Are expensive washing machines really worth it?

Does anyone know if a £1000 washing machine is any better than a £300 one?

Looking at Miele ones and wondering how much better a washing machine can actually be?

Aside from energy and water uses - would like to hear any other benefits!

I had a Miele one and was very happy with it.

However I've now got one of those Samsung ones where you can open it mid cycle to add socks etc. I'm equally pleased with this!

I've come to the conclusion that they very much are worth it.

£1000 for a miele that will last you 10 years minimum.

£250 for a beko will last you 2.5 years so also £1000 for 10 years as you'd probably need 4.

Now factor into that the cost of delivery, installation, and removal of the old appliance - £100 per time x 4 = another £400. Not only that, but the hassle of having to purchase another one and make sure your home when they deliver.

So my conclusion, after 40 years of running a house is to either go for the cheapest one if you really can't stretch to a miele, or just go straight for the miele.

the worst ones in my opinion are the medium range ones which are neither cheap, nor last very long.

Mumsntfan1 · 03/02/2025 16:19

Depends on use. If you've got five kids and do 2 loads a day then a cheap one won't last long. If you're on your own a cheap one will last for ages.

Yes, my Miele survived 3 house moves and 16 years

Parky04 · 03/02/2025 16:55

My Indesit cost £200 and has lasted 7 years so far. It's all down to luck, IMO.

Maneattraction · 03/02/2025 17:15

My Miele lasted 15 years, it was v expensive and I had to convince myself it was the way forward. Had a 10 year warranty which was used a couple of times.

We have replaced it with a Samsung, slightly cheaper, good warranty. I am happy with it.

Cheaper models only lasted 2-3 years and the warranties were useless.

Germanymunch · 03/02/2025 17:19

Has anyone found this post Brexit though? We don't have the same protections now - does no one else remember there was a bit of a rush on buying white goods from the old protected stock?

vandel · 03/02/2025 17:24

Indesit basic with dials - no bells, whistles, apps or anything like that. Still going strong 6 years down the road.

I'm beginning to think that all the electronics and hundreds (!) of program choices these days are rubbish. All we need is a machine with a short wash, hot wash, 40d, 30d, decent spin, and ability to add a further spin. I have all that.

If it breaks down I'm going to go for a similar product with just knobs, no bells and whistles and minimum number of programs - if there are any produced by then. I only use the same four programs anyway. There are 16 options though!

Bananalanacake · 03/02/2025 17:26

I have a Miele Twin Dos, where it has 2 boxes of the washing liquids so you don't need to put it in for each wash. Next I need to learn how to use the app rather than asking DH what it means when it asks things in German.

Mieles used to be excellent and last years but my Miele repair guy told me not to bother with the new ones as the quality has deteriorated. He told me to buy a haier when my Miele kicked the bucket at 20 years of age, and I’ve had the haier a few years and it’s trucking along just fine.

Never heard of em.

Allthebrokenplaces · 03/02/2025 19:29

I'm astonished that people only expect a washing machine to last 2.5 years, is that really the norm?
Mine's a bit temperamental, aged 3, and I assumed I'd been sold a dud. Still carrying on with it though.
Previous cheapy indesit lasted 13 years before giving up.

I was lucky enough to be given a used (don't know how old) Miele, I had it for about 12 years I think before it died? And thst was using it at least daily, plus heavy and hairy dog bedding and coats and floor mats and muddy towels. It took everything I threw at it, only ever needed the pump/filter cleaning out and then ut was fine again. I really miss it but couldn't justify the expense of buying new so have a bog standard before type atm. Which we use heavily for work and probably need replacing every 2 or 3 years at a guess?

Thank you for the replies. Very useful!

The door catch mechanism on Mièle machines is their Achilles Heel. Repeatedly.

Never again.

fitgirl26 · 03/02/2025 19:42

I've had my basic Hotpoint for 22 years 🤣 It"s a bit noisy on spin but does the job!

addictedtotheflats · 03/02/2025 19:43

Gosh my £280 hoover washer dryer is 10 this year, couple of repairs through my appliance insurance but still going strong.

angieloumc · 03/02/2025 19:46

I have a Miele washer, seven years old and working just the same as the day I bought it. Before that I had a Bosch, that lasted about eight years.

SaturdayKitchenSally · 03/02/2025 19:46

My first Neff washing machine lasted 20 years. I replaced it with a Neff. My dishwasher is 21 years old - touches wood. My repair guy told me to look after it when he was installing the washing machine because only the really expensive models are made with a one piece stainless inner these days.

I've always been really happy with Neff.

User0311 · 03/02/2025 19:47

Yes worth it imo. Buy cheap buy twice. I really do think they last longer in the long run so worth it overall! Talking from experience

Ponderingwindow · 03/02/2025 19:49

I have a household of ND individuals. We recently bought one that sends alerts to our phones and through Alexa to tell us to take the wash out of the machine. It’s an absolute game changer for us and worth the cost because we no longer have to rewash forgotten laundry.

Snorandsnot · 03/02/2025 19:59

I definitely go for cheap and cheerful, have had three washing machines over 20 years and always bought the most basic machines. This was after forking out for a whirlpool machine about 23 years ago and it was rubbish and ridiculously expensive…about £700 .
I take the view that the more extras, generally have more components to go wrong !
The same with any electronic devices, I avoid anything that is digital or too complicated to use ,more likely to go wrong!

Doggymummar · 03/02/2025 20:02

I paid 1000 for all the white goods in my kitchen altogether. Matching Beko, now six years old and all still in great working order. In our last rental they were all Bosch and in two years the dishwasher American fridge freezer and oven all needed repairing.

JC03745 · 03/02/2025 20:11

I agree it depends on your family and how often you are washing. Its just DH and myself, so only 1-2 washes a week at most. We had a bosch which was great, no issues, cleaned well.

We've since moved and bought Miele. If you have a blue light card, and ring their help desk, you get 20% off full priced products. They also have an outlet site. Stock changes daily. We bought some A and B grade products and they looked brand new! How long they last, we shall see. Previously, I think 10yr warranties!

We have a Samsung. It's a massive machine which works hard with a family of five. It copes with washing a king size duvet. We had some inside bit replaced which was about half the cost of replacing it and should give us and other 5 or 10 years.
In the time we have had it our.dosh washer has been brought repaired broken beyond repair. 3 times. The Samsung was expensive. The dishwasher brought by landlords have been cheap.
