Any tips on keeping whites white?

All of my kiddies white things end up with a grey /dull tinge! Any tips on what I can use to whiten (non bleach if possible) I’m useless with things like this! 😅

Hang them outside to dry in the sun.

WingBingo · 03/05/2025 10:17

Sunshine!

Screamingabdabz · 03/05/2025 10:18

Wash only whites together.
Wash at a high temperature (60 ideally) with biological powder.

That's all I do. My SIL once looked at my washing line and asked me how I kept my whites so white. I had to ask her to repeat the question because I didn’t quite believe it was a ‘thing’! I don’t do anything special imo, just wash them ‘properly’.

dementedpixie · 03/05/2025 10:18

Use powder detergent. Wash just whites together. Add a whitening powder or sachet to the wash.

SomethingAboutNothing · 03/05/2025 10:19

Napisan is good for whites.

averylongtimeago · 03/05/2025 10:20

Wash whites with whites only, spot treat stains before washing (I use K2R spray). Then if clothes are grubby, use the pre-wash program with oxyaction type powder. I find Ariel (use the one for whites) gives good results in the main wash.
For white socks, soak overnight in a bucket with oxyaction or Ariel.

itsmeits · 03/05/2025 10:20

Agree with all advice above.
All whites together, powder, Hot wash and washing line.

DissDissOrDiss · 03/05/2025 10:22

As others have said, wash whites on their own, 60 degrees, biological powder and a scoop of Vanish works for me.

ETA: and yes to line drying if possible.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/05/2025 10:23

I wash only whites together at 40 degrees, sometimes add a scoop of Vanish through the winter and dry outdoors as often as possible.

i am far from being a domestic goddess but this seems to do the trick.

Yes, this. You will be amazed at how rapidly the sun bleaches them. It is the perfect weather for it. Also, it's free!

NoNameMum · 05/05/2025 09:12

As someone else said, wash whites on their own and put some napisan in every wash.

My son seems to have about 30 pairs of disgusting white socks, I also spray them with vanish before I put them in the wash.
He brings them home from uni (he does wash them while he’s away) for mum to work her magic and get them white again! 😂

Sandylittleknees · 05/05/2025 09:15

For really yucksome things (socks) soak in tepid water with a scoop of vanish first.

Sandylittleknees · 05/05/2025 09:16

And do the grotty whites separately from sheets / towels, just in case of transfer.

Wexone · 05/05/2025 09:27

all whites go on a wash on their own. I spray pits stains etc with a mixture if white vinegar and water. add a scoop of vanish then dry..no line here so its a clothes horse or tumble dryer. I always separate my washing.. my sis doesn't and can see hers are grey

LoveSandbanks · 05/05/2025 09:32

I only wash whites with whites, at 40, dry outside whenever possible. I use washing liquid for whites/light clothes (and a different one for darks). Scoop of vanish in a prewash sometimes.

pilates · 05/05/2025 09:34

Separate dark from whites and try (not easy) to hang out on a hot day. Some advice from my midwife many years ago to get rid of stains on cloth bibs.

DappledThings · 05/05/2025 09:44

Yes to sunshine and only washing whites together but I also employ the methods of a) only having white clothing that is compulsory (school tops and cricket whites) and b) not caring too much. School tops end up with pen and pasta sauce stains anyway so a bit of grey isn't the end of the world.

Mulledjuice · 05/05/2025 09:46

Soak with laundry soda before washing, only wash whites together, I rarely wash them above 40 and don't use bio.

The exception is bloodstains

Harsher pre-wash detergents are available

josa · 05/05/2025 12:19

Religiously wash only whites together, pre treat any stains with vanish spray, add a scoop of vanish or Tesco stain removal powder to tub on top of the load. Use washing powder (I use washing liquids for my colours) not too much as this can make whites grey. Hang outside on a sunny day. The sun will bleach the white clothes. Never use bleach on any clothes it would turn whites yellow anyway.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 05/05/2025 12:25

Agree, whites only, soap powder, soda crystals, decent temperature, line dry if possible. All colours seep, so separate.

mummybear35 · 05/05/2025 13:57

Green bleach (sodium percarbonate) I buy huge tub off Amazon. It’s not like chlorine bleach so won’t take colours out and I add a scoop to each wash. If whites are particularly grim like tea towels etc, I put a scoop in warm water to activate bleach then soak items overnight and throw into machine in the morning. Also great for cleaning white porcelain sinks!

GirlfriendInAKorma · 05/05/2025 23:15

Do NOT fall for those bloody “ooh I was going to throw all my kids socks away until I bought this amazing product” posts of facebook.

It’s a total scam.

Don’t mix other colours with your whites. Try some distilled vinegar in the water. If you use powdered detergents, try baking soda with it.

Bobbie12345 · 06/05/2025 06:37

All of the above plus for the most important whites ( white shirts etc) don’t put them in with grubby whites ( eg white socks with dirt on the soles).

Arancia · 06/05/2025 07:35

The only thing that works is to wash whites with whites - not with light colours.
