Would this garden next door put you off buying the house?

As you can see it’s completely overgrown. The front garden is a little neater, but not by much.

would this be a deal breaker for you?

house that’s for sale needs work to bring up to date, new bathroom etc but is liveable although only night storage heaters and needs new windows. It’ll obvs need a fair amount of work but the house itself is a good size.

so, if you were viewing and wanted the house how much of an impact would the neighbours garden have on your decision

Would this garden next door put you off buying the house?

There are rats EVERYWHERE, nothing special about this garden, in fact I'd prefer this to plastic grass and nowhere for wildlife to hide! They might be amenable to letting you go in and chop stuff back (especially the stuff that's growing near/over your fence) but it wouldn't put me off at all.

But then I like gardening and I love to see wild spaces.

Same- also am I the only one who thinks its not OK to post pictures of people's gardens online and invite criticism? Will it be people's houses next?

Surprised by all the “rat magnet” comments. Rats are mostly drawn by food, so arguably you should be more worried if next door had bird feeders, fruit trees or a compost bin. (And no, I don’t worry about any of these things.)

The garden next door to us looked like this for a couple of years, as it was empty (elderly neighbour, care home, complex probate etc). I’m glad to see it tidy again these days, but we didn’t have any issues, and quite enjoyed the peace.

Rats aren't only drawn by food. We had a rat problem in the garage years ago. They were using our garage for shelter but were bringing in their own food from elsewhere. When we cleared out, we found half a grass snake and a lobster shell stashed in the nest. If they find safe shelter, they will import the food.

Parsleyforme · 22/01/2026 20:27

As long as there is no rubbish under there then I wouldn’t be bothered by it. It just looks wild which is fine for me (and I would prefer to see it than concrete or astroturf). Also I am assuming neighbour doesn’t use it so it will be quiet from that side in the summer.

The front I would maybe care a bit more but not much as I don’t live there, unless rubbish piled up. I’d be more interested in the state of repair if it’s a semi as the houses might share gutters, chimneys etc.

LolNotFunny · 22/01/2026 20:34

100% that would put me off. Our old house had neighbours who let the grass grow so long in both the front and back garden and it looked like a wasteland. The back garden bothered me every time I looked out the window but the front garden (their grass met ours so even worse) just made me cringe as I had to look at it every time I came home and it made our house look unkempt by association.

If they let their back garden get like that, I’d be worried about kerb appeal.

Hellohelga · 22/01/2026 20:35

Yes would put me off. I’d foresee other issues.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/01/2026 20:36

We lived next to a garden exactly like this and had issues with rats until the site was cleared for a new build

SIL's next door neighbour has a garden like this and it causes her no end of work to keep the weeds down and to keep the growth coming over the fence tidy. She is also concerned about unwanted wildlife.

Our garden is well kept but as we back on to a railway line we do gets rats coming into our garden and there is not a lot we can do about it.

I never used to get weeds in my garden but next door don’t do anything and it is an effort to get rid of them in my place, also the vines and ivy growing over the fence. It also says the neighbours don’t take care of their property so it would put me off buying.

27pilates · 22/01/2026 20:40

Yes
Viewed a lovely house once but wouldn’t offer because of the neighbour’s garden-similar to your photo. Especially as it was an adjoining semi and the neighbour was able-bodied and not elderly.
For all the reasons lots of other people have pointed out. It’s slovenly and I didn’t want to look at that every day and worry about how it would affect my property.

RedRiverShore6 · 22/01/2026 20:44

There are rats in our gardens up our street and they are all reasonably neat and tidy, the gardens are quite big though and they tend to be in the outbuildings area at the bottom. We also get mice in the garage

CyberWithRosie · 22/01/2026 20:45

A garden like this next door would actually attract me! I'd look forward to seeing foxes, hedgehogs and lots of birds. And foxes hunt rats, so I wouldn't be unduly worried about vermin.

Lady2026 · 22/01/2026 21:19

It does make me smile tha amount of people saying rats, just go into a city, sit in a side street and wait a bit and you be amazed how many you see scurrying about people's normal gardens and streets and drives all day lol

Letty186 · 22/01/2026 21:26

Yes, it would put me off. We had a house like this on the last street we lived in, it got worse and worse over the years. The lady living in it was trying to let it fall into disrepair as it was owned by her father and there was some feud. She wouldn’t replace fences, wouldn’t accept the neighbours replacing them. Anything that went over was gone forever (footballs etc) and the neglect then began on the house ….

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 22/01/2026 21:26

Would put me off, yes. There’s so many other houses you could buy without this. I’d assume they were unwell, dirty, hoarders etc. Aggravation you don’t need.

Letty186 · 22/01/2026 21:28

At least its detached

MeganM3 · 22/01/2026 22:13

Yeah I’d be quite concerned and probably wouldn’t go for it.
I pulled out of a house purchase once because on a 2nd viewing noticed the garden next door was covered in beer cans and mess since the first viewing. I’d assumed they’d had a party the night before but seeing them there 2 months later I knew it was a v bad sign of a lazy, messy, potentially bad neighbour next door and life is too short!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/01/2026 22:15

I'd far sooner have that next door than concrete or paving running off on to mine. It's probably full of birds and bees.

greatvisuals · 22/01/2026 22:16

I'd be glad. Great for wildlife and they don't use their garden so more peace, quiet and privacy for me. win-win-win

LookingThroughGlass · 22/01/2026 22:18

No, it would mean mine wouldn't look bad by comparison 😁

augustusglupe · 22/01/2026 23:15

Yes it would definately put me off.

Worriedreparents · 22/01/2026 23:55

If you do go ahead and buy then make sure none of the overgrown plants next door are invasive, eg Japanese knotweed

Confessionsofa40yrold · 23/01/2026 06:34

I wouldn’t buy the house. I’ve spent yrs trying to keep my neighbours bind weed, ivy and rats from invading my garden and it’s miserable.

Soontobe60 · 23/01/2026 06:42

I’d be put off by a huge trampoline next to the fence, a lockdown shed with bar in the corner, plastic grass and a hot tub.

RedRiverShore6 · 23/01/2026 07:18

I would also be put off by barbecues, hot tubs, trampolines and plastic grass
