What do you do with wet dishcloths waiting to be washed?

Also wet towels. And flannels. We have a wetbag for the bathroom for flannels as we use a lot but it feels like we always have manky old dishcloths hanging around waiting to be washed. I'm sure there must be a better system than our non-system.

I hang them out to dry because I worry about bacteria growing when they’re damp and hanging around. When I’ve collected several, I then wash them.

Shittyyear2025 · 03/08/2026 16:59

Just bung them in the washing machine until the next load?

Towels go over the bannister to dry then back on hooks. Flannels hang over the shower, they don't get washed every use!

Loveinbloom · 03/08/2026 17:00

I hang them out to 'dry', then put them in a bucket in the utility until I have enough dishcloths and tea towels to make up a boil wash.

Pashazade · 03/08/2026 17:00

Throw them in the washing machine and they get done with whatever goes next. But then I’m a heathen and don’t believe in separating my colours from my whites! I only do special washes for a very small number of items. So 90% of our washable items get the same treatment.

orangehandles · 03/08/2026 17:01

They go on the floor in front of the washing machine and are put in the next load.

Peridot1 · 03/08/2026 17:03

I have a small metal basket on the counter in the utility room for tea towels etc. and I drape them over that until they are dry and then put them into the basket until I wash the.

NewYearVibes · 03/08/2026 17:05

I hang them on the towel radiator and collects them to wash. But I put them into the same wash as clothes. So at most they'll be out for a day.

OriginalUsername2 · 03/08/2026 17:05

An old washing up bowl under the sink, just chuck them in and wash them all at the weekend.

This is what we do too. It helps that our washing machine is in the utility room, so they aren't in the way.

PaperPanama · 03/08/2026 18:25

Draped over a bucket (it happens to live by the washing machine) until dry, then kept in the bucket until the next towels load. All towels get washed together, hot wash, no fabric softener.

Tickets25 · 03/08/2026 18:26

Keep them in the dishwasher!

Mt563 · 03/08/2026 18:27

Bucket in the utility and into the next wash, I usually do one a day so not there long

MachineBee · 03/08/2026 18:32

Put them in a bucket of diluted Dettol or Milton.

scorchedgreenery · 03/08/2026 18:33

Hang them on the edge of an old bucket kept in the garage for this purpose. When dry pop in laundry basket.

itsgettingweird · 03/08/2026 18:34

Towels get hung on hooks in the bathroom to dry. If you want a cleaning out the dirty but dry one in the laundry basket.

Tea towels go straight into the machine. The trick is to have light coloured ones that can be washed with anything!

I do this too.

MotherofPufflings · 03/08/2026 18:34

We have a little fold out drying rack in the utility so hang out to dry there. Then I have a pull-out bin cupboard, also in the utility, where they can be hidden out of the way until I have a load for a hot wash. If you don't dry them out then they get smelly (and mouldy) really quickly, especially in this weather.

100% the same with me. I will only ever wash something separately if it is (a) brand new and not colour fast and (b) expensive. Otherwise, it's every soul for itself in my washing machine!

Poppystone · 03/08/2026 18:35

Dishcloths go in the washing machine until it's next run.

Towels are changed and washed once a week, I've never understood how it's possible or desirable to be changing them more frequently.

The same with flannels. Hung over the taps so they dry between uses, but washed with the towels.

Mossstitch · 03/08/2026 19:22

I just throw them in the washer for the next wash but I use a lot (use cheap flannels actually) and the washer is on every day so not there long enough to get smelly.

ThingsCouldBeEasier · 03/08/2026 19:36

Thanks, everyone. I've always washed dishcloths with towels/bedding at 60 degrees, which is one reason why they hang around for so long.

@Popystone,I find I need to wash the kitchen hand towel every couple of days (but I do spend a LOT of time cooking).

Manky things like dishcloths and tea towels go in a bucket of Napisan and get washed at 40 all together when there is enough. Towels and facecloths are all white and have a 60 wash with added washing soda and a spoonful of Napisan.

greengreengrass3 · 03/08/2026 21:27

We put our daily flannels on the towel rail in our bathrooms and then chuck them in the laundry basket when dry. Dish cloths similar, put them over the middle sink or out side to dry and then put them in the washer ready for the next load.

Seashor · 03/08/2026 22:24

As a previous poster said, I put mine in the dishwasher which gets to such a high temperature it kills all bacteria. Then they go in the washing machine.

Beachbeach · 03/08/2026 22:27

Just leave mine on the side. Use one dishcloth a day or two. No longer than Two.

usually do one wash a day so they go in there.

shock horror I also just chuck bathroom cleaning clothes in the next wash of clothes. Nothing has ever happened to us
