Anyone else annoyed by tall pint glasses toppling in the dishwasher?

I really didn't know where to post this but I have 6 pint glasses that have heavy bottoms. They are tall and won't stack in the top of the dishwasher without flipping over.
I'm there carefully and slowly closing the dishwasher door trying not to flip them and then there they go with a clatter.
I know there are more things to worry about but it annoys the fuck out of me.
What possessed Tesco to think this was a good design.
Rant over and I feel better for it.
I feel even better now that I've searched for a picture to attach and they seem to have stopped selling them.
Hurrah!
You've all been saved from the annoyance.

I'm more mindblown that product designers often don't seem to think about user experience when designing products. Isn't that their job?

Packaging is my particular bugbear. So much of it seems hard to use and get the product out.

fairislecable - I just upend the water holding mugs in the dishwasher, empty other things while the puddle drains off, then put them away. Saves the puddle from spilling outside the dishwasher.

Just put them on the bottom rack like a normal person. Confused

Or just wash them in the sink with a bit of Fairy. Have people forgotten washing up in the sink is an option?

That's my solution too, but it only works for me if I've emptied the bottom rack first (which I think is the logical way to empty a dishwasher). My DH, unfortunately, is adamant that the top rack needs to be emptied first. And since it's my job to load the dishwasher and his to empty it, the water-holding mugs are his problem to deal with. But it's not just that the mug bottoms hold water, they also seem to accumulate grunge or something from the dishwashing soap. I end up washing the bottoms separately before using them (or the odd times I'm the one emptying the dishwasher)!

This came up on my Facebook just after I posted

SylvanMoon - who on earth empties the dishwasher top down (apart from your DH)?? What is wrong with people.
This is worthy of a separate thread.

Mine only grunge when the filter needs cleaning.

My issue is wrong stemmed wine glasses.
I have managed to source some short stemmed ones that look like they're from the 1970s.

This thread is too funny. Im early 40s and havent lived at home with a dishwasher over 20 years and yet I saw the thread title and immediately knew what you meant! And with the pools of water on mugs and other things. Immediate childhood rage welled up inside me! Who knew that was laying dormant in my brain? I wonder what else I'm secretly cross about...

We use the prongs, glass over the prongs, so a few sit in the middle of the glass and it holds it rigid.

SylvanMoon · 05/06/2026 09:16

That FB hack wouldn't work for my mugs. I have a set of cups with quite deep bottoms.

Whats TA?

And I just prefer to handwash glasses, but honestly (don't shoot) i'm fond of disposable cups.

When the dishwasher gets overused the glasses suffer. They need washing after so I just gave up

I put pint and wine glasses on the bottom rack. Empty the bottom first. Water in the base of upturned mugs gets tipped into the bottom of the dishwasher and a wipe from a tea towel.

I know. I probably should LTB over it, but then I'd have to both load and empty the dishwasher. 😘

I’m glad you have a solution to your problem. I would love a solution to my dishwasher problem which is the underside of mugs being concave and collecting water. Sooooo irritating when unloading, slopping cold water down the front of my cabinets. IKEA have invented coffee mugs with a little cut out on the rimmed underside, I believe specifically for this purpose. Amazing, very Nordic clever. Sadly I mostly drink tea.

I have a potential solution to this. If your top level, you can change the height, have one side up and one down and the water doesn't collect. Hope yours does this like mine!

I have never drunk a pint of anything at home. Half a pint of anything is more than enough.

Get rid of the glasses and buy some nice ones that you like!

My DH has pint glasses for beer. I like them for having a big drink of water beside my bed during the night.
Couldn’t drink a pint of anything else.

Well, I could probably drink a pint of wine, tbf 🤣

Yeah - we have the same ones from Tescos. They are a menace. I will them to get broken on a daily basis! Only two left…
Sainsburys sell a four pack of pint glasses that are the better shorter/squatter size that don’t dishwasher topple.
