Tumble dry 99% of clothes

Have tried dehumidifier and air drying etc , often it’s to wet / cold in England to dry outside (though In summer I’d make the effort to). A lot of my t shirts when drying in utility room with dehumidifier don’t look great so today I decided to tumble dry on a gentle setting - short time later they come out like new , smells nice , soft to touch , a lot less creases etc. tempted to have the tumble drier as my goal to for drying going forwards. Has anyone else done this against label advice?

Occasionally - but I’ve found that repeated tumble drying of clothes that have the no tumble sign resulting gradual shrinkage in a lot of cases.

Boredlass · 29/12/2024 13:04

I tumble everything but I have a heat pump one which is better for the clothes

KitsyWitsy · 29/12/2024 13:06

I hang all mine to dry. Tumble is just for underwear, towels and bedding.

I don’t like shrunken clothes!

fixingmylife · 29/12/2024 13:16

I don't have a tumble drier. Today, I have hung the washing on the line outside. It's sunny and a breeze. It might not dry completely but better than having it hanging around the house in winter for me personally.

SeaToSki · 29/12/2024 13:18

I tumble dry almost everything and just choose everyday clothes that can take it.

JetskiSkyJumper · 29/12/2024 13:20

It depends. If they have logos/pics etc on it does ruin them eventually ime.

WalterdelaMare · 29/12/2024 13:21

We tumble dry pretty much everything, all year round.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 29/12/2024 13:23

Agree with all the above, it takes time but it dies eventually ruin clothing. When I still had a tumble dryer I only ever used it for towels and socks, no clothing at all.
I actually got rid of my tumble dryer 3 years ago and bought a standard heated airer and one with a heater and a tent-and I’ve never looked back. The tented airer drys towels super soft and drops all the creases out of clothes, and the standard one is great for underwear and tea towels

I'm thinking of getting one, do you find it a lot cheaper to run?

Strawber · 29/12/2024 13:36

Just purchase clothes that allow tumble fry use, most good quality clothes allow this like from M&S, next etc. most clothes from the likes of primark can't go into tumble dryer. I've been drying my clothes loek this for years as only way to guarantee they won't smell and don't have to have the heating on all the time.

How do people's clothes not smell like damp when sitting out

Lm1981 · 29/12/2024 17:43

Yeah we have had a problem with clothes smelling musty even when the dehumidifier is on. They also dry very ridged. Tumble dryer on the other hand they came out lovely.

I tumble dry everything but also have a heat pump dryer which is much gentler on clothes.

crouchendtigerr · 29/12/2024 17:56

I've been tumble drying late.y on a low temp setting.

Iloveeverycat · 29/12/2024 18:01

I tumble dry everything. Anything delicate I put on low setting for shorter time. They come out lovely. Items always seem to go stiff when left to dry.

SwordToFlamethrower · 29/12/2024 18:08

We use the line for 6 months of the year. We tumble bath and bedding in the winter and dry as much as possible indoors

dollybird · 29/12/2024 18:16

We haven't had a tumble dryer for years, and rarely used it when we did have one. Everything always came out really scrunched up and impossible to iron. We just air dry on an airer or outside on the line if the weather's ok. Don't have any problems with smells or crispiness.

Floralnomad · 29/12/2024 18:20

I tumble dry anything that can be which is probably 75% of washing in this house .

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2024 18:25

I tumble dry anything that won't shrink, and all towels and bedding.

I'd prefer to line dry outside but the Irish weather puts paid to that most of the time.

I don't have the patience of my friend, who tells me if you leave your washing on the line for a week it'll be dry 😒

CatsorDogsrule · 29/12/2024 18:34

I heat pump tumble dry about 95% of laundry all year round. I have solar panels too, so costs very little and no ironing.

CarmelaBrunella · 29/12/2024 18:38

I tumble dry everything. Nothing shrinks, I just use a more gentle setting for some items.
I can't be faffing with lines and humidifiers and whatnot.

modgepodge · 29/12/2024 18:41

I’ve got one built in to my washing machine having never had one before. Since the birth of baby number 2 I am struggling to keep on top of washing, plus have nowhere to put airers full of clothes for days, as what was essentially my laundry drying room is now his room! So I am starting to use it a lot more - initially just towels and bedding but I’m starting to do kids clothes and stuff and have to say it is a lot easier…

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 29/12/2024 18:41

Doesn't anyone hang their clothes outside, say from April til September? Tumble drying uses so much energy and is bad for the planet!

ZippyBlueViper · 29/12/2024 18:42

I tumble dry everything. Even the sofa covers which say strictly not to 🤣 i can't be doing with things taking ages to dry, feeling rough and smelling. I just put it on a lower heat setting for things that aren't ment to be tumble dried

ShatnersWoodwind · 29/12/2024 18:45

I only tumble dry clothes I don't care about as I have ruined countless decent clothes after too many runs through the tumble dryer. I've now put a couple of hanging poles in the utility room along with a dehumidifier, works well.

Lm1981 · 29/12/2024 18:52

Thanks for all replies tumble drier for the win
