my xmil has a similar thing there is always dirt/dust underneath hers. although to be honest not sure how often she cleans under there. hers is a fitted kitchen on legs iyswim

SheherazadetheGoat · 22/06/2008 08:53

thanks! i think it is a none starter on the filth alone.

we have one. it was made in devon and is pine with a butlers sink and big dresser. we sealed around the back and tiled and put a plinth ont he bottom. it suits the age of our house very very (1700 cottage). i like it and will be sad to say goodbye when we move soon!

dylsmum1998 · 22/06/2008 08:56

yeah i dont think i would get one cos i'd be under it all the time trying to keep it clear underneath i think
they do look good and i love the idea you can move them to exactly where suits you tho

SheherazadetheGoat · 22/06/2008 08:59

was it easy to seal the back? that is my main issue. you can get plinths for the front of them.

i'm not sure to be honest, i know xfil fitted it all himself so i'd hazard a guess at not very hard

noddyholder · 22/06/2008 09:02

I have had one and just hoovered! It didn't make any difference to cleaning up in time or effort and looked lovely.

SheherazadetheGoat · 22/06/2008 09:02

oh - [reevaluateds filth]

Sheh I was considering that kitchen myself from IKEA. However when I visited the store to have a closer look I didn't think the quality was that great.

I had loved the idea of a stainless steel worktop as one of those units comes with one, but it was so scratched and damaged, i thought that was an indicator of how it would wear.

They are sold with the idea that you can take it with you when you move. But would any kitchen fit again perfectly in a new house?
I think fitted nicer. You can have a free standing unit like a butchers block or an island to get the look.

admylin · 22/06/2008 09:06

I've been looking at those incase we need a new kitchen - here in Germany you have to supply the kitchen when you rent and of course take it with you when you leave. Stupid tradition but that sort of thing would atleast be less hassle to move around and I think they look nice.

maidamess · 22/06/2008 09:11

Fied Earth have some beautiful but very ££££ free standing units. You could have ONE in your kitchen with fitted everywhere else.

drool

noddyholder · 22/06/2008 09:11

No it wasn't sealed but had a lip along the back of the untis and was tiled.Looked really nice and is surprisingly easy to fit into space but we didn't take it when we sold it was part of the house.

cluelessnchaos · 22/06/2008 09:12

we have a freestanding kitchen on legs, I dont find it really hard to clean I hoover underneath, preferable to a plinth that needs to be wiped down all the time.

noddyholder · 22/06/2008 09:13

I have re designed several kitchens ansd i like a single row of fitted with shelves over and no wall cupboards and then a free standing big dresser. This is the best of both

maidamess · 22/06/2008 09:14

Noddy thats what I've got., but with a zinc topped work station rather than a dresser. Can't be doing with wall cupbaords. Too crowdy.

noddyholder · 22/06/2008 09:16

great minds maidamess I hate fitted and plinths and pelmets so dated and closed in.Light and airy with lots of lovely things on shelves and all your old tat in the cupboards,

SheherazadetheGoat · 22/06/2008 09:19

agree about wall cupboards but we will ahve storage issue so will have open shelving with cupboards at 2m for essential crap stuff that doesn't get used all the time.

I had a free standing kitchen when I was young, free and single and my priority was romance and individuality rather than practicality .

Fortunately I was in another country when my partner installed our kitchen. I got to choose the appliances (on the internet) but he dealt with the fitter... and so we have a very practical and easy to clean kitchen.

I used to have old pine cupboards, chicken wire shelving, pots hanging off the ceiling etc... and all white nid d'abeille drying up cloths, towels etc.

Now I have an all white fitted kitchen but stick in colour with pots of herbs, coloured towels and aprons, wooden bowls/wicker baskets of fruit and vegetables

noddyholder · 22/06/2008 10:28

habitat are lovely freestanding and well made but a bit more £ than ikea i think but better quality
