Please help with new washing machine

I've got a new washing machine with these settings.

30 degrees is only a quick wash and is therefore not washing things properly. Having a bit of an argument with husband as he insists 40 will shrink his t shirts. Of these options what would you go for? I'm confused by all the different 40s! Thank you.

I rarely wash at 30⁰C and wash tshirts at 40⁰C. What do the care labels say?

Tooneyy · 27/07/2025 21:34

A mixture of 30 and 40 but it's more that the only 30 option is the quick wash, I'm not sure it's cleaning stuff properly. When I iron I sometimes get a whiff of sweat/doesn't when I go over the arms.

How long is each cycle and how many kg does each 40⁰C wash say is the max?
Can you adjust the temperature with any other dial/button?
What is the make/model of the machine?

FixTheBone · 27/07/2025 21:37

RTFM.

They normally have table that lists the wash time, energy use, number of spins etc at the back of the manual...

dementedpixie · 27/07/2025 21:37

You could try spraying the armpits with stain remover/spray for sweat/deodorant stains before washing. Do you use bio detergent?

Tooneyy · 27/07/2025 21:39

Honestly I don't really know what bio is! I just use whatever is on offer at Tesco. It's a Beko and 7kg. I don't have a manual, I'll try and find one online.

Can you go round the dial and see how long each wash takes, also can you lower the temperature of any of the washes, I would probably do a shortish 40 wash but not quick wash, maybe shirts or synthetic one. The washes on the right are all longer ones by the look of it

There's no timer unfortunately, I'm just trying to find the manual so see if I can find out the programme times.

Dettol laundry cleanser freshens stuff up, I think you are supposed to put it in the softener drawer but I get the big bottles from B and M and put a good bit in the main wash.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2025 21:43

Is the model number on it somewhere?

dementedpixie · 27/07/2025 21:44

Bio has enzymes to break down stains
Non bio doesnt

Tooneyy · 27/07/2025 21:45

I've just found the manual/model, it's wtl72051w. This screenshot shows shirts has a lower spin speed and only takes 80m so might be worth a go?

If you have the model number the manual will probably be online

saveforthat · 27/07/2025 21:45

I wash everything on cottons 40. I've never used 30. The shirts won't shrink.

Tooneyy · 27/07/2025 21:46

Oh damn, the shirts one is only 3kg. Back to the drawing board!

It just takes forever! My husband did complain that a few of his t shirts shrunk (I do pjs on this setting) but I accidentally had a few of mine in there recently and they were find!

I think shirts wash also, it's a reasonable length but not to harsh.

Maybe I should just try it out with smaller loads. Should have just bought a better machine but we needed something as a stopgap as hope to do the kitchen at some point.

Shorter washes are always less kg so the soap can work in less time or it won't get round all the washing

The quick is 7 though (which is probably why it doesn't do much!)

OP posts:

Do the quick wash twice. Still faster than the other washes. Pre-treat sweaty pits

solando · 27/07/2025 21:58

7kg is a lot for a quick wash, I would do the shirts one and you could probably get away with a bit more than 3kg but don't really fill it. Sometimes washes like shirt wash as less weight so there is less creasing probably.

BunnyRuddington · 30/07/2025 07:33

I usually use the Eco wash for everything apart from bedding and towels. I wash those at 60.

I’ve never heard of t-shirts shrinking at 40, unless they’re made from mohair?

Lilywisp · 30/07/2025 08:09

I have a Beko, originally I thought the QUICK WASH was exactly that (30 degrees 28 mins) but there is a panel on the left hand side of the digital display which lets me adjust spin speed and temperature so I can have a slightly longer wash but at 40, 60 or even 90. I use 40 so I’ve got a quick wash now but at a temperature which isn’t too high but gets things cleaner. Oh and if there’s an issue with sweat smells use a biological detergent as it contains enzymes which deal wit this better than non biological detergent
