Washing nightmare

Ok I’m just going to be honest, I’ve had my first baby late in life, I’m completely used to just chucking my clothes in the wash with a bit of Vanish & done. Have done for 25 years. WTF is up with baby food on clothes?!?!?! Im actually sitting here crying about it - ok I’m absolutely shattered because she’s going through some sleep regression thing but omg I’ve washed this load 6 times - 6! I pasted & scrubbed vanish on the staines & put it in all the washes & used biological powder (never even realised what this meant till last month!) & they’re still a mess. I feel like some Victorian washer woman! And not a good one! Without any sarcasm or judgy comments…please, what am I not doing?!!!

You guys are amazing - thank you! I’ve learnt so much! So many of you mentioned the Sun & salt - how the hell do you know this stuff? They should teach this stuff in school. I love the advice to ‘lower my standards’ - she IS very loved & cared for - are you sure people won’t think she’s a neglected child?!?! Is this some kind of unspoken mum rule?!

It’s all she has. If I threw it all away, I’ve only got short sleeved stuff rn

Hot wash for food stains, stain remover and drying out in sunlight works wonders for tomato/curry type stains. A soak in napisan is a good one too.
At the end of the day though you have to accept that it’s not that important. Babies make a mess, you can use long sleeved bibs but there will still be some stains. Buy cheap or second hand clothes for everyday and then it doesn’t really matter.

sugarplum33 · 26/03/2025 13:23

If the food is going down the neck of the coverall bib get some dribble bibs- or bigger fabric bibs- to wear underneath.

How old is baby? As they get bigger they start to get better aim and control and more food goes in their mouth than down their front.

BeSharpBee · 26/03/2025 13:30

I was lazy, I fed mine in just their nappies and wiped them over afterwards 😂 or saved the messy meal for dinner and chucked them straight in the tub and into pjs afterwards.

Cold water, washing up liquid and a soak usually get most stains out. Or if you get a collection of stained vests/onesies washing machine dye is an easy fix or tye-die if you're feeling creative!

Yip when I had my kids I discovered lots of previous innocuous food stuffs stain like stink. Banana who even knew that stained, but it appears impervious to all my tricks. DD trashed a cotton white company duvet set by sneaking upstairs with a banana.
Line drying is like a miracle for tomato stain removal they just vanish.

This is the only way forward - nappy only at meal times - so simple but definitely the only way. Cheers. Fair play

8 months and yes I double bib. It still seeps on to the neck area

@Allsorted1also try the new fairy spray - spray and into the washer. Wash all clothes on a cold or very cool wash. Bad stains can be targeted with fairy liquid rubbed into them.

Is it definitely a bibado one? I have a ‘dupe’ and the real thing - the dupe always leaks around the neck and the bibado never does.

I have a stack of stained fabric bibs and whenever I have to use the dupe I chuck one of those on under it all bunched up like a cravat to mitigate the annoying neck leak issue. Could try that?

Napisan is brilliant for removing stains, heavy stains should be soaked in salted cold water first to loosen, then wash with usual detergent and add Napisan powder. If stain is still present don’t allow to dry. Sun also helps with stains. Good luck OP.

groovylady · 04/04/2025 19:57

Cold soak
Bio powder
Outside in sun (UV)

I use a bit of fairy liquid to lift most stains before putting them in the wash, especially anything greasy. Other than that, vanish spray directly onto stain. Leave overnight with the spray on it then wash. I feel you though OP, I am pregnant with a 2 year old and honestly, I am sick to death of getting stains out of clothes lol. Bibado bibs are an absolute lifesaver by the way.

HairOfFineStraw · 04/04/2025 21:18

Dishsoap rubbed into the greasy, foody spot and then chucked in the wash can usually get it.

Don't be fussed about stains though. Wait til she starts nursery and it will be paint- and not cheery red. Oh no, they mix mix mix until it's shit brown and they paint each other.

I send mine looking like he fell in a bin now 🤭

Julieju1 · 04/04/2025 21:50

Soak in a bucket of water with washing powder and bicarbonate of soda. Then wash as normal.

hellololabells2019 · 04/04/2025 22:07

Put it in the sun!
