Public Laundrette

wouldyoudothisforu · 26/12/2024 11:39

Just checking what people think and opinions on using public laundrette for yourself and family everyday clothes.

My washing machine is broken and still waiting for the engineer to come repair but I have about 6 big black bin bags of clothes to wash and it it getting on my nerves now and I wanna take it to the local laundrette

But the thought of using a public laundrette not knowing what previous users have put in it is bothering me.

That thought wouldn’t even occur to me. If my washing machine was broken I would 100% use a launderette

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 26/12/2024 11:41

It’s a launderette, not a meth lab. Your clothes will be fine. I’ve never had a problem with them.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/12/2024 11:43

What? This is quite bizarre. Just go to the launderette! What do you think you're going to catch?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/12/2024 11:47

We were between houses for over a year and I used launderette regularly but got tge ladies to do it for ne rather than wait around. All fine. Would use again.

wouldyoudothisforu · 26/12/2024 11:48

I am going to use it as I have no choose at all

Just now struggling to find one close by as there is hardly any in this town

I did this. There was a sign saying no horse blankets. I had about a month or more of washing at the launderette. It was chilly so I wrapped up warm. The machines were huge and I did two loads of washing at a time and then four plus goes in the dryers (they were smaller) twice a week. Stay whilst the things are washing/drying in case there’s a problem with the machine or if you’d things get removed onto the floor if you’re late returning. I’ll be doing the duvets etc there as they don’t fit in the home machine. I used big zip bags to carry the washing easily.

We were renovating and lived in a caravan in the garden and often used a laundrette at that time. What is your concern about using one?
Ours wasn't a public one, but a shop on the highstreet. You could wash things yourself, or pay for a service wash. You drop the bags off and pick them up dried and folded. More expensive, but saved hours of sitting in the laundrette waiting for the washing.

Pamosonic · 26/12/2024 11:59

There is a snobbery stigma with launderettes but it's just a place with lots of washing machines no different to your own washing machine.

Ladybyrd · 26/12/2024 12:02

We had to and it was as fine until my partner did his dressing gown in the drier. It came back stinking of dog so someone had obviously used it for their pets bedding - very off putting.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 26/12/2024 12:06

For anyone squeamish/worried about hair or hygiene -

take some anti bac wipes and give the inside of the drum a good swipe round before you use it. I have never felt the need and have used laundrettes regularly. Most of the ones inside are wiped regularly by staff anyway.

op in your position I would have gone days ago - all the laundry and perhaps wet towels building up?!

NewGreenDuck · 26/12/2024 12:07

If you're worried, bung a bit of disinfectant in.

Chowtime · 26/12/2024 12:09

Won't your neighbour/friend/family member let you use theirs? For urgent stuff? And you can handwash the rest.

Seasonsfeastings · 26/12/2024 12:17

I had similar situation. Found a launderette in a village rather that the town. Take plenty of 50ps and £1. The machines are really fast. Full wash in 25 minutes. I took a book to read but forgot washing powder and fabric conditioner, luckily there was a co- op nearby. I would give it a go in your shoes

livingafulllife · 26/12/2024 12:25

Its a laundrette ffs.
Ive used them more than once.
I use to use my old one weekly last year utill i got a washing machine tbh i really liked going im sad i know.
My mum still uses the laundrette.
I still go when i want my duvet washed.

Starlightstarbright4 · 26/12/2024 12:32

We have a huge washer attached to petrol station here . It is apparently used by lots of people washing pet bedding and horse blankets so is always a bit grim..

A normal laundrette though no issues

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 26/12/2024 12:34

Hi,
There are also some petrol stations or supermarkets that have the larger load 18kg or 20kg drum washers if there are no local launderettes. The dryers are 20kg if you plan on also tumbling it dry.

I've used these for quilts/duvets. Just pay by card and park and wait or return when the load is finished. i just request a reminder text and get a message shortly before the washing machine finishes and park and wait for dryer.
You can search online for your nearest one.

I have no concerns about previous users as the cycle finishes with a clean load of clothes in it.
Hope your machine is repaired soon.

gingerlybread · 26/12/2024 12:36

Launderettes are great and no different to using a washing machine in a campsite. If you're worried just use laundry disinfectant but tbh they are less likely to have mould or nasties than your own machine as they are maintained regularly.

LivingOnTheVeg · 26/12/2024 12:45

When we were having our kitchen redone we took all of our washing down to the laundrette, only to find it was £7 per load and you had to pay in pound coins, and the bloke who owned it bit our head off for asking to change a tenner. It was cheaper for us to drive 45 mins to MIL’s and do it all there. I wouldn’t have thought twice about using their machines before that though as long as they looked/smelled clean, but I hadn’t thought about pet hair tbf.

mitogoshigg · 26/12/2024 12:46

I think they are great unfortunately they all seem to have closed down!

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/12/2024 12:47

Unless someone’s just pooed in it, don’t see the issue. Doesn’t detergent kill things?

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/12/2024 12:48

(When we retire, we’re going to get service washes done and use a linen service for the bedding. Can’t wait!)

Chowtime · 26/12/2024 12:51

The high street ones have, but more have opened outside petrol stations and supermarkets now, as part of a concession. It's more convenient.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/12/2024 12:51

I've never thought about what others have put in the machines. It's a bit of a faff. You need pound coins. The place never has change. What I do is use a Wheely trolley and don't forget the detergent. I then come back when it's done. But then you need to use the dryer. So it's quite a long boring process.

Thelittleweasel · 26/12/2024 13:05

Laundrette machines are like domestic machines in that you put in the dirty clothes which are washed with soap powder and water. At that stage anything unpleasant is loosened and drained away. Then the items are rinsed and any remaining dirt is much diluted and again washed away. Most machines do a hot wash and hot rinse and then a final cold rinse so that anything when the wash is completed has been rinsed away and the drum clean for the next user.

www.thelaundryrevolution.co.uk/

also a washing machine isn't harbouring dirt/germs from other users, its clean.
