Is there anything else I can try on this vomit stain?

TL:DR- orange sick stain removal in cream carpet suggestions please!

Last month, I had a cream carpet fitted. On Sunday, DD started with a vomiting bug and covered it in sick 😭

She's fine now, but the carpet still is not. I'll share what I've tried, and wonder if anyone has any alternatives that might lift the last of the stain out? For full info, we'd had homemade Southern Fried Chicken for tea, with BBQ sauce 😷 the remaining stain is a darkish orange colour.

I obviously removed as much solid as I could. Blotted up the liquid and used plain water and a cloth to 'rinse' out the carpet. Then applied 1001 carpet stain remover with a damp microfibre.
Then I borrowed a Vax carpet cleaner and used the everyday detergent that comes with it.
Someone recommended the bubbles from Fairy liquid, so I tried that a bit too (all on Monday).

I left it overnight and went to Pets at Home and got Simple Solution stain and odour destroyer (for dog mess). I used that yesterday- both as a spot treatment, then again in the Vax carpet washer.

Is there anything else anyone can recommend? It doesn't smell (yet anyway) so I think the enzymes in the Simple Solution worked- otherwise I was going to go over with bio washing liquid- but I can still see orange splodges!

I've got a friend who swears by the Shark Stain remover carpet cleaner, if you’re able to borrow one of those. But I don’t know how much better it is than the Vax one.

Other than that, white vinegar? Bicarb?

Avie29 · 15/10/2025 14:20

Is your carpet bleach proof? if not get Vax platinum professional solution, i have light grey carpet in my living room which i can bleach thankfully as i have 5 kids but when doing big area i use the vax and it works just as well as bleach xx

ItsAVomOne · 15/10/2025 14:44

Thanks both! @ShesTheAlbatross I've used a shark before and they seem pretty comparable to be honest- maybe the shark gets the carpet a tiny bit drier but it's a different carpet so who knows! I've got some bicarb and vinegar but I thought that was just for smell- does it help staining also?

Well @Avie29 I asked my carpet fitter and he said it's polypropylene so yes apparently it is bleachable but he said 'i wouldn't recommend it'- he also thought the carpet foams would get it out and they haven't though! I was kinda keeping bleach as a last resort- do you just dilute it and rub it in?! I might test it on a tiny bit. At this stage I'm going to need a rug or something anyway- it smacks me in the face as soon as I walk in. I'll look up the Vax platinum! I just found a bottle of Vax Pre-Treatment in the accessories bag- that might help too.

For tough stains i get a damp sponge put straight bleach onto it and scrub, then scrub with just water and use vax to suck the water out, i would do a test spot behind the sofa/ somewhere you can’t see just incase first xx

ItsAVomOne · 15/10/2025 18:56

Yikes really just straight bleach? I'm worried about leaving little spots of bleach marks I suppose! It's in a bedroom and a bit difficult to do a test somewhere hidden but I think the bed frame is hiding a few of the worst splatters so I'll test a bit there if I can.

Theunamedcat · 15/10/2025 18:58

Do you have any left over carpet offcuts anywhere? You could try bleach on that

PrincessofWells · 15/10/2025 19:03

Aren't you insured?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/10/2025 19:05

Yes, I was going to ask if you have 'accidental damage' insurance. I think if you do you could claim.

Yea definitely test somewhere you wont see just incase, my carpet is a mix of greys and has white bits in it so i wouldn’t notice so much if it bleach spots i guess, i was just told by sales person i could bleach it, with 5 kids and dining table in the living room i was like yep thats the one lol gets spag bol out the carpet no problem 😂 xx

I feel your pain. My DH got some horrible food poisoning and left me with a turmeric-coloured stain on a light beige carpet. I did several rounds of scrubbing with soapy water interspersed with vaxxing, followed by a steam clean and then covered everything in bicarb to soak up any remaining liquid and odours then hoovered it up. I was not hopeful but it’s stain and smell free now. Did have to repaint the walls, but that’s a story for another day…

ItsAVomOne · 15/10/2025 19:37

@Theunamedcat there wasn't any sizeable offcuts due to the shape and size of the room- just little trimmings that he took away with him unfortunately.

Yes I am insured and it would be covered, but it's not really "bad" enough to warrant an insurance claim- I don't want to hike my premiums up and honestly, I can't face the upheaval of emptying the room out again to have another fitted! I'd rather buy a rug/live with it than go down that road.

I should have some time at the weekend to have another go at it 🙃

Oh gosh 😱 sounds miraculous that you got rid of that! The bicarb is the one thing that I haven't tried yet just because I thought it was for smell- I'll definitely give this a go before I go in with bleach..
I have also had to touch up the (just completed) paintwork and wipe down the wallpaper, drawers, bedframe etc... I cannot believe how far it went!

I tried some Dr Beckmann's stain remover today and I think it shifted a fair bit. The main area that's bugging me is a dark circular patch, about 10", that I think is where it initially hit. I'm tempted to try bleach on this last bit 👀

TalulahJP · 16/10/2025 20:45

Couod you snip a couple of threads of the carpet pile out from in a corner or behind a doorframe or in the wardrobe or something.

Then put them in some bleach (in a container or even a plastic sandwich bag) for a few minutes and see if they change colour, before you go in for the kill in the middle of your carpet?

That way you won’t damage the carpet if the threads of pile go orange or something.

Then I’d try in an isolated area of stain somewhere it won’t be as noticeable, and only if that’s successful would I finally tackle the stain.

Damn bugs. And it’s not even winter yet….

ItsAVomOne · 16/10/2025 21:54

@TalulahJP the only place I can think of is behind the door but it's definitely worth a trial to make sure it doesn't do anything weird! I'd go for under the drawers or something but it's only been recently decorated and everything isn't necessarily staying where it is.. we were just enjoying it being nice before getting properly organised 😞

Can't even think about the prospect of this happening again! I said to DD if she thinks she's going to be sick and can't make the bathroom to please do it on the duvet so I can just bin it 😬 I'll have another go tomorrow. I feel sunlight would do it good but that's hard to come by!

Dr Beckmann Upholstery Stain Remover with the brush attached to the bottle

Edited

I used the pet one with the brush attached just to break down any remaining enzymes- I can't tell if there's a bit of a smell. I need someone else to come in and sniff!

It did a good job, there's just this last bit that's annoying me. It wouldn't be weird to put a rug where it is so I might just do that and move on 🙃

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 17/10/2025 07:34

I was coming on to suggest the Simple Solution. If that doesn’t work, I don’t think anything will! It might be worth trying bleach and if it ruins it you can go with the rug to cover it.

ItsAVomOne · 17/10/2025 10:40

Ah it did do a good job @Idstillratherbepaddleboarding- everything has, in its own way, sort of chipping away at it!

I was thinking if it did make a mess of it I could cover with the rug. I got the bleach at the ready but as I was putting some cleaning bits away I found a Vax Pre-Treatment spray that I'd not yet had a go with, and that's got rid of a little more 🤪

Try this product. Elbow Grease.
I’ve found it removes red based stains like ketchup, soups, curry etc from clothes.
It’s really good . (I once got curry on wallpaper and sprayed this on and it disappeared before my eyes.)
Obviously do a patch test in an inconspicuous area first.

My other suggestion is Ariel Gel - it’s removed every stubborn stain I’ve ever had.
good luck .

Is there anything else I can try on this vomit stain?
TMMC1 · 17/10/2025 11:06

Yes. A Marseille Stain bar will remove that easily. Get one with added clay.

WinterNightStars · 17/10/2025 12:25

Vanish carpet cleaner foam is very good & seems to get everything out

LoopyLoo1991 · 17/10/2025 12:33

Contact Doctor Who.
Go back in time.
Never buy a cream coloured carpet ...
Simples ... 😁

Seriously if you've got kids or pets a cream or white carpet is not a good idea ... 🫣

ItsAVomOne · 17/10/2025 12:44

I know, I know @LoopyLoo1991 I had this whole debate before I put it in. She's a bit older now and knows how to look after things so I figured we'd be ok. Never eats or drinks (other than water) up there, no shoes and we moved the nail polish downstairs. The thought of a vomiting bug didn't even enter my head because she's never had one before!

A few more things to try thank you. It's looking a lot better than it did even this morning, just contemplating what to spray on next 🤣 maybe the elbow grease if the CoOp have some in, as the stain is red/orange, thanks @The4teddybears. I tried to take a picture for you but it didn't come out well!

I think it was one of the regulars on Loose Women who said she'd spent more on cleaning her cream carpet over 17 months than it ever cost it the first place 🤔
Was a few years back so I can't recall exact details ...
