Is leaving washing outside for days unhygienic or fairly normal?

Neighbour leaves washing out for days. If it rains it stays out until it’s dry.
personally I think that is minging. What do others think?

If washing is left out overnight, It'll get "darked on" and spiders will rub their willies on it.

Haha i came on to say this! I sometimes do this if I get caught out by the rain I just leave it to dry out again, was once on the line for 2 days what a minger I am! Honestly just do you and let the neighbour get on with it.

FettchYeSandbagges · 04/05/2026 16:05

Being 'darked on' and the unspeakable spider issue are the least of its worries.

Sunlight bleaches the colour out, so leaving things outside for days at a time will make your clothes fade, especially black items.

Weirdconditionaltense · 04/05/2026 16:05

Been there, done that.. probably wouldn't leave tea towels out for days on end but anything else, why not?

LassiKopiano24 · 04/05/2026 16:06

Are you planning to wear your neighbours clothes?

MotherofPufflings · 04/05/2026 16:07

I don't think its unhygienic. I personally think it's suggests someone who's a bit disorganised or doesn't care much about their stuff. But I also think that caring enough to start a thread about a neighbour's washing is weird (and yet here I am responding to it 😂)

JustSawJohnny · 04/05/2026 16:28

I agree that it's gross BUT I don't know why 🤔

Like, what's gonna happen to it?

Apart from getting darked-on, obviously.

swapsicles · 04/05/2026 16:36

Generally it's fine although if it's dusty rain like you see on cars occasionally it'd need another wash.
I do remember having towels as stiff as boards once after leaving them overnight and not realising how cold it was!
I'd love to dry mine outside but I live in a flat so an open window has to do.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/05/2026 16:37

I’ve left washing out overnight before, but wouldn’t leave out for days.

Purplewarrior · 04/05/2026 16:38

I don’t think it’s unhygienic but I am MN indoctrinated re the washing being “darked on”

AnnaNotherOne · 04/05/2026 16:39

Is “darked on” something people actually say? As in, normal people? I’ve never ever heard it…

Silverbirchleaf · 04/05/2026 16:39

And what dues getting ‘darked on’ actually mean (a term I’ve only heard on mn).

FruityFrog · 04/05/2026 16:42

When it's hot in the summer I wash clothes in the evening, peg them out at 10pm and they're dry by 9am. Meanwhile, I've put another load on to wash overnight...

FunMustard · 04/05/2026 16:56

I really could not care less about this.

Effervescentfrothy · 04/05/2026 16:58

I leave mine out until it dries.

Indianajet · 04/05/2026 17:02

I have never noticed what my neighbours do with their washing.

I am not bothered by the spiders.

My not very into housework, single male friend (he has a cleaner) in his late 40s reminded me to get my washing in the other day before it got darked on! I was flabbergasted as I thought it was just a MN thing and I would put a lot of money on him not being on MN!

It’s not a good idea because the washing never completely dries out and then smells musty. It’s the sort that thing you wish would work but doesn’t really

That's not true. Washing dries perfectly well overnight if it's windy enough.

Yeah I’m pretty disorganised. I don’t see that as a massive character failing really though. There are worse things I could be.

redskyAtNigh · 04/05/2026 17:08

Surely no more unhygienic than a person who ever leaves the house?

if you go outside your whole person and the clothes you are wearing are subject to whatever you think is unhygienic in the general atmosphere.

Assuming you don't instantly wash all your clothes and shower to within an inch of your life every time you return from going out?

<After writing that, realises there are probably some people who do, and they are probably the same as the people who think their neighbours washing is going to become unhygienic if left out for days in the way that it doesn't if just left out for a few hours to allow it to dry>

Agree

outerspacepotato · 04/05/2026 17:10

Do you have no birds there? No bugs looking for a pocket home?

LameStrangeNameChange · 04/05/2026 17:12

I do it because I’m minging. Then my neighbour lights a bonfire and the whole cycle starts again.

notnowmaud · 04/05/2026 20:02

Only if a bird poos on it, and check for spiders in sleeves, otherwise leave it our for as long as you want!

But birds can poo during the day also (and most are asleep at night), plus I’ve never found a spider in a pocket. Also, bugs can land on clothes during the day.

Deadleaves77 · 04/05/2026 21:39

It's not something I tend to do but its not unhygienic. If a bird shits on it you know and it doesn't suddenly become dirty when it hits the 12 hr mark of being on the line

Equally I can't say I have ever noticed how long my neighbour leaves their washing out for
