How do you manage dishes with a dishwasher in the utility room (quite boring)

If the dishwasher is in the utility room and uou only have a small sink in the kitchen, how do you transport dishes to & from the kitchen?

Do you rinse in the kitchen and drip through or use a trolley and a drainer with a tray

Or what

Rinsing plates is wasting water. It also lowers the efficiency of the dishwasher as it thinks things are clean and lowers its temperature

dontmalbeconme · 16/08/2026 11:10

Surely you would scrape (and rinse if you want to, I don't) the plates in the utility room sink if the dishwasher was in there?

Look for a dishwasher that has a silent operation.

I wouldn't have my dishwasher more than 2 steps away from the sink and plate cupboards. That's stupid. Then again I'd give up my oven before I gave up my dishwasher...

We have just done this. Oven used on Christmas day only, no dishwasher so are removing oven and installing dishwasher. We go too sil on Christmas anyway

Armorlux · 16/08/2026 11:20

I sometimes have to check if our dishwasher's still on as it's so quiet.
I'd never have one in a utility room; what a faff.

KatyMac · 16/08/2026 11:28

You've all convinced me

Thanks

new dishwashers and washing machines are uber quiet now - i am another vote for moving it. integrated would have door on front and prob help with noise too.

Jellybean23 · 16/08/2026 11:46

Our dishwasher (Bosch) is virtually silent for most of the cycle. Definitely yours needs to be sited beside the sink.

outerspacepotato · 16/08/2026 12:41

Use a bus tub or two until you get it moved.

beigetriangle · 16/08/2026 12:47

new dishwashers are very quiet.
we often don't hear it at all when it's running.

gingercat02 · 16/08/2026 13:50

My dishwasher is on the opposite side of the kitchen from the sink, but we don't rinse. Plates scraped into the compost or food waste bin as appropriate abd straight in.
The crockery, glasses and cutlery storage is either side and above the dishwasher so putting away is so easy. Where will your storage be?

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 16/08/2026 14:05

We don't rinse as you are advised not to. So, just carry the plates through. Therefore having the dishwasher near the sink would not be a consideration for me, but if new ones are much quieter then having it near the cupboards where the plates live to make unpacking quickly would be my choice.

I’ve got a second dishwasher in the utility that I don’t use all the time, but when I do I just scrape the plates into the kitchen bin and take them through. Never bother rinsing first.

thetinsoldier · 16/08/2026 16:01

We moved the dishwasher to the kitchen. It was totally inconvenient before.

Hatty65 · 16/08/2026 16:04

I don't rinse dishes before putting in the dishwasher.

You take your dishes through - scrape any leftovers into kitchen bin and then stack them in the dishwasher in the utility room out of sight. When it's full, it goes on.

I'm not sure why/how this is an issue?

OhBettyCalmDown · 16/08/2026 16:48

Another one that doesn’t rise before either so I wouldn’t be fussed about it being near the kitchen sink. Emptying it would bother me more as all the plates and cutlery live in the kitchen

CatBusStop · 16/08/2026 18:33

I have this, rented house and it’s the only place we could put it. It’s annoying but so much better than no dishwasher… I just carry the stuff through as and when, and then it’s DS’s job to empty it.

Helpwithabuildingissue · 16/08/2026 19:04

We put a butlers sink and dishwasher in a utility with small circular sink in kitchen but the utility was right next to the kitchen so it wasn’t really an issue, just a few extra steps when emptying but meant the noise of washing machine & dishwasher was contained behind another door.

Tortephant · 17/08/2026 13:27

I haven’t read any responses op, just your post.

A dishwasher in the utility is MARVELLOUS.
it keeps the kitchen tidy and clean.

re rinsing plates, unless particularly needed for a roasting pan or something I don’t rinse.

Having said that a proper utility would normally have a sink anyway. So if you’re hasn’t perhaps you could convert one of the units to a sink. All the plumbing is there already so that wouldn’t be expensive and would be money really well spent.

TeaAndStrumpets · 18/08/2026 07:24

I think it could work if you have a place to stack dirty dishes that is not in the way of cooking and food prep. We are doing this with a peninsula opposite the pantry/ utility door, so just a few steps. We're having a huge catering sink and crockery storage near the dishwasher.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 18/08/2026 11:57

Our dishwasher is in the utility room, where there is also a sink, and it's immediately adjacent to the kitchen.
I do not recommend this arrangement! Put the dishwasher in the kitchen, where it belongs. I don't know what I was thinking, and I'll never do it again.
