Stained Toilet!

This isn’t my toilet, it’s my partner‘s. What can he use to get the limescale off? Any suggestions? I don’t know how to advise him because I’ve never let a toilet get into this state.

I find the black Zero Limescale Domestos, left down the loo for a few hours, really shifts even thick and discoloured limescale.

The power plus harpic (use a few times a day, left for a few minutes and over a few days). Tell your bf it doesn’t look too bad (I live in a boy house😅)

I also suggest trying this

Vinegar works well if left for hours. Hydrochloric acid (sold as concrete cleaner) - but probably not if your loo is plumbed in. Works a treat if you are trying to spruce up an old ceramic loo bowl, sink etc which is not connected to anything.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Status update: 24 steradent tablets left overnight followed by a gentle scrub with a loofah. Next try: citric acid.

Have a similar problem, scooped most of the water out, filled it up with coke, left it overnight, didn't really help.

HG always

HG is amazing. All of the different ones. Worth the cost.

Shangrilalala · 15/10/2025 18:48

That’s a good start. I found that the steradent trick took a good 4/5 days to clear, obviously some of the stronger concoctions will get you there much more quickly.

The limescale finally came away in a plate/chunk. It was fascinating and gross in equal measure!

TheOliveFinch · 15/10/2025 20:00

That Harpic will do it and is much less hassle for a badly stained toilet just chuck down half to a full bottle leave overnight and it will be clean in the morning

Buy some Urika. Or, Harpic Black as a first try - get rid of the water below the line of scale first

TheTealBee · 15/10/2025 20:18

I moved into a house once that had a similar toilet. It wasn't actually dirty but had thick lime scale which no amount of cleaning products got rid of. The way I got it off was to put on some rubber gloves and scrape it off with a knife. May not be good for the toilet but no harm was done and the lime scale came off!

Raindancer411 · 15/10/2025 20:31

I was told it’s as new toilets don’t have the anti limescale coating now. My new toilet gets the same and it doesn’t take long!!

I was going to say I don’t rate those tablets and then I realised steradent are for teeth 🤣 quite a good job there. Get on the harping power plus and leave some there for him.

Bishopstail · 17/10/2025 06:31

Harpic black gets everything off. Makes me wonder what's in it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/10/2025 06:49

I poured a bottle of Coke in my toilet ( I wasn't going to drink it so I thought " give it a try") . Whatever limescale was there was stained an ugly brown shade and looked worse. So that's a "no" from me !

Smittenkitchen · 17/10/2025 06:51

Nancy Birtwhistle has excellent solutions for this which are environmentally friendly and also extremely effective.

BrickBiscuit · 17/10/2025 07:01

Limescale from minerals in the water coats the ceramic. The build-up then attracts more minerals from body waste and the water, hence the colour. Turn off the water supply to the cistern (to stop any overflow or drips) and flush to empty it. Remove all the water in the pan by mop or cloth. Fill to usual level with white vinegar, leave overnight. Never mix chemicals. After as long as possible, turn on water supply, flush and brush. Limescale may have broken down the ceramic to attract more; so frequent brushing and cleaning is needed. Maybe regular vinegar dosing or toilet cleaner - never mixed.
