Do you LOVE your washing machine?

We bought a washer dryer from John Lewis just before my 3.5yo was born for £720. Which to me is bloody loads of money. We were splashing out on a quality item or so we thought.

It's been absolutely shite since the start and I actually want to cry about it. But I won't. Now it is out of warranty (my fault, I put off calling them because they've been so horrible in the past, and let it go past the 3 year mark without realising. I'm so mad at myself). The dryer doesn't work, all our clothes smell and I have had enough. In order to claim under the consumer rights act John Lewis say I have to pay for an engineer to tell them it's broken. But I don't think I can bring myself to sink another £1-200 into this piece of crap from hell.

So I need to buy a new washing machine in the black friday sale. Quite scared of buying a bad one again, this one has scarred me for life.

Please tell me happy things! There must be an amazing machine out there that you love love love! Doesn't have to be a dryer, at this point I'll settle for a washing machine that, um, washes my family's clothes. Shock horror. Needs a quick cycle like 30 mins, the shortest on this one is like 3 hours. That's about it.

What I will tell you is what I tell everybody. Do not ever ever buy a washer dryer. It doesn't matter what make or model they are s* Everybody I know that has had one and me included in the past says that one element always breaks and it's always the dryer, possibly the washing machine, but the dryer never works properly. Anyway, you are much better by in separate. And quite frankly, I have got a great washing machine. I can't remember the make of it.And you don't need to be paying anywhere near as much as that

Littlemissgobby · 25/11/2024 16:35

You can buy a decent washing machine for 300 or less and a dryer for about 200 so you could save buying two items then you did one

usernother · 25/11/2024 16:36

I love mine. It's old and was a hotpoint one. Never had any problems with it.

dementedpixie · 25/11/2024 16:37

Mine is an ancient Samsung ecobubble

Fjorduk · 25/11/2024 16:38

I bought this one recently and I'm very happy with it

I have the 7kg version of that had it years and happy still going strong

Blarn · 25/11/2024 16:44

We have a Hotpoint one which we bought about 8 years ago and they still make the model (or a very similar one) now. I don't love it but it has a 45min quick wash at 40, a long hot 90 wash, a standard mixed 1hr 30 wash and it just works. Dh has replaced brushes on it which wore out and put the belt back on the other week but apart from that it has merrily washed clothes for 8 years.

PurpleCarpets · 25/11/2024 16:45

I've never been able to get very excited about them. They claim to have washing "technology" and clever systems, but they all

  • full up with warm soapy water
  • slosh your clothes about for a bit
  • spin most of the water out.

None of that has really changed since the 1980s!

DiscoBeat · 25/11/2024 16:47

Our last one was a Samsung eco bubble and it lasted years. But it did have an annoying habit of just stopping mid wash and eventually we replaced it with this one. It's early days yet and I haven't tried linking up the wifi but pretty happy with it so far. It's got a nice big drum and some good programmes. It's also quieter than the last one.

Do you LOVE your washing machine?
DiscoBeat · 25/11/2024 16:48

Sorry the make isn't readable. It's a Hoover H-Wash.

SleepingisanArt · 25/11/2024 16:49

Mine is a Miele (WCA030) which replaced my previous Miele of 18+ years. Its the simplest one they do and I love it! (Loved the previous one also.) Not cheap but they do wash well and last a looooong time. When the last one died the engineers call out charge was deducted from the price of the new machine as he said it needed to be replaced (the part and labour would have been more than a new machine). I have found their customer service to be excellent on the few times I've needed to call them.

I bought a washer dryer years ago and it was a disaster even though it was a decent brand

Never again

My washing machine is a Bosch and has lasted ages and is still going strong

I've just bought a new dryer after hanging g everything up with a dehumidifier which has been fine but I just want a dryer now

Chrysanthemum5 · 25/11/2024 16:51

I had the Samsung Eco Bubble bought and fitted by AO. It literally jumped all over the floor during the spin cycle AO told me I was not a washing machine engineer so didn't understand how much noise is normal 🤔Samsung told me that their engineer said my floor was wooden (it's not) and that you can't have a washing machine on a wooden floor.

The machine broke down after a week and flooded. Both AO and Samsung were hopeless even thought I have a disabled child they just wouldn't help. In the end I just cut my losses and got an AEG which is fine

So I guess my advice is anything except Samsung and don't buy from AO

FixingStuff · 25/11/2024 16:52

I had a washer dryer once and it was also terrible. I had to get the credit card company to make them give my money back.

I have a miele now and it's amazing, but bosch are also always very good. It's important to get separates though. Even the shop manager told me that, after I got my money back. Apparently all washer dryers are terrible.

ZiggyZowie · 25/11/2024 16:53

YES !!

I've got an American top loader which came with the house when I moved in.

It's 35 years old and NEVER broken down.

I LOVE it. !!

LilacLilyBird · 25/11/2024 16:53

I've just bought a Miele dryer being delivered this week. It's one of those heat pump ones which some people hate but apparently this one is fine and does actually dry things properly

cindertoffeeapple · 25/11/2024 16:54

I like my Bosch washing machine. The delay timer is brilliant as instead of saying when you want it to start, you say when you want it to finish and it does the maths and works out when to start.

cindertoffeeapple · 25/11/2024 16:56

Meant to say it’s the WAJ28002GB from John Lewis but they don’t seem to have that exact one any more.

Choosenandenough · 25/11/2024 17:00

I love mine! Samsung with one of those Add Wash things that you can pause the wash and add extra items into the drum - that’s my favourite bit.

Elley123 · 25/11/2024 17:02

I have had a Hoover 8kg 1600 spin model number DYN 8164 D2X for 10 years and stil going strong ( I hope I haven't jinxed it now!). It has 3 quick washes 14/30/44 mins . If not using quick wash I use the daily 59 min wash most of the time.which can be 40 or 60 Deg. There are longer hotter and cooler washes. It's been a great little machine . They keep bringing the same one out under updated model numbers so it must be popular. Not expensive or fancy looking but a good workhorse washer.

ProssecoSparkle · 25/11/2024 17:04

I had a washer/dryer years ago it was rubbish. Sold it after a few months.

I generally buy a cheap washing machine that does what I need. Have a Candy one at the moment it has a 14 minute quick wash.

Have a separate tumble dryer.

I never pay any more than £200/£300 for a washing machine would rather spend money on other things. Each to their own though and I am slightly jealous of the pp with the Samsung bubble you can fling dirty clothes in mid wash Grin

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/11/2024 17:04

Samsung eco bubble.it plays a cheery little tune at the end of the wash and has a little door you can add forgotten things to the wash.

Snap!

LilacLilyBird · 25/11/2024 17:08

I can add clothes I've forgotten to my old Bosch washing machine - I think because the drum is low in the water - I've only tried it during the first 15 mins or so

It's so handy
