Washing nightmare

Ok I’m just going to be honest, I’ve had my first baby late in life, I’m completely used to just chucking my clothes in the wash with a bit of Vanish & done. Have done for 25 years. WTF is up with baby food on clothes?!?!?! Im actually sitting here crying about it - ok I’m absolutely shattered because she’s going through some sleep regression thing but omg I’ve washed this load 6 times - 6! I pasted & scrubbed vanish on the staines & put it in all the washes & used biological powder (never even realised what this meant till last month!) & they’re still a mess. I feel like some Victorian washer woman! And not a good one! Without any sarcasm or judgy comments…please, what am I not doing?!!!

get the cloth bibs with sleeves?

TitusMoan · 26/03/2025 11:48

Also, hot washes will set stains.

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 26/03/2025 11:48

Never put a child in white (or preferably any age person, never comes out!), or a pale colour. Always put them a bib on.

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 26/03/2025 11:49

And use biological washing powder! Non bio does sweet fa!

rubyslippers · 26/03/2025 11:49

It honestly doesn’t matter
just buy big bigs with sleeves and which come down to their waist
pre soaking may help but I wouldn’t be washing anything 6 times

viques · 26/03/2025 11:50

If the clothes are clean, ie not covered in piss, poo or puke and the only issue is that they are stained then it is not going to make any difference to your baby if they wear them. Your baby will grow out of them quite quickly and will then happily move on to staining their new clothes.

SisSuffragette · 26/03/2025 11:50

Just don't worry about stains on clothes. If they stain use them for messy play/ messy dinners

YellowHatt · 26/03/2025 11:52

Washing:

  1. Don’t hot wash a stain (it will set it)
  2. Get a mini soaking bucket to put stained things in asap and leave overnight
  3. Sunshine gets most stains out… eventually

Prevention:
Rubber bibs with long sleeves!!! Bibado ones are great.

Alwaystired2023 · 26/03/2025 11:54

soak in lots of salt, wash in bio and then rewash in non bio or extra rinse (maybe not necessary if baby skin not sensitive)

banivani · 26/03/2025 12:04

Maybe they just need to be washed hotter? I was brought up washing clothes at 40 degrees, and when I had children discovered how much cleaner things got at 60 and was amazed.

sociallydistained · 26/03/2025 12:08

Bibados. I live and die by them! But otherwise cold rinse first. Also the sun! The sun is a miracle bleacher. Get them out in direct sunlight! I used cloth nappies and on the few times we did have a stain, the sun sorted it!

sociallydistained · 26/03/2025 12:09

Also Bio 💯

jackiesgirl · 26/03/2025 12:09

Try a bit of washing up liquid on the stains. I had an exploding foundation accident on a white top a few months ago and thought there was no chance of getting it out but even after a wash the washing up liquid just disssolved it in seconds

1AngelicFruitCake · 26/03/2025 12:12

All great tips.
I love washing and putting on the washing line. It’s the putting away I hate! My children are going through an oversized jumper phase but are at primary so still get covered in mud, food etc. I feel like all I do is deal with stains!

FiveBarGate · 26/03/2025 12:34

Peg it out in the sun.

Tomato/orange stains come out better in sunlight than anything else.

I can only think it's why Italians can do white clothing and Bolognese

Hoppinggreen · 26/03/2025 12:36

Oh bless you
Just lower your standards a bit
Clean clothes with stains on are fine for staying in the house or Nursery

Ineedpeaceandquiet · 26/03/2025 12:39

6 times - impressed with your tenacity 😉

PoachedDregs · 26/03/2025 12:43

Lower your standards

Put everything straight into a cold water soak when stained (as above, hot water sets stains)

As above - put out into the sun, lifts a lot of stains!

Allsorted1 · 26/03/2025 12:46

I have. I double up with that & a rubber lipped thing. It goes underneath!

burnttoasthehe · 26/03/2025 12:47

wet The Stain with the cold water then dollop some fairy liquid where the stains are and give a good rub with your hands, rinse again with cold water then add some washing liquid on it then throw it in the wash at 30c this is what I do with every stain adult caused or baby 9/10 it will remove the stain.

AlphabetBird · 26/03/2025 12:47

Agree with everyone saying sunshine. Anything organic will break down in sunlight, so just wash it as you normally would and get it outside. Some things might need a day or two, but it really is marvellous.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/03/2025 12:51

Use fairy liquid to dab stains asa pre wash.

Alternatively feed dc naked (them not you!) whenever possible. Then wash the DC.

Muststopeating · 26/03/2025 12:58

Ditch vanish! I used it for years and still had stained clothes.

I used Ace directly on the stain, then if I'm doing a light or white load I chuck a capful of Ace and a scoop of napisan in the drum.

Has been an absolute game changer for life with 3 kids and very few stains (if I notice them) defeat me now.

I also have a fairly new washing machine and use the pre-wash setting and the Bubble soak setting if I know that the stains are particularly bad.

But like someone said, stained clothes are not dirty clothes so do try and adjust your mindset. Never seeing the bottom of your laundry basket brings enough stress without adding any extra pressure.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/03/2025 12:59

You need these bibs. Feed baby in their vest. If that does get stained soak it in ace laundry beach. They do one for colours too. Don’t tumble dry otherwise it will set the stain, stick it on the line, the sun will bleach out anything that’s left.
