How do you manage dishes with a dishwasher in the utility room (quite boring)

If the dishwasher is in the utility room and uou only have a small sink in the kitchen, how do you transport dishes to & from the kitchen?

Do you rinse in the kitchen and drip through or use a trolley and a drainer with a tray

Or what

Seems v impractical to me. The only houses I’ve come across this arrangement in have a second dishwasher in the kitchen or…have help.

WonderingWanda · 15/08/2026 23:38

I don't have this set up but even if I did i wouldn't be rinsing the dishes first. Just carry them straight to the dishwasher scrape left over food off and put them straight in.

JustGiveMeReason · 15/08/2026 23:40

I found it a right pain when we moved into this house and the dishwasher was on the other side of the kitchen.

I would try to rearrange things - including being willing to swap cupboard space - so that it was by the sink.
It would be much easier to have stuff in a cupboard in the utility room.

KatyMac · 15/08/2026 23:50

Yes - im not getting my head round it

But uts a kitchen/lounge so there would be noise

Use a tray? Why can't you just carry them through and load the dishwasher? You shouldn't be rinsing your stuff before you load either.

WildCherryBlossom · 16/08/2026 09:34

Is it a rental or do you own. If you own, I would be thinking about reconfiguring in the longer term (although I appreciate the cost of doing work is very high and it might not be immediately possible).

A tray would be a good start.

HamBap · 16/08/2026 09:38

We have this, we just carry them, we don't rinse first. Means we get our steps in when we empty the thing and having a dishwasher in the utility is better than none at all - look for the positives 😁

Sorry im designing and trying to work out why it would be a good idea!!

I suspect it isnt

A washing up bowl ?

pastadish · 16/08/2026 09:45

I would move the dishwasher to the kitchen. Even with it being a kitchen lounge dishwashers aren’t that noisy like a washing machine

WineCharm · 16/08/2026 09:45

The washing machine should go to the utility and the dishwasher in the kitchen, if possible. I don't see a practical way around this especially if there is no sink in the utility room.

You can hardly hear our dishwasher.

BCBird · 16/08/2026 09:47

I moved into my house and put the dishwasher in utility and washing machine in kitchen. I soon realised the error of my ways and swapped them. Is this not a possibility?

WildCherryBlossom · 16/08/2026 10:20

We always put our dishwasher on a timer to go on overnight (cheaper electricity tariff) so noise isn’t an issue at all.

It’s a terrible idea. Put it in the kitchen, switch it on when you go to bed

Phoenix1Arisen · 16/08/2026 10:28

Every fire brigade in the country warns against running anything with a heater overnight or when the occupants of the house are sleeping. The risk of a heating element starting a fire is very real.

macaroon8 · 16/08/2026 10:36

Ours is in open plan living area and it's mostly virtually silent apart from at the end of the cycle ehen the door pops open and makes me jump every time. Put in the kitchen

BalakayAARon · 16/08/2026 10:36

Put it in the kitchen with a regular sink. Why are you designing it otherwise; is there a lack of space?

Multiporpoise · 16/08/2026 10:40

We had this for a while before a refurb. We’d pull the drawers out, fill them on the worktop and carry them through. Then do the reverse for unloading.
It was a bit of a faff but using trays and carrying stacks of dishes was as well.

Look for a dishwasher that has a silent operation.

I wouldn't have my dishwasher more than 2 steps away from the sink and plate cupboards. That's stupid. Then again I'd give up my oven before I gave up my dishwasher...

It isn’t ! Look at low noise dishwashers

tinyspiny · 16/08/2026 10:44

My sister has a dishwasher in the utility but her house layout is such that the utility room is closer to the dining room than the kitchen and it also has a full size sink .

SunshineAndFizz · 16/08/2026 10:51

Keep a washing up bowl under your kitchen sink. Rise (or not) then put dirty dishes in there. Once it’s full, take to the dishwasher.

JustAnotherWhinger · 16/08/2026 10:52

If you’re designing it can you not fit a sink to the utility room if you want to rinse before going in the dishwasher.

We don’t rinse before using the dishwasher. DW is in the utility room and the crockery and cutlery now live in the utility room cupboards as it was just easier.

You dont need to rinse dishes. Thats what the dishwasher is for
