Blocked drains - They won’t come out till Monday

Anyone got any idea how I can get dyno rod out sooner? Our toilets are really backing up and they can only send an engineer out Monday! 5 days away! Weather is also looking bad so concerned they won’t come!

If it's a public sewer/drain then it's the water company's issue and you should contact them sharpish. Emphasise any characteristics that would put you or others sharing the drain on the Priority Services Register (young children, elderly, disability or health condition) and that the issue is escalating.

Engineer been out and it’s a shared drain between me and the neighbours (neighbours saying their drains ok just now but they are a bit higher up). He said it needs a sooky out vector and wasn’t any point as main drain blocked. Likely the main one is blocked in street

Our shared drain was dealt with by the water company when blocked, they said as it's shared it's their responsibility

Sewer at our old house periodically got blocked, we were at the ‘junction’ for the sewer for the whole street and somebody up the way kept flushing wipes 😬
Water company dealt with it every time and never charged us (even though they threatened a £90 call out fee every time!)
Are the water company outsourcing to Dynorod?

NewGreenDuck · 01/01/2025 18:11

If it's shared then you contact the water company. I'm responsible for the drain in my back yard up to the fence onto next door. Neither of us is responsible for the shared drain that passes under his back yard, that's the water company.

If it's a shared foul drain and your neighbours aren't affected, it's not the drain in the street that has the problem.

It certainly can be, especially if they are a lower level than the neighbours. They are closer and will experience problems sooner.

Agree. We're the last house of four on the lateral drain before it hits the main sewer in the road. The main sewer has been blocked a couple of times and our downstairs loo will start backing up long before the next house up the alley experiences any problems.

And of course we're the ones who get the pass-agg letters from Thames about what can go down the drains, and not any of the houses further up.

I’ve called the water company. Said they have up to a 72 hour turnaround time during holiday season but shell say it’s a priority as our downstairs loo is almost full of backed up sewage! Hopefully they’ll come sooner!

So the neighbours are affected, they just haven't noticed yet.
(they'll almost certainly have a gurgling in the vent pipe, etc. that precedes the more obvious signs)

I had something similar and it turned out to be collapsed pipes underground, which blocked everything up. Took ages for someone to figure it out because all the usual drain clearing stuff didn’t work. I ended up using pm247 after a friend recommended them, and they brought the camera down to confirm it pretty quickly. Definitely worth checking if that’s what’s causing the backup.
