in the airing cupboard. It now has SPACE. Things are FOLDED.

  4. Replaced the sieve that hasn’t had a handle since approximately 2020. Why did I just... live like that?

  5. Put bigger shoe storage by the door, so we no longer have the traditional hallway shoe landslide.

  6. Rewired a switch so it finally works the way you instinctively expect it to work rather than requiring a tiny moment of irritation every single time.

Honestly, none of this is exactly world peace, but the cumulative improvement to my quality of life is ridiculous. I keep thinking, WHY DID I PUT UP WITH THIS FOR SO LONG?

So humour me: what tiny, boring, seemingly insignificant thing have you changed/fixed/bought/reorganised in your house that has made you disproportionately happy?

I want the really mundane ones. The things nobody is putting on Grand Designs but which have genuinely made your day-to-day life better.

Basically, tell me what else I should be wandering around my house looking for 😂

I'm militant about plastic storage boxes, we have a standard model of small medium and large and nothing else is allowed!

My biggest recent win is a fixed 3 week meal plan. It takes into account if I'm WFH that day, what evening activities the children have, who needs to be fed etc. Then that just cycles around every 3 weeks. No more meal planning or deciding what to eat each day. Then batch cook on Sunday evening, freeze some of that for future weeks and take some previous meals out the freezer for that week.

Also Tesco now let's you create your own custom lists, so I've created one per meal and then the online order is just a case of once a week looking at the next week's meal plan and going down each meals list.

It's massively reduced the whole mental load and time taken to sort out food for everyone.

How do you think of enough meals for 3 weeks? I struggle with doing one weekly plan what sort of meals

Lots of recommendations for the Lakeland tubs but the link people are posting just takes you to 10x 750ml rather than the mixed size selection?

Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I’ve not RTWT) but I was so sick of the corners of fitted sheets pinging off the mattress and having to pull them back on every damn morning. I’ve replaced them with M&S extra deep fitted sheets - total gamechanger. If you have a Sparks card and wait until they do a 20% off homeware a few times a year, they’re very cheap too.

I bought deep bed fitted sheets from Habitat. As you say game changer. The only thing I struggle with now is the king size duvet cover 🎃

Loving this thread! I'm only on page 11 but have already been to buy a baking tray rack, a tiered shelf thing for under the sink and a new side-by-side bin with recycling section. We have been in the habit of placing items for recycling next to the sink to be put in the outside bin "at some point". This will be a game changer.

As part of my snagging review, DH has been gently lowered into accepting that hanging our new curtains today will be so much better than leaving it until the weekend. Happy days.

We have a four weekly, that changes seasonally !

but we eat a lot of continental dinners. Cold meats, veg, bread, cheese that sort of thing, and one night a week is 'freezer fodder' as the kids have a club so we're time poor. Basically means there's only 2 or 3 actual meals on the plan each week.

I'm just here to pick up tips. I seem to live in chaos and I'm all lid no container when it comes to tupperware! Still haven't binned the lids though 🤣

I’m so happy you said this! I thought I was the only one. I can’t bear to throw the lids out, just in case!

Easy - just vary the theme.

Mon is mince - wk1 spag bol, wk2 chilli, wk3 shep pie

Tues is curry - wk1 red Thai, wk2 masaman, wk3 Keralan

Wed is pasta - wk1 arrabiata, wk2 carbonara, wk3 puttanesca

Thursday is jacket pot night - different toppings each week

Friday - legume, bean, nut based meals

Sat - fish based meals.

Sunday - diff roast each week chicken, lamb, beef

On my list is the kitchen taps, hot and cold taps are the wrong way round. I’ve got used to it but I often forget to tell tradespeople or visitors. Thankfully it takes a few seconds for the water to start warming up.

Would you mind sharing your 3 week meal plan please? 🙏🏼

We think in categories:
Curry
Pasta
Mexican
Fakeaway
Pie/pastry
Roast/mash
One tray
Batch
Slow cooker

Pick 7 categories each week depending on what's on and a recipe for each, we have staples for each category.

Calasa · 21/09/2026 16:48

I have painted blackboard paint on the inside of two kitchen cupboards. One is for the shopping list and one is just a general to do list. Its incredibly handy and because you see the lists all the time it makes it easier to remember things.

We have all lights on tapi plugs which work with the alexa. Including the outdoor christmas lights (and the indoor Christmas lights). I have set routines for them all or can just tell alexa to turn them on/off. It's really useful.

I'm in the process of trying to reduce our microplastic exposure so have chucked away all of my non stick pans/baking trays etc and have bought decent pans and pyrex baking trays. I've also stopped using tupperware and cling film and instead use beeswax wraps which are reuseable and much better for the environment (and save money in the long run).

Ive also sent all of my black plastic kitchen utensils to the charity shop and have replaced with wood and metal.

Calasa · 21/09/2026 16:51

and Ive replaced all of our lightbulbs with power cut lightbulbs. When the power goes out the lights stay on!

That sandwich toaster you never use is perfect for reheating samosas - they come out hot and crisp as if freshly made.

Notgonnalieaboutthis · 21/09/2026 17:20

Not about storage or mealtimes but since banning all sweet food from the house eg chocolate, biscuits, ice cream I’ve lost half a stone. I’m always reaching for a sweet hit when I feel stressed but can’t do it anymore. Feels so much better to have lost some weight and not have cravings for sugar.

If you have alexa, are you aware that you can use it to make shopping lists, to do lists or any other list you want?

We find it much easier to tell alexa to add something to the list as we go along rather than having to stop and write it down. Whoever shops can then check the list. I'm notorious for writing a shopping list and getting to the shop to find I've left the list at home! Alexa avoids this.

We also have an Alexa to do list which is good to capture the things you think about that you know you are going to forget about!

What magic is this?
I have never heard of these.

I had a phone charger in my car that was too long and the one on my bedside table was too short so swapped them !

BadBones60 · 21/09/2026 18:38

Not sure if has already been included as not RTFT but if like to use hangers when drying washing on line, these are good

My siblings, our partners and my mum have been doing Secret Santa for years now it has genuinely improved Christmas.

We use a website that randomly allocates everyone a person, and you can add things to your own wish list so whoever gets you has a few decent ideas. We normally set a fairly generous budget, but it still works out cheaper than everyone buying random bits for everyone else.

The big win is that everyone gets one proper present they actually want, and each person only has one gift to think about, find and buy. So it’s cheaper, far less faff, and the quality of present is much better.

It also dramatically reduces the annual circulation of mugs, scarves, novelty socks and smellies that nobody really wanted but everyone politely pretends to love.

Honestly, it’s been a huge efficiency win on pretty much every front, less money, less shopping, less mental admin, better presents and considerably less unwanted tat entering the house. 😂

Could you please tell us the website?

I was the same until recently (years of hunting for a matching lid!!)

Mine are sorted and tubs/lids are numbered as pairs 😬 Feels very grown up to look for Lid 3 and Tub 3!

Omg lid 3 and tub 3 is GENIUS!! And yet so simple I cannot believe I have struggled through life with the inability to match a single lid to any of my tubs. No pairs ever exist. Like socks.

@DustyWindowsills Tell me more about the dismantable @boiler cupboard please. I had to rip the old boiler cupboard apart with my bare hands when the new boiler was fitted.

I have a dismantable boiler cupboard. It was made by kitchen installer who fitted out the utility. It's a huge cupboard. In the bottom is the boiler, the pipes go up the back. There are shelves that just lift out and it's easily accessible for service. It's also completely hidden.
Pictures. Excuse mess but ...
