Miele washing machine faulty after 4.5 years??

is this normal? Feeling frustrated as this was an expensive washing machine and we are a small household so don’t use it every day - so it really hasn’t been heavily used. Just had someone come out to look and apparently it has a faulty part that will cost ££.

I think the quality of Miele has declined and they don't last as long as the price tag justifies and more - they seem to be coasting on positive stories from people whose 20 year old machines are still going strong.

MidnightPatrol · 04/02/2026 13:39

Happened to mine too.

Had to buy a new one (fixing it doesn’t make sense financially most of the time - ridiculous though that is).

Miele did give me a big discount though (maybe 50%?) - so give them a call.

LauraNorda · 04/02/2026 13:39

If you don't need it every day, why not just buy the cheapest from Argos that will do the job and run it until it collapses.

Should get 5 years out of any brand.

boundarysponge · 04/02/2026 13:43

It depends what the part is, if it’s the bearings it means that you’ve consistently overloaded it.

No, not at all. It’s not the bearings. It’s some water flow sensor thing. It’s ironic because I do relatively small loads and never use even use maximum spin.

Thanks. I am going to wait for the repair people to get back to me with the final cost and then I am going to get in touch with Miele even though they will no doubt try to fob me off.

it’s ridiculous that they provide a 2 year warranty.

I had a Miele that died at the age of 20 and my repairman told me not to bother getting another as they are no longer very well made. I’d just get a cheaper one and expect it to last 6 or so years. Mieles are expensive to fix too!

That is very interesting and also rather depressing.

it feels like everything is so disposable now.

We had a miele washer dryer that was no end of trouble. We had the repair guy out umpteen times when it was still in warranty (five years). When it packed up again soon after the five year mark we were relieved just to get rid of it and get a machine from a cheaper brand.

When the John Lewis guy came to deliver and take away the old one, he was surprised we were getting rid of a Miele, especially as we didn’t get another from them.

We got it because we have had truly great freezer and fridges from them, but I wouldn’t touch a wet appliance from them with a barge pole after that experience.

DressDilemma · 05/02/2026 14:32

My Miele washing machine and dryer each lasted around eight years. We had to get them repaired a couple of times, and eventually the engineer advised that it wasn’t worth fixing them anymore and recommended replacing both.

Fasterthan40 · 05/02/2026 15:00

Miele dryer died after six years of daily use . Miele washing machine still going strong after eight years of daily use and I am crossing my fingers as both were very costly. Had a JL refund on a Miele vacuum that was awful. I don’t trust the brand any more. My parents swore by them but I have had a run of naff appliances and am now happily switched to Bosch and Neff mid range. They have a busy business fixing their broken appliances around here- lots of recently retired rich spending half their lives staying in for the Miele man to come around and fix something else that has gone wrong with induction hob or wine fridge etc..

EverythingIsComputer · 05/02/2026 15:13

My 13 year old Siemens machine died and I’ve just replaced it with a series 6 Bosch. I looked at Miele but the guarantee on Bosch & Siemens (same company) is now 5 years so that’s what swung it for me.

MidnightMeltdown · 05/02/2026 17:04

Never understood why people buy expensive washing machines. Do they wash better than cheaper ones?

I have a basic hot point which is 11 years old and never had an issue.

Eddielizzard · 05/02/2026 17:07

They've really cut back on quality and I wouldn't buy one with a barge pole now. Such a shame as they were great. Very short-sighted too, as they're losing so many customers

EverythingIsComputer · 05/02/2026 22:14

@MidnightMeltdownhang on to it for as long as you can! I think the higher price should get you a better build quality - which seems questionable given the OP and other’s experience - as well as additional features. My new one has a lot of different cycles, eco friendly aspects, a light inside and a function that steams so will reduce the need for ironing hopefully.

Yes, all those amazing cycles you can use yet in reality since buying my new Samsung with a million different cycles, I've only used two of them in two months.

Today I’ve used the the drum cleaning cycle, cottons, steam option, woollens and will use the sportswear one after the weekend. So far so good seeing as it was only delivered this morning so have a bit of a backlog.

FateAmenableToChange · 05/02/2026 22:43

Miele are absolute rubbish and no one seems to be able to repair them. My £2k dishwasher died after 18 months (after months of trouble with it too) and ended up being binned. The Bosch that replaced it is 100x better quality.

idontgetitdoyou · 05/02/2026 23:16

£2k for a washing machine?!! Did it iron and fold the clothes and put them away too?

I've just replaced a Bosch with a cheaper AEG, cost about £400. I only had the Bosch since just before Covid, so exactly 6 years. I was disappointed and had expected it to last longer. However, it was the bearings and I've just read above that I must have been overloading it. I have two sporty teens and DH and we do about 8 loads a week.

Be aware that the current advice is to leave time between cycles for it to cool down.

Machines lifespans are in cyvles/revolutions now.

Gor an average family of 4 i believe its about 4-5 years of use.

Very sad.

My parents old miele washer and dryer lasted from.1976 ish till 2015!

MiloMinderbinder · 06/02/2026 18:50

A two-yer warranty is the norm for most technology, it is the period in which the manufacturer expects to pick up issues that arise from manufaturing. It would be far too costly for the manufacturer to test each product to the point where it would never break down and the price would make the product too expensive for us customers. So, in those first two years we customers are part of the mannufacturers quality control programme, the warranty only covers manufacturing problems. After that, we rely of consumer legislation: "is the product of a reasonable quality?" This is where the Miele brand may agree that their product should serve you longer than 4.5 years. I recommend that you uee "Which Magazine" as a guide to brand quality over time, they are the experts

I replaced my 15 year old Meile washer in ‘25 with a Bosch. I was advised at John Lewis as PP said, they are no longer quality items.

Funnily enough the same happened with Indesit washer I had for the previous 15 years ! (Replaced with the Meile)

Because they expect the built quality to be better and therefore last longer.

We had a couple of cheaper machines (including a hot point) that both died after 2-3 years with minimal washing, just me and dh. So we splashed out on a Miele which lasted 20+ washing for me, dh and 3 kids, so when that died, guess what we went for....... (not a hotpoint 😄-maybe we were just unlucky).

Although judging by this thread we may have to rethink the brand next time.

Picoloangel · 06/02/2026 19:19

We had a Miele for years and years and when it finally gave up the ghost last year we bought a new one. I really regret it. The spin is so poor that we have to spin everything twice. The washing is often streaked with odd grey marks - I had to use washing machine cleaner when we had barely had it a fortnight and had used it a handful of times. I can’t use fabric conditioner as it doesn’t dissolve properly and leaves grease like stains on everything. The choice is between 49 minutes washes or cycles that last for hours.
