Is leaving washing outside for days unhygienic or fairly normal?

Neighbour leaves washing out for days. If it rains it stays out until it’s dry.
personally I think that is minging. What do others think?

Judging by the dirt on my car, yes, it's minging! I have a neighbour who does that too. Bet they're covered in spiders webs too!

Bourneo · 04/05/2026 22:29

Plus it gets wet again from the dew first thing in the morning, so if it's left for days it's getting wet and then dry on repeat. I have no science to back up why this isn't good, other than I don't like the thought of it! But each to their own!

ForPearlViper · 04/05/2026 22:38

Unhygienic or otherwise, why is it your business?

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 04/05/2026 22:51

I once found a bee in a pair of tights I was putting on! Luckily it was a bit dozy and just flew out the window once I’d ripped the tights off in a panic!!
no it is not unhygienic at all. Possibly dangerous maybe 😆

SouthernNights59 · 04/05/2026 23:01

I can't see that it is unhygienic but it's not something I do. I might leave it out overnight in warmer months, but otherwise if it isn't fully dry by the end of the day I bring it in and it dries overnight on a clothes horse.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 04/05/2026 23:10

Rainwater is full of dust and air pollution picked up as it falls. YANBU.

Topseyt123 · 04/05/2026 23:16

Why do you think it is unhygienic? That's nonsense.

Effervescentfrothy · 04/05/2026 23:30

So if it rains during the day on your washing you put it through the washing machine again because rainwater is dirty? How ridiculous.

Looseweightlooseinterest · 04/05/2026 23:42

I regularly put washing out in the evening so it can dry the following day when I am at work 🤷‍♀️Never been a problem.

If washing is left out overnight, It'll get "darked on" and spiders will rub their willies on it.

Spiders have willies? Don’t they get caught in the sticky web? Or do they have tiny spider pants to keep it tucked away?

DrFoxtrot · 04/05/2026 23:55

People take the piss talking about spider willies but my washing would be covered in webs and tiny little spiders if I left it out overnight! Even taking it in after a few hours during the day I have to check for spiders. Maybe I live in a high spider density area 🤔 (Lancashire 😂)

JoyLoveJoyInOrbitNsoul · 04/05/2026 23:55

Does it not acquire a sour smell with the wet,dry wet cycle genuine question?

I’ve never had that in my life.

EBearhug · 05/05/2026 08:37

If it escapes spiders making webs and birds droppings, then who cares? Though even if it doesn't, it's your neighbour's problem, not yours.

Having said that, I wouldn't do it. My mother always said that leaving washing out overnight was slatternly behaviour. (She should see how little I dust!) But seeing how my car can be covered in a thin film of pollen and dust currently, I wouldn't, and while that gets washed off if it rains, I wouldn't leave washing out to get wet anyway.

Sometimes it rains when the forecast says it won’t. Other times I am out! Rather than bring it all in and wash it again, I leave it on the line until it dries.

hobbydrama · 05/05/2026 09:08

I wouldn’t but we have loads of trees, squirrels and birds in our garden so they’d all have a field day. Also rain can be dirty, as it carries dust particles, pollen and the like. And if it’s the Sahara rain then everything on the washing line will be orange!

No.

Namechangerage · 05/05/2026 11:08

I wouldn’t leave it overnight,
just feels wrong. Get dry/damp/dry again and creepy crawlies. I’m a bring your washing in at the end of the day person - even if you’re late home and it’s dark 🤣

No.

Thanks one of life's mysteries solved.🙏

I wouldn't purposely leave washing out to get wet. Sometimes it happens, however. At which point we judge the forecast and decide whether to leave it out or bring it in to dry inside.

violetcuriosity · 05/05/2026 18:56

I weirdly hate the smell of washing when it’s been on the line too long, reminds me of having morning sickness, so I wouldn’t do this but I don’t think it’s unhygienic
