I’ve just realised that’s all my teenagers football tops still smell at the armpits after they’ve been washed!! Gross.

What can I spray on that area before washing or do they need a higher temperature than 40 degrees?

I use leftovers of listerine bottles (the amount of a lid for one tshirt, directly onto the armpits)

hididdlyho · 21/03/2026 07:03

I spray the pit area of tops with washing up liquid, which seems to help get the oils out. I bought one of those Fairy skip the soak spray bottles when it was on offer about a year ago and have been refilling it with washing up liquid and water since it ran out. I also use bio washing liquid and the laundry disinfectant stuff in the wash.

Another vote here for Dettol Antibacterial Laundry Sanitiser!

Often it is deodorant residue. Try white vinegar before washing.

This
I use a spray (also has lemon in it )
Spray in the pits of my gym kit
Even on a 40 wash it shifts the smell

JacknDiane · 21/03/2026 07:23

Does spraying with white vinegar not affect the fabrics colour?

OhFuckyNell · 21/03/2026 07:30

The dettol does work but I don't like smell

ace for colours does the same job but smells nicer if anyone else gas the same issue 😊

Marmaladegin · 21/03/2026 07:33

i tried listerine on armpits before putting in wash after seeing it suggested here and I find it works

VividDeer · 21/03/2026 07:36

Halo
White vinegar
Dr Beckham odour remover.

Or all 3 for luck!

Tigercrane · 21/03/2026 07:56

Teenagers are a bit stinky.I recommend puttimg detergent on the stinky armpit bit.washing and hanging it outside to dry if possible.

Rocknrollstar · 21/03/2026 08:07

Just to say I bought multiple kits for DS when he was at school and playing three times a week. When he went to uni he only washed his football kit when he came home in the vacations. He told me it wasn’t worth washing as it would only get muddy and dirty again.

Pastlast · 21/03/2026 08:12

I have a small spray bottle with 50/50 white vinegar and water. I spray that on the armpits pre wash

My youngest son’s whole washing it like that, because the idiot stuffs the machine full, and puts everything on a short wash! Words are had.

dementedpixie · 22/03/2026 18:39

I use dr beckmanns deo and sweat stain remover and spray the pits. I add zoflora to the fabric softener bit of the machine too

Ohcrap082024 · 22/03/2026 19:39

Another vote for a bit of Zoflora in the fabric compartment.

perenniallymessy · 22/03/2026 19:46

We tried all sorts on sweaty gym kits and stinky pits. Dettol laundry cleaner helped a bit but didn’t solve it, even halo sports wash didn’t get the stink out.

napisan is my new secret weapon. Soak the stinky kit in hot water with napisan and some biological washing powder for a bit then rinse and wash with the rest of the clothing.

BrickBiscuit · 22/03/2026 21:24

Larrythemonkey · 20/03/2026 08:11

Big glug of white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. I buy the big 5L bottles from
amazon

My local high street ironmongery/housewares stores now stock 5 litre white vinegar, handy as we don't have to negotiate deliveries.

ForPinkDuck · 22/03/2026 21:30

If it doesnt make them itch. Biological washing powder at 60, then line dry all day.

Right2BareArms · 23/03/2026 18:52

Are you using fabric conditioner? If you are, use the white vinegar spray and skip the conditioner.

PotatoHeading · 23/03/2026 19:00

Dylon sports detergent but I only buy when its on special offer as quite expensive. Rest of the time Dettol Laundry Cleanser like others but usually get the own brand equivalent.

Wtafmakeitstop · 24/03/2026 18:28

I had this problem a while back with some very stinky socks. The Dettol stuff worked for me, along with bio detergent where possible.

Soaking in bicarbonate of soda works really well for this, I eventually found

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/03/2026 18:36

For my DS’s sportswear, I echo using Dettol laundry sanitiser.

My DH’s sportswear is on a whole other level of stinkyness and even Dettol won’t shift the smell. The only fail-proof stuff I’ve found is Halo Sports Wash.
