Stained Toilet!

FlatErica · 14/10/2025 18:42

This isn’t my toilet, it’s my partner‘s. What can he use to get the limescale off? Any suggestions? I don’t know how to advise him because I’ve never let a toilet get into this state.

Viakil. Push as much water round the u bend as possible, put lots of viakil gel in and leave it overnight if possible

Mangetouts · 14/10/2025 18:45

Coke (as in Cola) is supposed to do the trick. I know it's not very eco friendly but bog standard bleach might work. It really depends on how old the toilet is and if the surface is still intact, rather than worn.

Citric acid: moralfibres.co.uk/clean-your-toilet-with-citric-acid-remove-brown-stains/

I second citric acid, it cleaned limescale from right round the bend when I moved in to a new house with a toilet that needed a decent clean.

Bleach doesn't remove it, it just bleaches it.

The power plus harpic (use a few times a day, left for a few minutes and over a few days). Tell your bf it doesn’t look too bad (I live in a boy house😅)

Thanks everyone! I’ll give citric acid a go, and post the results!

Thanks! I’ll put it on the list of possible :-)

Oh, and I would buy him a silicone toilet brush for Christmas.

(I think they come instructions otherwise there will probably be a helpful video on YouTube.)

Bamboozles · 14/10/2025 19:10

HG always

Shangrilalala · 14/10/2025 19:15

I was advised that a handful of steradent tablets overnight for a few nights would do the trick. Worked brilliantly.

maudelovesharold · 14/10/2025 19:39

I haven’t tried it for heavy limescale staining, but I use Flash with bleach (has to be the one with bleach!) as a daily cleaner. A few squirts, left to work for half an hour or so, cleans pretty much anything under the water line without having to use a brush!

Shouldn't he be cleaning his own bathroom?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 14/10/2025 19:45

You need to get the water out of the bottom of the toilet and put a strong limescale remover down there for a decent amount of time. Best way I’ve found to remove the water is a mop and bucket. Keep allowing the mop to soak up the water and use the bucket to wring the water out and do it again and again until the ceramic is completely accessible.

SunnieShine · 14/10/2025 19:55

Pumice stones off Amazon. You can get ones designed for cleaning toilets.

This miracle liquid should do it

I can try that tonight!

He does! But the toilet was like that when he moved in and he’s such green dude that he doesn’t want to put anything more powerful than a loo brush and some ecover down there. Although it’s clean and doesn’t smell, it does look a bit grim. I said I’d ask mumsnet for advice. I have steradent tablets because I’ve got a denture so I can shove some down there tonight.

This one looks like the nuclear option!

The harpic shown above will do it but remove as much or all the water and leave overnight.
Be careful mixing different chemical cleaners together as they can give off dangerous fumes.
I know someone who mixed harpic and bleach and this happened and he almost blacked out!

DidIForgetPEAgain · 14/10/2025 20:21

Dishwasher tablet

Time4changeagain · 14/10/2025 20:24

Pumice stone is brilliant for removing limescale

amilliondreamsofsleep · 14/10/2025 20:28

150g of citric acid dissolved in 150ml of boiling hot water. Scoop as much water out of the toilet as possible and pour it in, leave overnight. You may need to scrub.

Yes, remove the water from the toilet first. Try squirting in some WD40 or white vinegar to soften and lift the layer of stained limescale. Then scrub with a pumice to remove the grime without scratching the surface of the bowl

mustwashmycurtains · 14/10/2025 20:50

I used HG limescale remover (Amazon) plus some pumice stones (they come on a stick) Worked well and didnt' need to drain the water out
