I know- what a glamorous post!
has anyone purchased/ made storage which is practical, durable and has made their bins less unsightly?

Following your glamorous post with interest! I have 5 full sized wheely bins from our council.

A lot of the solutions online look flimsy and are expensive.

I need a recommendations!

Marmaladegin · 15/04/2026 11:56

exactly my thoughts!

I thought we were bad having 3, 5 is ridiculous! Following for ideas.

SparklyGlitterballs · 15/04/2026 12:05

I have four wheelies and a food caddy. I'd love something stylish but inexpensive to hide them, as they have to stay in the front garden. Following with interest.

Ifailed · 15/04/2026 12:05

As they are owned by the council, I leave them on their property - the pavement. (there is still enough room to get a pram/wheelchair passed).

Parsleyforme · 15/04/2026 12:11

How many bins do you currently have and will that be changing? I heard about the new national rules requiring recyclables to be separated, but haven't heard anything from my council about new bins yet

Financegoddess · 15/04/2026 12:14

This is my MILs storage made out of some old pallets! We’re not getting wheelie bins until later in the year here so we are going to make the same set up. Works well & looks better than just the bins I think?

Doesn't this mean you have to pull a bin out every time you want to put something in it?

Secretseverywhere · 15/04/2026 12:25

A chap local to me makes wheelie bin stores from old pallets. I’ve had mines for six years and it’s still going strong. Was about £70 but I’m rural so that included a higher delivery charge. You see people advertising on gumtree.

Samewrinklesnewname · 15/04/2026 12:29

We have 5 wheelie bins🙄one of this summer’s jobs is to build a fence in front of them.
I thought about one of these prettier stores like pic upthread, but I don’t want to have to pull a bin all the way out every time I need to put something in it

TheeNotoriousPIG · 15/04/2026 12:29

I have something like this: Rowlinson Large Timber Triple Wheelie Bin Storage - 8 x 3ft | Wickes.co.uk (but mine was nowhere near that price!). It does a good job of hiding the bins, and I like the fact that I can lift and prop the lids up if I need to put things in the outside bin. The only trouble is that the lids lift up, and have been partially damaged, in heavy winds.

We are lucky in that we only have two wheelie bins here, plus a trolley of boxes for recycling.

MagpiePi · 15/04/2026 12:36

I would think it is better to store them with the handle facing outward and have the hinge for the lid at the front.

Financegoddess · 15/04/2026 12:40

Like I said this is not mine, it’s my MILS.

The photo was taken when she had it done for demonstrative purposes only.

I’m not quite sure why you all have to pick up on stupid detail when it’s just a solution my MIL has found to save them looking so ugly on their own! 🙄

Redaska · 15/04/2026 13:13

We put ours in a gap in the hedge on frontage so they are partially hidden in a sort of in an 'alcove'. We have four too. I find the wheelie bin stores draw more attention than just the bins themselves, and you either have to have a lid which lifts up for access, or no lid on the store. And as you say, expensive!

Is it stupid detail? I’m not sure it is, one of the primary features of a wheelie bin is that you need to lift the lid up to get the rubbish into it.

It looks nice, but it’s not very practical. You must be able to see that, and I don’t think you need to be so defensive about it. Did you make it?

You leave your rubbish bins on the pavement?

I hate seeing bins cluttering up pavements. So untidy.

Which part of the photo was for demonstrative purposes did you not read? The handles are facing outwards now so it is easier to access. However I am unable to show you a photograph as I am 315 miles away from her!
it works for her and obviously does not please you so I suggest you find someone else to try and belittle.

I don't think anyone was attacking you but your original post didn't say anything about it being a representation.

I didn’t keep on goading. I made one post about it, making a perfectly valid observation, and you’re wildly overreacting to it. You’re extremely rude, and as another poster mentioned, you said nothing about it being for demonstrative purposes.

I’m sorry you’ve decided to be so unkind to a stranger.

We have a bespoke storage where the lid is hinged as well. Plus there is a door on the side.

we never use it. The bins stay in the store shed and it’s no hardship to pull them out to place the bag inside. I even prefer handles facing out. It makes little difference to me.

I prefer having the bins hidden, but if you prefer yours on display for maximum ease of access, that’s also your choice. But the thread is about ideas to disguise them, after all.

RandomUsernameHere · 15/04/2026 15:08

What a good idea for a thread! I need to sort something too, we just did a big house renovation and everything looks lovely apart from the 3 wheelie bins sat on the driveway, plus we have a glass box. It sort of ruins the aesthetic. I think we might be getting even more bins as there are changes coming in next year!

We currently have rubbish, recycling, garden waste and glass. I believe from next year there will be extra bins for plastic bags and food waste in our area. Not sure if that’s the same elsewhere though.

Marmaladegin · 16/04/2026 08:19

Didn’t actually expect a thread about bins to get fiery! @Financegoddessi don’t think your photo was being criticised- it’s very pretty but it’s also helpful to have it pointed out that you wouldn’t be able to lift the bin lids.

so glad others are pondering bin storage. I have just checked that my council have no plans to increase bin numbers. And I hadn’t thought about handles front or back, but I do want to be able to lift the lid when it’s in the cover, so I guess handles back
