Would this garden next door put you off buying the house?

As you can see it’s completely overgrown. The front garden is a little neater, but not by much.

would this be a deal breaker for you?

house that’s for sale needs work to bring up to date, new bathroom etc but is liveable although only night storage heaters and needs new windows. It’ll obvs need a fair amount of work but the house itself is a good size.

so, if you were viewing and wanted the house how much of an impact would the neighbours garden have on your decision

No. It means the neighbours won't attempt to chat over the fence during fairer weather! 😅

Why would some overgrown bushes have rats? We got rats from our neighbours perfectly kept garden with bird cages at the end. I don't think you can tell just from this.

It wouldn't concern me, would assume an elderly person unable to tend to the garden themselves or property unused at present, you could enquire further if it really bothers you

I had one of those both sides of my garden in .y last house for the 20 years I lived there.
Both single men. It was a total pain trying to control the ivy and bindweed constantly forcing its way in.
I had a lovely garden but on more than one occasion the fence fell over due to the weight of the ivy. It made so much work for me.
I was glad to finally leave tbh.

It wouldn’t bother me unless they were anti social and the sort to have crap out the front too, as houses can be bought and sold, so moving next to a tidy one doesn’t mean it will still be tidy in 5 years.

id be bothered more the house being sold the patio needs cleaning the garden is very basic and not maininted other than a grass cut, but that’s fixable,

Gettingbysomehow · 25/01/2026 11:07

Oh yes and constant rats. Luckily my three cats dealt with those.

ilovepixie · 25/01/2026 13:18

I would be worried about rats. And also why has it been left to get like that.

Re the HMO comment, HMO's have to maintain backgardens it wouldn't get to this stage as the plants show years of neglect. It's true some HMO's have a mess, usually DIY leftovers or overgrown bushes but not for years, it could be months of mess but not years as the council would not allow itm

This is the type of backgarden of owners who are unable to cope due to money or health or both.

Itchytights007 · 31/01/2026 09:21

Wouldn’t put me off at all but I’d want to check whether the light green plant by the fence in the bottom right of the garden was Japanese Knotweed. But other than that no, a next door neighbour’s wild garden wouldn’t bother me whatsoever. As a previous poster said, better that than a lawn that’s covered in fake grass.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/01/2026 18:02

My neighbours don't have health issues,or lack of money, they just aren't interested in gardening.
