feel like my washing never dries

I’m sick of squeezing past the clothes horse and washing on my banister.
I can’t tell if it’s just cold or still damp a week later.
I have a 7l dehumidifier, which pulls out a lot of the moisture, but it doesn’t seem to do enough Sad
It’s not quite sunny enough to put it out on the line yet and without the heating on anymore I don’t know what to do. Any advice please!!

I have a heated airer...and where are you in the country? I'm in London and have been hanging my washing outside for weeks now...as long as it's not raining, it's fine...if it's not bone dry from being outside, I bring it in and put it on the heated airer to finish off.

Thronglet · 27/04/2025 16:18

Extra spins before you take it out?

There's usually a few items in the load that are particularly damp. They're a bad influence on other clothes drying. So I go through my laundry and pick out what is still drenched and spin the life out of it a few times.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 27/04/2025 16:19

Get a heated airer instead?

It doesn't need to be sumny to hang washing out, just dry.

I tumble dry most stuff these days due to one of the family having allergies but I appreciate not everyone has the space.

Morningup · 27/04/2025 16:22

South east

I have been drying outside for weeks

if not, tumble dryer or a kick ass meaco 1l dehumidifier

RetailIsMyTherapy · 27/04/2025 16:43

I didn’t realise it was washing line weather already! I’ll try that but I’m now looking into a heated airer, does anyone know of a good compact one? I live in a small house so can’t have one of the big box ones.

Where do you live? Washing can go outside year round in most places with a bit of wind. If the pavement is dry, the washing will dry.

Hercisback1 · 27/04/2025 16:45

Also clothes not drying in a week indoors is concerning. Are you airing the place? Dehumidifiers work best in an enclosed space, but you should still be airing the house.

JMSA · 27/04/2025 16:53

Is your dehumidifier a cheapy one? I have the 20L Meaco and it’s fab.
The Lakeland heated airer would serve you well; I believe they do a smaller version. Top tip is to cover it with either the specially fitted cover you can buy with it, or just put a big sheet over it. The stuff dries quicker when the hot air is trapped.
I don’t have a tumble dryer and live in a Georgian flat, which historically had damp problems. The Meaco and Lakeland are my dream team 👌

Topseyt123 · 27/04/2025 16:54

Where do you live? We are in Essex and it has been fine for drying washing outside for several weeks now.

It doesn't have to be a sunny day. Overcast and breezy works just as well. If there is still any dampness in it when I bring it in then it doesn't take long on the airer to be fully dry, or I just give it a quick go in the dryer and that sorts it.

I appreciate you don't have space for a dryer. Maybe a heated airer would work, though I tried on (Lakeland Drysoon) and wasn't impressed so I got rid of it.

Whereabouts are you?

5.15pm here and garden still bathed in warm sun

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 27/04/2025 17:25

As others have said, really! We have a 20L Meaco dehumidifier. Washing is now in a separate room to the dehumidifier and my load that I washed yesterday lunchtime is dry (we have a good size semi, large rooms, 4 beds just for reference). Also washed two loads today and hung them outside and they are already dry and put away (North West).

Where do you live that it's not been warm enough to dry washing outside? There have been plenty of great drying days over the last month....do you ever go outside?

Moveoverdarlin · 27/04/2025 17:33

Where in the UK are you? It’s been lovely weather for weeks! First week of April was boiling. I hung towels out today at 10am, by 11.30am, they were bone dry after hanging on the line. Done three loads today. All dried and put away.

It’s gone 5.30pm and 17 degrees in the midlands stick it out now and it’ll be dry in half hour. Aside from days when it’s raining it will dry outside fine from now until late October. I wouldn’t waste money on a heater at this time of year.

pizzaHeart · 27/04/2025 17:38

I put washing outside all year around and take it inside if it’s raining. Sometimes it’s just for an hour but it helps anyway especially IIf it’s windy.
Flat sheet was dry in a few hours today.

pizzaHeart · 27/04/2025 17:40

I’m really curious what do you count as “washing line weather”?

There isnt time of year for hanging out washing, you can do it any day it's dry

Whereabouts are you?

AcquadiP · 27/04/2025 17:47

Tbh I don't think a 7 litre dehumidifier is powerful enough, a 20 litre would have everything dry in a few hours. Mine's an Ansio Aeropura, 22 litre, a beast of a machine, it does an excellent job in no time. Also, do you remember spin dryers? They're back in fashion! I have one, it takes 4.5 kg, 2800 spins per minute, made by the German company, Thomas, I wouldn't be without it. 3 or 4 minutes in the spin dryer, then hung outside or in front of the dehumidifier for a few hours, job done.

RetailIsMyTherapy · 27/04/2025 17:54

I’m in Greater London too! Blush I did put my washing out a couple of weeks ago and it was still damp after 4 hours, and just haven’t thought to since! Thanks for my embarrassing help! GrinFlowers

This is odd op

so am I in GL

it was BEAUTIFUL today. As in shorts and t shirt

WarmPeer · 27/04/2025 18:09

Put your washing out on the line and then if you need to finish it off with the dehumidifier.

Hercisback1 · 27/04/2025 18:55

4 hours isn't that long outside if its not windy and sunny (like today). You need to commit for the long run!!

MissEloiseBridgerton · 27/04/2025 19:45

Even indoors my washing only takes a day to dry, maybe 2 if the heating hasn't been on! I keep the window open a crack, and occasionally run a small dehumidifier in winter. Are you overloading your clothes horse? I leave plenty space between each piece of clothing, and rotate once

sickofbeingsick1 · 27/04/2025 19:49

I’m fed up of drying clothes too. Got a dehumidifier on but I don’t like adding the heated airer to it when it’s hot
Or I’ll open the window and try and position airer in the sun

If it's in the sun can you not put it on the garden
