Blocked drains - They won’t come out till Monday

Anyone got any idea how I can get dyno rod out sooner? Our toilets are really backing up and they can only send an engineer out Monday! 5 days away! Weather is also looking bad so concerned they won’t come!

They aren't the only drain company out there. Ask on local FB groups for suggestions of smaller local drain companies, who will probably fit you in much sooner!

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 01/01/2025 12:40

Wouldn’t your water company come out? I’ve had them come out twice for the same issue. The engineers said it was their responsibility so it didn’t cost me anything and they came out within the day

CoastalCalm · 01/01/2025 12:41

Check your manhole outside as it could be that that’s blocked , if it is easy to clear yourself using a set of drain rods - recommend some wet wipes up the nostrils while tackling but so satisfying when it clears

Bimblesalong · 01/01/2025 12:42

as the poster above, try your water company. They’ve sorted ours a few times (staring at neighbour whose poorly sited tree’s roots keep growing into the pipe…)

WonderingWanda · 01/01/2025 12:42

Contact your buildings insurance and ask them for advice. They might have a contractor that can come out.

Do this, always been able to clear this myself and if you don’t have any rods, post on local social media and someone will lend them to you

Is it the toilet or is it the drains outside? If toilet then lots of ways to help.

PashaMinaMio · 01/01/2025 12:46

Can you lift a cover in your garden or drive & see what’s going on? Could you try to free it up there with a broom? Go to Screwfix.com & buy drain rods?

Try using a mop to plunge the toilet, or rubber gloves & a big cloth.

As other posters have said try water company. Ours was blocked at manhole outside, sewage spilling out, smelled revolting. Man was out rapid fire, big rods down cleared in half an hour, no charge. Said it was blocked with tree roots.

cansu · 01/01/2025 12:50

Best way to unlock toilet is
Washing up liquid down loo - plenty. Pour bucket of hot tap water down loo and wait. It will usually clear itself.

cansu · 01/01/2025 12:50

If it is drains try water company. It could be their drain.

Thelondonone · 01/01/2025 12:52

You need to work out if it’s the drain on your property or the main drain outside.

DogInATent · 01/01/2025 12:52

Can you borrow a set of drain rods from a neighbour? (if not, they're not expensive from Screwfix or Plumbase).

It's not rocket science, most of the time it will be wet wipes, or kitchen towel, undissolved washing powder, or fat. A good go at it with a set of rods and it will clear. First step is as PP have mentioned, lifting the manholes to see where it's blocked.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 01/01/2025 12:54

Often household insurance has response repairs included. I'd avoid Dynorod like the plague, often the most expensive / worst. Local plumbers / recommended trades far better.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 01/01/2025 13:00

To echo what others say, if you are on mains drainage and share a sewer with next door then the water company will come and sort it.

Our downstairs loo seemed like it was blocked but it was actually the drains outside.

lifeisunpredictable · 01/01/2025 13:05

Engineer been out and it’s a shared drain between me and the neighbours (neighbours saying their drains ok just now but they are a bit higher up). He said it needs a sooky out vector and wasn’t any point as main drain blocked. Likely the main one is blocked in street

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 01/01/2025 15:17

If the street one is blocked presumably you could contact your water company?

BlackeyedSusan · 01/01/2025 15:22

In the mean time. ..

Try a bucket, carrier bag and cat litter.

Or a travel potty with bags they use for toddlers.

Just wee can be tipped on the compost heap. You'll have bloody good compost. (Bob Flowerdew's recycled beer)

Washing up water, hand washing water and bath water can be chucked on the garden and not harm plants as long as it is not still hot!

DogInATent · 01/01/2025 17:13

If it's a shared foul drain and your neighbours aren't affected, it's not the drain in the street that has the problem.

WhatMe123 · 01/01/2025 17:23

You can unblock them yourself buy some rods from screw fix watch a you tube video and you can easily sort it. Not the best answer but saves waiting

NewGreenDuck · 01/01/2025 17:34

I would still rod the drains on my premises. It might be enough to sort out the problem, especially if your neighbour isn't affected.

lifeisunpredictable · 01/01/2025 17:47

The drain is a main drain and about 2.5 meters deep! The engineer that came out said he couldn’t fix it and needed a vactor.

stichguru · 01/01/2025 17:49

When they next have a slot. Try a different company if they don't have an appointment soon enough for your liking.

cansu · 01/01/2025 17:52

If it is a shared drain the water company are responsible. Call them.

Redrosesposies · 01/01/2025 17:53

If it's a shared drain/sewer pipe, no matter where it's blocked, it is your Utility Company's responsibility. United Utilities have come out to ours a few times and always have the appropriate equipment.
Call them before you pay Dyno rod.
