Food Shopping - what's your monthly bill like?

Our house seems to heamorrage (sp)money and I have decided that it is my thrice weekly trips (at least) to Tescos that is the problem. I am paranoid about running out of things, and although I do a big shop, I then go loads of times for little bits (we eat loads of fruit and need bread etc)but end up buying stuff we don't need.

To combat it, I now go to Lidl as much as possible instead of Tescos, and have started keeping a spreadsheet of each time I go and what I spend. Anal I know.....but need visibility of it....it looks as though I will spend £400 this month. We are a family of 4, (2 DSs nearly 2 and nearly 4), and the boys eat loads, although 3 days a week are fed at nursery....

Thanks

Bloss

I spend £400 a month

Me dh and 5 dc (11, 8 ,7 , 2, 1 )

cupsoftea · 09/06/2008 20:44

We make do with what we have left rather than go shopping again. Can you buy bread from a bread shop & veg & fruit from a market?

ChirpyGirl · 09/06/2008 20:45

Prob around £250 (me, DH, and DD's 2.4 and 8 months) as I am the same, I am normally in the shop everyday as I always rememerb one thing, and then think I'll pick up some more stuff..it's not good.
DD's do waste a lot of food though which doesn't help.

LuckySalem · 09/06/2008 20:46

I reckon we spend around £200 on Me, DP and DD (5 months) although I am now endeavoring to make a list first.

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/06/2008 20:46

omigod Cazboldy! I must try harder....

Probably spend £130 / wk, which includes 3 bottles of wine. Am considering Aldi to try and cut costs (currently Sainsburys).

maidamess · 09/06/2008 20:47

About £100 a week, for 2 adults 3 kids and a rabbit.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 09/06/2008 20:48

I've seen this website mentioned twice in the media. I'm off to have a look myself

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 09/06/2008 20:49

I spend £60 a week on me, dh and ds (13m). I bake my own bread and we only eat meat about once a week. I plan meals and make lists which I stick to unless something we like is on special (eg. if peanut butter's not on the list but it is on sale, I'll get some.) I don't think we waste much but golly we do get through some tucker!

Nagapie · 09/06/2008 20:50

Don't really keep a tally - less than £100 a week for 1yo, 3 yo and two adults (DH has main meal in canteen) which includes toiletries, nappies, alcohol, petrol

Usually this total goes up when I don't meal plan and have to pop in every day or so for milk and bread and everything else that finds its way into my basket..

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/06/2008 20:50

Shopping at Lidl is no sacrifice, I actually prefer alot of their things to other upermarkets, and even use their nappies now as see no difference between them and Pampers Active Fit....their fruit and verg used to be below par but our local one is fine now.Things like dishwasher tablets and fab conditioner is cheaper too, and really good quality...don't know Aldi...

Not anal at all. There are lots of threads on here at the moment about the rising cost of food and fuel bills. We are all starting to get concerned.
Ours is roughly £400 pm. But is rising.

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/06/2008 20:51

my total is NO WAY includes petrol. It would be £150 a month more if it did...

muggglewump · 09/06/2008 20:55

I try and keep to £100 per month for me and DD6 and a cat.
I totaly gave up on food ethics though

TheGoddessBlossom · 09/06/2008 20:55

Have also cut down on other things - my boys no longer get magazines, which they were far too young for, never read, only wanted for the crappy toy on the front that they lost/broke within 5 minutes and collectively cost a fiver. I used to buy those bottles of water (6 packs) for them to have as drinks in the car or picnics, don't buy them anymore they have tap water in anyway up cups. Have stopped buying packaged snacks for them, and make a banana bread every week, and healthy cookies etc.

about 550 a month, including nappies for 7 week old dd. i spend too much, i know i do. My plan is to eat everything bare over the next fortnight with minimal extras (milk, bread, fruit)then start menu planing.

Thanks for that site MARGO

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 09/06/2008 21:00

It looks good doesn't it Scorpio? I've just learnt how to revive my carrots - I had been giving them CPR previously.

Nagapie · 09/06/2008 21:02

We have just recently stopped buying milk from our milkman - it was really expensive....

candyfluff · 10/06/2008 14:13
