New washing machine is rubbish

lavendarwillow · 11/05/2026 21:10

I have a brand new Hoover washing machine and it’s absolute rubbish. It has destroyed clothing leaving them stiff, wrinkled, rough, stained and full of bobbles. My old Hotpoint never did this even though I used to overload it. Live in a hard water area, used to use two pods and a good dose of fabric conditioner and our clothes looked like new all the time with the old machine. This new machine has absolutely wrecked everything I’m not sure what to do. Have tried using less detergent, smaller loads even though this is a bigger machine, lowering the spin cycle and all types of settings (even additional ones on the app) but I’m really not happy. Hoover have said as we have passed the 30 day period, they can only send someone to look at it. Am I missing something or are new machines, using less water due to environmental reasons, and in turn ruining clothing?? I don’t even want a repair, I just want the damn thing taken away.

I have a new Hoover washing machine and it's great. So much quieter than my ancient old machine, and no problems with ruining clothes. It does sound like something's not right with it so I'd get the repair person to come and make sure you show them the ruined clothes.

Twasasurprise · 11/05/2026 21:32

It sounds like not enough water is going in. I know for eco reasons that water consumption is reduced, but this seems extreme.

When running a cycle, you could try adding extra water via the detergent drawer after it finishes the water fill. (I used to routinely add the water collected by my condenser dryer/ dehumidifier rather than pouring it down the sink.)

If this helps, it might be a problem with the water fill, such as the tap not being open enough.

@FigAboutTheRulesthe reviews for this machine were great, hence why we got it.

@TwasasurpriseI am starting to think this. Could this be that it is wasn’t plumbed in properly?

A lot of the new machines do crease the clothes more as they maximise they spin efficiency

ate you using the proper programs a basic cotton wash 40c should take between 3.30 and 4 hours

the short programs are designed for smaller loads there great for freshen stuff up but it’s not a proper wash

Twasasurprise · 11/05/2026 21:43

Possibly, or the little tap was nudged towards "closed" rather than "open". Or there is a kink in the inlet hose. (Not an expert, just moved house many times and encountered issues.)

My thought too - check that the water spigot is all the way open, OP, before you rack up any expensive repair or call out bills.

3.5 to 4 hrs! I thought my Samsung 10kg cotton 40° was bad enough at just under 2hrs with 1600rpm! It is about 5 years old though.

Are you sure it’s getting any water at all…?

I hate the longer eco wash cycles. I use three only ( out of nearly a million ha) 45mins, 40d, 60 min 60d, and 15 min express (best thing ever for freshening stuff up). Spins vary from 1.2 to 1.6. No issues. I couldn't wait 4 hours for a wash I'd lose my mind. And no, I will not leave the machine on overnight, nor will I do something else for four hours, the sun will be gone and the rain will start 😊

I wonder if it's the long cycle. Or as pp said a simple plumbing issue.

somanychristmaslights · 11/05/2026 22:07

Im in a hard water area too and the limescale tablets really made a difference. Just the Sainsbury’s ones.

VanillaImpulse · 11/05/2026 22:30

I’m not a fan of new machines. I have a Samsung eco bubble and I hate how you start it on a 2 hour cycle and then next minute you look round and it’s changed to 3.5 hours because of the weight or something! I now have to program it to finish fo t a certain time so it can’t adjust! I’ve also found that fabrics are wearing out quicker like flannels which they never did with my old Indesit one hour cycle one.

Some of the cycles aren't weighed or adjusted on my ecobubble, so you might be able to play around.

I often use Superspeed on mine, which is 39 mins and add a 30 min BubbleSoak, as I find 1hr9m respectable. Mind you, the AutoOptimal on mine is 1hr23, and while it can adjust, I don't find it often adds much at all. Cotton is the least predictable for mine, especially if a heavy towels load, so best avoided if time is a factor.

It’s ridiculous that we are moving backwards in terms of washing machine function. The machine is only 3 months old but Hoover will charge an £80 call out charge if no fault is found and £160 repair fee for things outside the warranty. We’ve pulled it out and checked the water inlet and tap and all looks fine. Does anyone have a newish Hoover washing machine and can you tell me what settings you use? Or does anyone use the Hon app? I just want a non environmentally friendly cycle, that uses the maximum amount of water!! I will save the planet in other ways.

I have a new hisense and its brilliant, best I've ever owned - doesn't even lie about minutes remaining.

maftan · 12/05/2026 10:53

FWIW mine is a very basic Indesit bought last year. I had a Hoover with all the bells, whistles, apps and so on, and it drove me insane. Programs far too long for real life, but in fairness it did a good job -eventually! Anyway it went funny and I decided I was getting a "normal" machine, old fashioned if you like. When I went to the outlet the guy there said that more and more people are looking for something basic, easy and quick nowadays.

Anyway I have two dials, one for program, the other for spin speed and an on/off button and delay start. It is one of the best machines I've had in a long time.

Depending on the program (I only use one of three - and there are twelve!) since there are no digital countdown displays, I put a timer on my watch and voila.

Can't beat the basics.

rwalker · 12/05/2026 11:06

The problem is your comparing apples with oranges
the new washers wash in a totally different way prioritising energy and water efficiency rather than time
not sure how a washing machine can make your clothes stiff

Upstartled · 12/05/2026 11:09

I have a new hoover machine, my All in one, 59 minute setting is my favourite but I modify the spin lower on 1000 rpm.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 12/05/2026 11:11

@maftan I think you and I have the same machine.

I bought it as the previous machine had too many digital displays and that was what went wrong.

Exactly that, far too many bells and whistles on the newer machines, with the potential for many things to go wrong! Hope yours works as well for you as mine does.

Turnitoffnonagain · 12/05/2026 11:36

Not the point, but you say you use 2 pods in a wash, maybe it's too much detergent affecting your clothes? Is its all rinsing away?
Sorry, you said you tried less detergent, pls ignore.🙈

Twasasurprise · 12/05/2026 13:30

What happens if you put just 2 towels in for a wash? Do they come out clean? Do you hear the water filling at the start and during the rinses?

GuelderRoses · 12/05/2026 13:38

Saw the title of your thread and was coming on to say "It's a Hoover, isn't it?" but I see that it is!! Quelle surprise. Ours is also absolutely shit too, and has ruined a lot of clothes. It shrinks some things and stretches others, and it just doesn't seem to use enough water in the drum. The clothes slap around damp and just rub up against one another, getting all bobbled instead of clean. The spin cycles are way too slow on some programmes as well. Ours is a washer-dryer and the drying time is sometimes about 3 hours. 🙄

I'm never buying another one.

Dbank · 12/05/2026 14:11

Hoover and Hotpoint, aren't the brands they once were.. they are now Chinese and Turkish owned and appear designed to be significantly cheaper.

Whilst expense I have found Miele to be a far better investment in the longterm.

There may be a little wire filter in that connector, either on the hose end or in the fitting that can get blocked. Is your water pressure good? It does sound like there has been something wrong from the start.
