Limescale on glass shower doors

EsselteFilingBox · 09/06/2026 16:28

Hi everyone,

I'm in a fairly hard water area and I have such a build up of cloudy limescale on the shower doors it's really annoying me! They always look like they need a clean even when they're freshly done. I've tried Viakal, LG, cleaning little and often with Vinegar, rubbing every week with Cif.

Is there a good limescale cleaner I've missed or do I have to just accept it?

Thanks in advance all.

Limescale scraper! I’m in the same boat. I find removers only work if it’s done immediately or on taps if left to soak. My shower screen quickly becomes covered in limescale water marks and turns cloudy so i use a scraper every so often and it does work.

TheWardrobeIsThere · 09/06/2026 16:41

Are you leaving them to work long enough? I second the scraper.

As a preventative try using a window vac to remove the water after each shower. It would take 30 seconds and save you scrubbing. I actually window vac my entire shower cubicle every day, it looks like I never shower. I use a minky towel to buff.

Or squeegee the water off and dry the glass.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/06/2026 16:42

A squeegee every time it’s used has made the biggest difference for us. I used to clean it with flash multipurpose and a plastic scrubby thing. Now we don’t really need to.

game changer.
wear gloves!

I got it at tool station if you don’t have amazon.

personally I use the Bosch window cleaner (better than the karcher) on my shower door and then the minky window cloth to dry the edges and chrome.
that works perfectly.

but the teens…. They never squeegee or wipe so I have the same awful build up to get off in the main bathroom.

Try Nancy Birtwhistle's homemade Pure Magic cleaner.
It has citric acid in it which is great at removing limescale.
Just remember to rinse it off.

EsselteFilingBox · 09/06/2026 20:45

These are all brilliant suggestions thank you all. I do squegee down the shower after every use but getting my teens to do it is another thing altogether. I will investigate scrapers - thanks again!

I use HG limescale remover, also in a hard water area. Then once clean I use AutoGlym and it stays clean for ages.

Nordic89 · 10/06/2026 09:57

You need Ubik to remove limescale not Viakal which can ruin chrome. If you can't remove it whatever you try, it may have developed glass cancer which you cannot remove.
A small orbi pad will easily remove scale with just water. It's lovely ke a magic sponge but better

Slawbans · 10/06/2026 13:37

if it’s soap scum rather than lime try washing up liquid and vinegar

DeadBug · 10/06/2026 13:41

Once you've got it clean, shaving foam or washing up liquid rubbed on the screen helps to keep it clear and clean.

Meadowfinch · 10/06/2026 13:48

We live on chalk, our water is hard. I use a shower squeegie immediately after I shower, to remove all the water, and I spray the screen once a week with Viakal.

Two years in, my screen is clear.

Once a month I put tissue around the base of the taps, soak it with vinegar and leave it for an hour, which removes any limescale from the join between metal and porcelain.

user5683926547 · 10/06/2026 14:00

Shower squeegee helps loads.
Flash spray/wipe/done is fab - we are a really hard water area and I find this is the best I’ve ever used.

OhamIreally · 10/06/2026 18:00

I’ve got a Karcher window vac which I use on the screen after every shower. Someone on Mumsnet drew my attention to Rainex which is ostensibly for car windows but I tried it on the shower screen and was in absolute raptures about how amazing it looked (and I’m not particularly house proud)

SisterTeatime · 10/06/2026 18:06

I clean it with a washing up scrubber and some limescale remover then the car window stuff. I find if I’ve got it nice and wet, it seems to be better than sort of just polishing it.

I do window vac it, but not every time. The window vac is worth the money though, it’s great when you clean the outsides of your windows with lots of water.

mambojambodothetango · 10/06/2026 18:20

Squedgee every single time you have a shower straight away. Our screen still looks fairly new after 10 years from doing this (hard water area).

EsselteFilingBox · 10/06/2026 20:59

I have never thought of using the car windscreen stuff on the shower doors - brilliant!

You need the E cloth shower cleaning kit from
Amazon, it’s like bloody magic! It’s two cloths, one wet to clean , one dry to buff. I spray a mix of white vinegar on the glass, leave for one minute then use the cloths.

Tronkmanton · 10/06/2026 21:15

Spray Viakal all over, leave to soak, then scrub with wire wool. Nothing else works.

Wonderknicks · 10/06/2026 21:18

I second Nancy Birtwhistle's recipe. That & a squeegee.
My problem is black mould in the silicone.

SisterTeatime · 10/06/2026 22:15

HG mould remover works on the silicone. It’s not very nice to use but it does work.

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/06/2026 22:16

Brillo soap pads

pinkpony88 · 10/06/2026 22:27

I live in a very hard water area and swear by harpic limescale remover. The one in the blue bottle. I clean the shower screens whilst I’m in it and squirt the gel over the screens then rub it all over the screens with a sponge. I leave it 2 mins then rinse off. Works a treat every time.

PinkCatCushion · 10/06/2026 22:29

Flash shower cleaner. Spray it on, then wipe off with a micro fibre cloth. Don’t rinse.
Squeegee off the water droplets after a shower.

TofuTuesday · 10/06/2026 22:30

Powdered citric acid, make into a paste. Amazing
