I need a decent bed, anyone got an Ikea bed?

Our bed broke this week so we're on the floor on our mattresses. Are any of the Ikea beds reccomendable? I don't like the look of the new malm series although we've got the chests of drawers - any suggestions?

The reason I ask about Ikea is that we're in germany and I don't know any of the other shops here apart from Ikea for reputation etc.

If you can it's worth buying a solid bed rather than flatpack, see it as an invesmtent do you have a local shop that sells such things?

If not do you have Habitat in Germany?

bran · 13/06/2008 16:58

I like Ikea beds, I've found them to be more comfortable than most. You do need to tighten up all the bolts occasionally, and be aware that putting the bloody thing together will put quite a strain on your marriage.

You will need to try out the mattresses and go for one of the expensive ones as the cheap ones aren't supportive enough.

We have got a black metal bed frame from ikea and it is fab.

Don't know how hard it was to put together though. I left dh to do that while I went shopping.

admylin · 13/06/2008 19:34

Thanks - I know one other couple who have the metal bed from Ikea too. Think you are right, the biggest investment should be the mattress. German double beds always (or nearly always) have 2 single mattresses so you get a crack in the middle but will just have to live with that, still wonder why because in the UK we always had big double beds with one mattress.

Bran, which Ikea beds have you had?

I've only ever had one bed frame from there which creaked like mad...but I think their matresses are great, and really good VFM.

We recently bought a sprung base and mattress from IKEA...the matress is medium/hard I think.
It's very comfortable and the back problems I had been having on our wooden slatted base/osteo mattress combo has gone! no flat pack involved..all we had to do was screw in the legs.

only downside is there is a little dip in the mattress where we lie so we need to keep turning it. Have a feeling we should've gone for the firmer one!

the sprung base is making a huge difference to comfort levels though.

and it looks slightly more streamlined and is closer to the floor than a typical british divan bed, which I need ladders to get into!

Cappuccino · 13/06/2008 19:45

we got an Ikea one and a mattress

we spent about an hour in the shop lying on the demo beds before we picked one

v comfy

admylin · 13/06/2008 19:47

No idea how some of those constructions passed the tests to be put into production! When iour last cheepo rubbish bed arrived I couldn't believe it and knew that one day it would give way - and no we weren't doing 'anything' when it broke either

The sprung base idea appeals as I am now abit traumatized about flimsy wooden frames with thin legs and holdy-up bits.

We've just got an Ikea bed and I'm loving it. Also a little longer than standard beds, if that's an issue for you. I suspect this might mean that a standard UK mattress wouldn't fit. But then you're in Germany so what do you care!

Cappuccino · 13/06/2008 19:50

ours is a metal frame with slats

and we did buy the most expensive mattress I think, or the second most expensive

but you have to try them to find out which one you like. Luckily dh and I agreed

claricebeansmum · 13/06/2008 19:50

We have an Ikea bed and mattress. What has made it just wonderful is if you get a mattress topper too - makes it dreamy. Our's doesn't squeak - if it does it time for your DH to get his tools out and get screwing

admylin · 13/06/2008 19:50

Tell me the names of all your beds please, they all have names in Ikea then I don't have to try them all when I go - can aim for all the ones named on here as being comfy!

lol cappucino we did that too. I even had them lugging mattresses around so we could try different base/mattress combos than the ones they had on display. I bet they were glad to see the back of us!

DH loves the fact that the bed is 10cm longer than standard UK matresses; his feet no longer stick out the bottom of the bed

but it did mean a few new sheets as ours didn't fit.

lackaDAISYcal · 13/06/2008 19:56

The base is Sultan Alby
Mattress is Sultan Hamno

We went for the short legs so there is only 10cm underbed space, but I like that as it can't fill with clutter and give us bad karma

Cappuccino · 13/06/2008 19:57

this is ours it was the second firmest I think

twinsetandpearls · 13/06/2008 19:57

We have an IKEA bedroom range, there is a picture of it on my thread in the property DIY topic.

We have a superking bed with matching furniture. We bought a sultan mattress and maemory foam topper and it is a dream to sleep on. The only problem is banging your leg on the corner as it is huge and because we have a mattress, another section of mattress and then a topper it can move sometimes.

expatinscotland · 13/06/2008 19:58

We have one, because it's our landlords', and we like it, but you have to buy sheets for it in IKEA.

mamamamama · 13/06/2008 19:59

Ours is Hemnes

admylin · 13/06/2008 20:00

Sounds like a definate vote for those topper things, always thought they might be good then that middle crack won't be such a bother.

Currently we have 2 singles of Sultan Allek (90cm x 200cm) with a king size (180cm x 200cm) Sultan Hamno on the top. We did this so that we had storage and (more importantly) no assembly required. We also have a matress pad on it.

We had a wooden framed Idea bed previously that we had to get rid of because with a head and footboard it was slightly too long for our room so the wardrobe door hit it whenever dh opened it, which used to drive me nuts first thing in the morning. It was similar to this but natural wood colour, I've no idea what mattress we had on it. It used to need to be tightened up every 2 or 3 years.

Before that we had a white one very like this bought when we bought our first flat 16 years ago, and it's still there in the flat which we now rent out. We've changed the matress on it several times so I don't know what it was/is.

admylin · 13/06/2008 20:16

I do like the look of that Hemnes one but it's the 'weeny thin metal X that holds the frame taught' as described by califrau that puts me off.

We move in August so I'm not buying 'til then - will report back if I get one! I'm really quite good at the screwing together part too , I have to be as dh can't even do a jigsaw puzzle (PhD, neuroscientist and on-going professor, typical eh!)
