Is there anything else I can try on this vomit stain?

TL:DR- orange sick stain removal in cream carpet suggestions please!

Last month, I had a cream carpet fitted. On Sunday, DD started with a vomiting bug and covered it in sick 😭

She's fine now, but the carpet still is not. I'll share what I've tried, and wonder if anyone has any alternatives that might lift the last of the stain out? For full info, we'd had homemade Southern Fried Chicken for tea, with BBQ sauce 😷 the remaining stain is a darkish orange colour.

I obviously removed as much solid as I could. Blotted up the liquid and used plain water and a cloth to 'rinse' out the carpet. Then applied 1001 carpet stain remover with a damp microfibre.
Then I borrowed a Vax carpet cleaner and used the everyday detergent that comes with it.
Someone recommended the bubbles from Fairy liquid, so I tried that a bit too (all on Monday).

I left it overnight and went to Pets at Home and got Simple Solution stain and odour destroyer (for dog mess). I used that yesterday- both as a spot treatment, then again in the Vax carpet washer.

Is there anything else anyone can recommend? It doesn't smell (yet anyway) so I think the enzymes in the Simple Solution worked- otherwise I was going to go over with bio washing liquid- but I can still see orange splodges!

@ItsAVomOne

If you wanted to attempt using bleach.

Cleaning polypropylene carpets with bleach
Theoretically a polypropylene carpet can be cleaned with bleach. You will often see 'bleach cleanable' on the back of the sample. The relaity is that unless you water it down to a 50% bleach / 50% water mix the backing will rot and the fibres will fall out.
Also, you need to know that only a 100% polypropylene carpet can be cleaned with bleach and even then bleach will lift the dye if you use it neat. So for a real nasty stain like ink ground-in or red wine then try this:

  • Wear rubber gloves and a mask - the fumes are caustic and then open a window.
  • Use a solution of 50% thin domestic bleach to 50% tap water and put it in a spray bottle.
  • Evenly cover the stain and leave for 60 minutes.
  • Use a brush if needed to loosen the fibres.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water.

Ha yes I can well imagine @LoopyLoo1991 fortunately I'm only at a tenner so far in cleaning products but I do have to weigh up at what point it would be cheaper to get a professional in or a new carpet 😅

Eek @Arregaithel I think you've scared me off trying bleach. I was thinking cosmetically I might stain it further but hadn't even considered potentially rotting the backing and leaving a bloody bald patch! No no, I shall carry on with what I have and do the rug if needed.

It was feeling a bit residue-y so I've gone over it a few times with plain water to rinse it and it looks better. The water it's pulled into the tank is still dirty so I'm assuming the stain is still coming out!

My dog did the same on a wool mix carpet! A stain like that will haunt you even when others don't notice it!. The only consolation is that once the "newness" wears off and you star treading down other areas of wear - inevitable with carpet- you'll just accept it as every day wear and tear. Over the years I've accepted that the only flooring I'd have is wood or a good laminate and the only carpeting - a rug or two which I can replace in the event of mishaps.

Get a quote from a professional. My mum had an incident with her white carpet. Patch clean by a professional cleaner. Totally worth it.

MagpiePi · 17/10/2025 16:01

I had years old rabbit pee stains in a cream carpet that had resisted all the commercially available cleaners but hydrogen peroxide got them out in one application.

It sounds scary but it is brilliant for removing organic based stains. You can buy it from Amazon.

Fingers crossed these very boring pictures will be approved quickly and I'm praying you can all see the difference I have made today.. two were taken this morning and one just now. It looks better/worse depending on the direction I brush the pile!

I think you're right though @Bluedenimdoglover that it will haunt me forever. DP said a few days ago he can't even see it anymore but I definitely could and probably always will be able to! It's forever burned in my mind even if most of the evidence is gone. Having said that it was wood floor before carpet but so badly fitted, it'd almost have been worse if she'd been sick on it- gaps 🤢

@DeQuin I was googling professionals today- I seem to be in a bit of a blind spot for carpet cleaning but will reassess in the morning and widen my search if necessary!

Interesting @MagpiePi does that work differently to bleach then? I will read up, just for these last few little stubborn bits.

Yes! It really does work!

ItsAVomOne · 19/10/2025 18:32

@MagpiePi the hydrogen peroxide doesn't sound quite as scary as bleach, less chance of it destroying the backing from what I've read..

I'm so disappointed it's come back 😭 it was looking so good on Friday night and now it's not even orangey splodges, it just looks dirty, the marks are more brown/black. I've had a day off it today, fed up of scrubbing sodding carpet and not sure what to actually do next.

I’ve had a lot of success with Astonish Oxy Active Carpet and Upholstery Spray and a very brisk rub with a thick microfibre cloth.

hididdlyho · 20/10/2025 10:43

My dog had horrendous diarrhoea the other week. I tried a concoction of different carpet cleaners and shampoos to no avail. As a last resort, I ended up dissolving some vanish oxi powder (clothes stuff for colours) and leaving that to sit for a while. I scrubbed up as much as I could before giving it a final go over with the carpet cleaning machine. It worked really well and was the only thing which got rid of the smell. I would test on a carpet sample first to check it doesn't alter the colour or damage the pile.

ItsAVomOne · 20/10/2025 10:51

I might just grab that Astonish one @user593 as I've none left on my cupboard anyway for any future accidents 🙃 I need to try a bigger supermarket as Morrisons didn't have much choice.

Funny you say that @hididdlyho as I've got an old school Vanish bar that I use on clothes and was toying with the idea of trying it- it does fade colour but the carpet is so light I don't think that's a concern- when I googled using it I was strongly warned off! The biggest problem seems to be rinsing it off properly- worst case scenario the carpet rots, best case it leaves a residue that makes it filthy again. Really wish I had a sample of the carpet to try these products! Hope your doggo is feeling better 🐕
