Tumble dry 99% of clothes

Have tried dehumidifier and air drying etc , often it’s to wet / cold in England to dry outside (though In summer I’d make the effort to). A lot of my t shirts when drying in utility room with dehumidifier don’t look great so today I decided to tumble dry on a gentle setting - short time later they come out like new , smells nice , soft to touch , a lot less creases etc. tempted to have the tumble drier as my goal to for drying going forwards. Has anyone else done this against label advice?

I hang everything up in the utility and the dehumidifier dries a 9kg load on about 3 hours. Not stiff or smelly- do you have very very hard water?

I have a heat pump drier and do use that for a big load of towels or large sheets in winter but prefer hanging clothes as they then go straight into wardrobes.

I have a new heat pump dryer and everything dries quickly and no shrinkage or crispy hot over drying.

I hang items that might not fare well in a dryer in a room with a dehumidifier

I've started to put non dryer items in the dryer on a gentle tumble so they're part dried and they've been absolutely fine

It would be full of spiders if you leave it out even once overnight. Yuk no chance

My sheets are staying out overnight tonight after we had rain after dry day forecast. Can't be arsed bringing them in. I have a heat pump drier arriving next week 😀

Can I please ask how long a set of duvet cover/ fitted bottom sheet and 4 pillow cases for a king size bed take to dry in a heat pump tumble dryer? I might think about getting one.

KittenPause · 30/12/2024 19:06

@Flossflower in mine about an hour

KittenPause · 30/12/2024 19:28

Or less

Flossflower · 30/12/2024 20:19

@KittenPause thanks for the answer.

My TD has a gentle and refresh setting I use for delicates. I use the TD for everything except underwired bras

It depends. If they have logos/pics etc on it does ruin them eventually ime.

Dry those inside out.

Yes OP, most of my laundry is tumble dried. I have a heat pump one so it is very cheap. It has a moisture sensor so stops when the clothes are dry. It also has a gentle care setting that is low heat so things don’t shrink. Of course coats, linen and wool are hung dry, but everything else is tumble dried.

Doesn't anyone hang their clothes outside, say from April til September? Tumble drying uses so much energy and is bad for the planet!

I don’t because the pigeons and sea gulls poo all over
The new tumble dryers use less energy than running a fridge

I tumble dry most things and know which items won’t take it so just hang up those. It isn’t so bad now but when the children were little I had a lot of washing and a small house. I didn’t have space to hang up loads, especially in winter. I do tend to hang washing outside in the summer though.

Growlybear83 · 31/12/2024 10:23

I dry everything outside most of the year, weather permitting, and the rest of the time I've got a large a frame heated drying rack from John Lewis, which I have always found excellent. I've got a combined washed / drier but have only used the tumble drying function three times in the years I've had it.

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 01/01/2025 10:21

Line dry all year round. The weather forecasting is pretty accurate these days 🙂
