I know- what a glamorous post!
has anyone purchased/ made storage which is practical, durable and has made their bins less unsightly?

The wickes one looks great but how do you get it out when the handle's at the back and it has to be lifted over the lip of wood at the front so won't just slide forward

As they are owned by the council, I leave them on their property - the pavement. (there is still enough room to get a pram/wheelchair passed).

That’s awful

I would imagine if you lift the front edge up, the bin can tilt back and wheel over the lip? But very good point, probably still awkward eh.

That’s awful

Why?

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 16/04/2026 11:26

I'm far too invested in this! Our bin gets heavy so wiggling it forward from the front as the handle is inaccessible wouldn't work. I think it needs a store with a lift up roof that you can wheel the bin into (no lip) with the handle facing you and the binlid flipped back on itself so it is open inside the store and you can easily put rubbish in. The bin store roof then covers it so the open bin can't be seen from outside. As long as rubbish is bagged it shouldn't smell

MissAmbrosia · 16/04/2026 11:35

Following for interest. Our new UK house has a small enclosed area at the front which is home to the wheely bin (just 1 for now). DH has put the recycling boxes in the back garden so will need a solution for that too.

Why?

Because it shows your disregard for your neighbours/ community.

This is my MILs storage made out of some old pallets! We’re not getting wheelie bins until later in the year here so we are going to make the same set up. Works well & looks better than just the bins I think?

Now that is an idea! Will have to investigate if there is a purchasable option as that is pretty good!

I have something like this: Rowlinson Large Timber Triple Wheelie Bin Storage - 8 x 3ft | Wickes.co.uk (but mine was nowhere near that price!). It does a good job of hiding the bins, and I like the fact that I can lift and prop the lids up if I need to put things in the outside bin. The only trouble is that the lids lift up, and have been partially damaged, in heavy winds.

We are lucky in that we only have two wheelie bins here, plus a trolley of boxes for recycling.

Was yours sturdy? A lot of reviews mention flimsiness. I don't mind paying if they last well but I begrudge it if they fall apart after a couple of years.

I hate seeing bins cluttering up pavements. So untidy.

I must have an easy life because that is one of the things that pisses me off. Making the area look unsightly rather than their own gardens. I hate the trend of leaving them round the front of a house ! It's just an example of how standards have dropped.
Yours sincerely
Victor Meldrew!
I know I sound like a crank but it really winds me up.

I live in a semi detatched house. The other half of the semi has been converted into 3 2 bed flats. So between us we would have 20 wheelie bins on the pavement! I definitely can't do that!

Aside from one slat snapping when I had to move it to a more sheltered spot during high winds (to prevent the lids from flying off), it's still in one piece 2-3 years later.

This (and many others) has a lip, meaning you have to lift the bin up slightly to pull it in and out, and which could be a problem for heavy bins.

ETA: FinanceGoddess’ MIL set up is much better because it can be rolled in and out.

Marmaladegin · 18/04/2026 16:22

Well yes but it looks like a very tiny rod to roll over? @Financegoddess’ Mil setup means you can’t open the lid which would annoy me more I think

There’s plenty of off the shelf solutions. Just
google “bin storage”.

We have 5 wheelie bins🙄one of this summer’s jobs is to build a fence in front of them.
I thought about one of these prettier stores like pic upthread, but I don’t want to have to pull a bin all the way out every time I need to put something in it

I've been trying to figure out how to make one with a lift up lid, but don't know whether I'm up to it. I currently have four bins.

WearyAuldWumman · 18/04/2026 16:33

At the moment, mine are tucked behind my front hedge (tall enough to conceal them from the outside) but I want to hide them so that I can't see them from my window...Tis a challenge.

I have a big garden, but putting them round the back doesn't work for me - too cumbersome to drag all the way to the front. The side return is too narrow, and then I have a cherry tree and the driveway, so front garden it is.

Squiz81 · 03/05/2026 15:59

They also seem to be designed wrong. They are all made so the lid opens up and away from you, but this would make them really hard to wheel out when they’re full.

muddyford · 03/05/2026 16:08

I'm looking at the woven willow screens so I can just move the screen when I want to move the bin. Mine are out the front as side access too narrow.

I have them and they look fine. Only thing is they can be flimsy and I doubt they'll last too long. Mine need anchoring to something to prevent them flying off in the wind! So I use a bungee cord attached to a tree. 😊I'll replace when I have to, they are not too expensive.

I am grateful for the thread, as I am looking for something more permanent but not huge and bulky either!

MerelyPlaying · 03/05/2026 16:45

I’m just looking for something to cover the bins, I have one a bit like the Wickes one that was here when I moved in, but it’s falling apart now.

The wooden lid lifts up and has a prop, but it’s very heavy and I’m always scared it will fall on me. I haven’t had a problem pulling the bins out, but I live on my own, and the bin rarely has more than one bag in it.

I really wanted a Bluum one, but apart from the price they don’t have a door on the front.
