Which vacuum should I buy?

My 7 year old cordless Dyson is dead. The suction has been a bit rubbish for a few years and it can't hold a charge now, but I did love how easy it was.

My requirements are:

  • small three bed house, mostly carpets, some light coloured - need something that's great on carpets
  • I have long hair and it sheds a lot, also have a small dog who sheds much less - something that can handle the hair!
  • I don't have loads of storage space, so something small/easy to store
  • I like to use the hoover on my sofa/mattress etc. So something with a few attachments

I'm seeing a lot of love for Miele - is that where I should go? Happy to spend up to £400-500 if it's something that will work well and last.

What would you recommend? How hard is it to go from cordless to corded??

Shark Statos Pet Pro upright, 5 stars. I have the corded one, dont know if they even do a battery one. I would never buy a cordless vac, it's just unnessecary

Cally62 · 14/02/2025 14:45

Watching in the hope that someone can suggest a vacuum that sucks and doesn’t suck.
Had a Dyson animal a few years ago then bought a Shark which lasted just over 2 years.
Bought a Miele for almost £500 and it’s really good on hard floors but doesn’t pick up on carpets even with the turbo head.
Next time I think I’m just going to buy a cheap one from Amazon and replace every year as I really don’t think it’s a matter of you get what you pay for.

Tumbler2121 · 14/02/2025 15:00

Get a robot one ... they are amazing. Keeps the place tidy because they don't work so well if they have to work around clutter!

If used to cordless, I totally love my Gtech, you'll hate corded.

Clarice99 · 14/02/2025 15:05

I love my Miele Triflex (around 5 years old).

I also have a Miele cylinder, corded/bagged which I've had for over 15 years and it's still going strong.

Mercurial123 · 14/02/2025 15:08

Miele pet is really good. I also have a Roomba, but I still need my plug-in one. The robot hoovers aren't powerful enough for a decent clean, especially if you have shedding cats/dogs.

Margorett · 14/02/2025 15:10

Miele cat and dog, brilliant ! Pricier than others, but you get what you pay for.

Devilsmommy · 14/02/2025 15:10

I just got a Hoover cordless pet one. It's got the detangle thingy on it for hair. Can be used normal or handheld and has a couple of attachments. Only had it for 2 weeks but I'm loving it so far

janney3 · 14/02/2025 15:13

I have a corded Shark which is super efficient and their customer service is 5 star, any problems I have had with the product they have been quick to send new parts and the warranty is 5 years if bought direct. I always recommend.

Bologneselove · 14/02/2025 15:19

Miele cat and dog is great. Mine is over 10 years old. I’d get another in a heartbeat when current one breaks.

IKnowAPlace · 14/02/2025 18:55

Which Miele cat and dog to people have? The C2 is "reduced to clear" so curious if the C3 is a worthwhile upgrade.

I've got a 20+ year old Miele Cat and Dog, but I wouldn't go back to corded and get one now unless you have a huge house.

Recently bought this (after a fair amount of research) and it's excellent:

Not sure why link won’t work, but its this:

Samsung Jetâ„¢ 75E Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner.

£279 at Samsung.com or John Lewis. Weirdly way more expensive elsewhere.

I have been online to the Miele site and compared the two cleaners thoroughly, that is, assuming you are talking about the Complete C2 Cat & Dog Autumn red and the Complete C3 Cat & Dog Tayberry red.

The only differences are the cord length (6.5m on the C2 and 8.5 on the C3) the noise level (C2 is 3 decibels louder), and weight (the C3 is 0.3kg heavier).

That is it.

There is no mention of the a crevice tool on the C2, but it is clearly there in the pictures. The motor wattage is the same for both, but without knowing if it's the same motor in both and what the air-watts are, this can't be used as a comparison.

From what I can tell, the C2 is simply an older design. I prefer the look of the C3, but it's £90 more and I do not think there's £90 of added value.

HTH.

Check out Bosch Vacuums, the UNLIMITED range is reasonably priced and has really good battery life! I've tried their latest unlimited 10 in a John Lewis store the other day was very good in picking up dirt! Think they said it was around £550 if I remember correctly but I would recommend if you're happy to splash :)

I bought the aqua one, as I have hard floor downstairs and carpet upstairs so i get lots of use out of it !

Badbadbunny · 21/02/2025 11:02

Definitely the Miele Cat and Dog. I've got one, had it a long time, and it's absolutely brilliant. Well worth the money. I've had a Henry and a Dyson and both were absolute crap compared with the Miele.

ThePoshUns · 21/02/2025 11:07

I have the Miele cordless stick one, I love it.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 21/02/2025 11:11

Sebo Felix or X7, depending on your preference. I’ve had a Felix for years, by far the best vacuum I’ve ever owned.

senua · 21/02/2025 11:18

Have you looked at the MN review? although I find it a bit annoying that they only have one winner in each category - in things like this there is often little difference between the top three.
This is GH's review

ThePoshUns · 21/02/2025 11:07

I have the Miele cordless stick one, I love it.

So do I.

I used to have a Miele corded, which was excellent, and ages ago a Sebo, also excellent, but I use the cordless more frequently as it's so easy.

No-one with long hair here though, including the dog, so can't vouch for effectiveness with that.

Daftapath · 21/02/2025 12:08

I have a c3 (I think! It's red anyway). It's excellent. Deals with dog hair and long human hair and picks up all the debris left from toys that the dog has chewed.
It's compact and light enough, I would say. Just make sure that the model you choose has the turbo brush attachment included.

The only niggle, if I had to find one, is that it's fiddly to remove any hair coiled around the brush on the turbo head. The brush can't be removed (unlike the one on my Bosch cordless) to do the job but then I'm not having to do it very often.

I've used a Bosch cordless on holiday and thought it was really good, much better than my shark at home. It wasn't an expensive one either, I checked it out on Argos and it was about £180.

Daftapath · 21/02/2025 13:55

I've also have a cordless Bosch athlet for a few years. It does work well, it's light and compact for storage

But ... it needs emptying all the time as the compartment is small and the brush bar gets quickly wrapped in hair and then doesn't work until it has been untangled.

The handheld function is very difficult to use as I find the handle impossible to remove so never bother.

I would definitely choose the Miele over this Bosch if you have a normal sized house as opposed to a small space to vacuum

AmusedGoose · 21/02/2025 14:39

Professional cleaner here. Animal hair needs an upright vacuum cleaner. Had a Shark for 8 years but you do have to kook after them and wash the filters monthly. Tbh you can't beat Dyson uprights if you don't like Shark.

IKnowAPlace · 21/02/2025 16:56

Thanks for all the responses!

Animal hair isn't a problem - she's tiny and her hairs are eyelash length. It's mine that's really long - at least 2ft full length. Untangling from a vacuum is a nightmare I'd love to reduce!

I asked a similar question recently and someone recommended a cordless Henry. I had no idea they did a stick version. I compared it to the Miele one, and its lighter and has a larger bag capacity. I'm still debating what to buy though.

As a side note, Miele offer 20% full priced items it you contact customers services and have a blue light card. They also have a discount store and the stock changes daily. We recently bought appliances and their A and B grade products were as new.
