Cleaning the loo brush

I'm almost too at the profoundly humdrum nature of this topic to post, but I do genuinely want to know:

How often do you clean the loo brush and what is your 'method'

(Mine is a haphazard stand it in the actual loo, and then pour bleach in and let it 'steep' in the bleach mixture for a while)

i buy a new one - just can't face cleaning them

hester · 17/06/2008 21:53

OH lord, it's disgusting, isn't it? I hate the thought of having it sitting there oozing germs, specially as my toddler has developed an interest in it. I buy cheap toilet brushes, try to use them as little as possible (I don't mean leave the toilet dirty, obviously, but following the Kim & Aggie advice), doing what you do, then replacing it regularly.

But I'm sure another poster will be along soon to show me up, as every time I turn on Mumsnet I end up hanging my end in shame for my (pitifully low) standards of domestic goddessery.

I have one of those toilet duck thingies where you flush the scrubby bit down the toilet (not v ecologically friendly). Someone will be along in a minute to tell you to ditch it and get rubber gloves, and get in there and scrub. Can't quite face it myself.

bamboostalks · 17/06/2008 21:55

I buy the 50p ones from Ikea and replace every 6 weeks.

brimfull · 17/06/2008 21:55

handlemecarefully · 17/06/2008 22:11

Oh I can't bring myself to keep buying new loo brushes, I have a big enough carbon footprint as it is

I think I'll persevere with what I am doing. Was just wondering if someone had found a better solution

someone asked Aggie this question in The Times on Saturday- she replied- ditch them and buy a set of rubber gloves and clean the loo with those and a cloth that you throw away.

I have NEVER owned a loo brush- I think they are disgusting- all that poo resting in a little plastic pot by the loo. Yuck. In most cases, a dose of bleach gets everything off and if not, puring hot water down works- or failing that, it's the rubber gloves.

FairyMum · 17/06/2008 22:29

you can the loo brushBuy new one!

FairyMum · 17/06/2008 22:29

clean

girlnextdoor · 17/06/2008 22:31

life's too short to clean loo brushes- we must have different poo to everyone else, cos a good slug of Domestos brings everything off!

FairyMum · 17/06/2008 22:35

That makes me wonder about Gillian McKees loo-brush!

mollysawally · 17/06/2008 22:38

Loo Brushes - bleuugghh!

Bleach and bloo is all you need.

blousy · 17/06/2008 22:40

Loo brushes are disgusting!!!!

TsarChasm · 17/06/2008 22:40

I buy new ones.

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/06/2008 22:44

Tchibo has a decent one for £7.50 in a chrome thingy, in shops today..I bought one 3 yrs ago and it came with a spare brush head and is still going strong, not manky looking at all..I smother it in bleach after use and flush it...

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/06/2008 22:45

bloo - yucky stuff, gums up your cistern...also blue loo water is very non-U

Pannacotta · 17/06/2008 22:48

Cleaning a loo brush is a bit grim but necessary.
Bleach and potent products like Bloo are really bad for the environment and kill fish and other marine life.

serin · 17/06/2008 23:10

I'm with girlnextdoor, I can't think of anything more disgusting than a toilet brush?
What are you lot eating that it needs to be scrubbed off the sides of the loo?

A couple of years ago we stayed in a lovely holiday cottage, lovely until we discovered ds2 playing with the filthy toilet brush left festering behind the loo.

mollysawally · 17/06/2008 23:57

MAS - Whats non non-u?

metmoo · 18/06/2008 00:00

put green toilet duck and water in base and soak brush
