Cleaner leaving 30-45 mins early

I’ve had a cleaner for 5 weeks. First week she did a great job, then second week asked if it’s ok to leave (10 mins early). Everything was done so I said yes. The last 2 weeks she’s left 45 mins early and then 30 mins early and the time I’m paying for is 2.5hrs. Didn’t ask just left.

What she did looked ok (not amazing) but things got left (cup marks on coffee tables, dusty skirting boards, few bits on kitchen floor, kitchen cupboards had a few food splashes. It’s like she’s rushing so she can leave as early as she likes. I ended up spending 30mins finishing after she’d done. Like the main things were done but details missing and I’m so annoyed she’s leaving so early.

After the initial 45mins early leave I gave her an extra job the next time, but all she did was then did a worse job on the other areas to leave 30mins early! I’m not going to quibble over 5-10 mins but 30-45 mins feels a lot.

what do I do? Find someone else or tackle it? I hate confrontation and it’s a lot of trust having someone in your home and relies on a positive relationship (always the worry if you upset them they’ll do something to your tooth brush). I also don’t feel great knowing they are in my home but not staying the whole time I’m paying them for which makes me question their integrity

if I do tackle, what do I say?
thanks

Find someone else.

Drivingmissrangey · 17/11/2025 07:43

You’re only 5 weeks in. They are a piss taker, end it now and find someone else.

Mathsdebator · 17/11/2025 07:44

Get rid, she's taking the piss. Mine comes when we're out and I don't have a ring doorbell so no idea how long they stay but if I wasn't happy with the clean I'd say so.

Snorydog · 17/11/2025 07:44

Find someone else

Blizzardofleaves · 17/11/2025 07:44

It is dishonest and theft basically, and very disrespectful.

I wouldn’t tackle it, she knows she is doing something wrong. Just replace her immediately, in your place I would just send a text and say it isn’t working out. If she wants to know why you can be honest if she follows up. Don’t offer her job back.

Givethegift · 17/11/2025 07:45

So you are present and she’s leaving early right in front of you?

RosesAndHellebores · 17/11/2025 07:45

Hi [insert name] my circumstances have changed and I won't be needing you again.

It isn't a loe because your circs have changed. At the start you had a gd cleaner, now you don't.

I have always felt a specification of what, how, when is helpful.

MyWiseBiscuit · 17/11/2025 07:46

Ok thanks. Wasn’t sure if I was being unreasonable or not but sounds like my gut feeling is right. She lives near me which also makes it tricky

Let her go . Easy decision. She will never be a good cleaner for you.

Correct. I’m working in my office and she’s literally left

It’s tricky for her, not you. What a CF she is!

Givethegift · 17/11/2025 07:47

Is this the first cleaner you’ve had?

agency? Recommendation?

Givethegift · 17/11/2025 07:48

How Are you paying her? If it’s not too late definitely only send 1.75 hr

Thenamechangecometh · 17/11/2025 07:51

How much are you paying? We have had this before and when life was cheaper all round and cleaning was cheaper we just let it slide. Now we don’t have a cleaner as it’s £20-25/hr where we are, we have a bigger house, but now that it would cost so much more and things are so much tighter I would be annoyed.

I pay on the day so she takes the money then leaves early

This is why I prefer to use an agency - then having these difficult conversations is someone else's job. We had a similar issue, I messaged the agency manager, and the cleaner was told to give me the full time I was paying for in future.

£15 per hour (she set the rate) but cheaper than a few others

This is all very weird

you are in the property the entire time? Anyone else? How big is your property?

And let them go? Or tell them not to leave early?

MumChp · 17/11/2025 07:52

Let her go. It won't work.

randomgeneratedusername1 · 17/11/2025 07:53

As someone who cleans houses privately . You never leave when all is done you find things to do . A lady I clean for has a huge house and if I finish early I get up and clean the tops and insides of the cupboards . Anything that may need it really she has loads of gadgets so I wash them over as they get dusty. There is always something that you can find. Also if she is leaving the basics cup stains and dust then she isn’t worth having . She is definitely taking the piss. If you don’t want to get rid then give her a small list of jobs you’d like done in any remaining time she may have as you’ve noticed she leaves early also take pics of things she’s missing. She shouldn’t accept money for time she isn’t working . If she left 1/2 hr early only pay her for 2 hrs . It’s a massive position of trust to work in someone’s home if she takes this sort of liberty I wouldn’t feel happy with her at all. Good luck op.

Let them go

and then find yourself a self assertiveness course to go on

Ok thank you. People irl tell me to give her a list or have a word but my gut says this isn’t great morals. I have a ring door bell so they must know I’ll know
