Is anyone just starting to declutter? Or hasn't yet.

I know there's lots of decluttering threads but I'm just starting (again) but this time I mean business.
What's inspired you to declutter now? Mine is clearing out an elderly relative's home and realising I don't want dcs to ever have that much stuff to clear. Plus it's quite depressing having too much stuff.
Dh and I travel a lot, mainly uk, and you realise you need very little to get on in life.

I'm not going minimalist although can see the appeal.

Care to join? I won't be counting items but I will list as much as possible. I should really try and sell some stuff but cba.

I’ve got to tackle the freezers, and get them organised!
Everyweek we go shopping and the new stuff gets thrown in on top and then older stuff never gets eaten!
I do lots of baking so lots of it in in the freezers, also I cook extra so in that goes too, I need to check dates on a lot of meals I’ve made and froze!
Apart from that the rest of my house is clutter free!

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/11/2024 20:26

Marking place to join in tomorrow. I am Swedish Death Cleaning in our house that we've lived in since 2004, it's a mammoth task!

DizzyWaltzer · 24/11/2024 20:32

I’m on “round 2” of decluttering my home, 95% of the stuff was collected by a charity called Anglo. I book a collection date and it motivates me to fill at least one box for them to take away! Here’s a link to their website: https://anglodoorstepcollections.co.uk/

i also use Olio to declutter my larder.

Anglo Doorstep Collections - Charity Collections

We offer a free charity doorstep collection service. We collect the donations from your door, then donate to your selected charity.

This week I put a few things on a giveaway site, bucket and spades, football, some craft supplies - all not touched for at least 4 years. I need to find somewhere to get rid of quite a lot of nerf guns if anyone has any suggestions? Ds would ideally like a bit of money for them but is realistic that he won’t get much..

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 24/11/2024 20:52

I NEED to join this thread. We want/need to move (getting old), and absolutely have to declutter. Cleared PIL house in 2020 and it was so horrendous we swore we wouldn't inflict it on our DCs. A great idea, but we really need to follow through ...

When we do declutter, we just want rid there and then, so no Freecycle/Gumtree/eBay/Vinted for us, it's either the charity shop or the tip. If we hesitate, it'll never leave the house! I swear DH is a bigger hoarder than I am, but he would disagree. I still have stuff from my parents' house, cleared in 1996!!!!
I struggle parting with stuff that's perfectly good but unloved/unused etc. Also with stuff that has sentimental value. Neither of our DCs will want to keep much, based on past behaviour (good for them!).

Well done to everyone on what you've achieved so far. Hope I can catch up. I should say this is not the first decluttering thread I've joined - but I hope it's the last!

ParsnipPuree · 24/11/2024 21:05

I've given up as impossible to rein in dh's buying of needless items. When I open cupboards they literally fall on my head.

BrightYellowStar · 24/11/2024 21:10

I started this weekend. Cleared out 2 cupboards (bedroom - large walk in and upstairs hallway). Got rid of 4 black bin bags worth of stuff (mostly rubbish like old shoe boxes etc). Sold some stuff on Vinted.

Next up - the downstairs cupboards! I feel like I'm on a roll and need to keep the momentum going.

I found that putting 80s disco music on helped motivate me tackling a tricky declutter - I could dance with binbags out to the bin and don't care what the neighbours thought!

Yes!!! I have also found this to be a great decluttering strategy. It keeps me feeling positive and my energy levels high.

LushLemonTart · 24/11/2024 22:31

Well done all of you that have started.

The dining room is being tackled tomorrow.

This weekend I did kids soft toys, and we will donate those no longer wanted for the school Christmas fair, also went through my baking cupboard and got rid of all the bits I haven't, and don't envisage using. Still have a huge plastic box for the loft full of 'essential baking kit' and a double cupboard in the kitchen.

Tonight I will take a break from de-cluttering to do some Christmas shopping. Then onto the odd and sods cupboard in the kitchen.

LushLemonTart · 25/11/2024 11:17

Well done @Hoolahoophop . I'm off up to the loft today then tackling the dining room.

@LushLemonTart your brave, i don't fancy the loft, we are lucky ours has managed to hold the weight of all the junk up there!

Best of luck and many mugs of restorative tea!

PinkribbonBonnBonn · 25/11/2024 12:35

Just declutterred the under-stairs cupboard. Had a good throw out . Living room cabinet next.

JacksonBrodieJacksonLamb · 25/11/2024 15:10

I had a good go at the utility/room of doom yesterday while my partner listed some stuff and took five bags to the charity shop as the kids played. I threw out some old plastic sheets I’d held on to for decorating for five years but never used. I did a quick pass through a drawer of doom. Need to book a dump run next. I listen to a deeply uncool soundtrack of tv theme tunes (Murder She Wrote, BBC Cricket, The A Team, etc) when I’m cleaning or decluttering. I don’t know why it works, but it does.

We have family coming to stay and a lot of other stuff happening with work/home/family in the next six weeks, so I need to pause the decluttering and just keep on top of cleaning and tidying around work, etc.

Sunshineandrainbow · 25/11/2024 22:49

I desperately need this thread,I struggle to get motivated to do anything at the weekends but like you the thought of my children having to do it upsets me.

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 10:21

@Hoolahoophop our loft has stairs so it's just another room going from our bedroom.

@Sunshineandrainbow it's not easy but it'll be worth it for peace of mind.

Re lofts - DH has made a rule for himself: whenever he needs to get something out of the loft, he brings down at least one thing, however small, to dispose of. At the current rate of progress, the loft will be empty in about, oh, maybe 50 years?! 😂

LushLemonTart · 26/11/2024 21:10

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst 🤣. Same here.

BadSkiingMum · 27/11/2024 13:54

Well a photo frame and set of coasters from the box I brought downstairs have made it to the charity shop. I had to temporarily admit defeat and put some ephemera into a smaller box, as the floor was due to be cleaned, but I will get back to it.

ChillWith · 27/11/2024 13:59

Would love to join you! Have started with my clothes and motivated by selling loads on Vinted last weekend!

LushLemonTart · 27/11/2024 14:06

Well done.

Took a camera box a big bag of clothes etc and a box of drinking glasses and other things to BHF yesterday. Putting a set of unused weights on quid bid over the weekend. Oh and a wooden blanket box.

OP posts:
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 29/11/2024 19:46

Dropped a teeny tiny bag of bits off at a charity shop today. I tried to put something else in, on the grounds it's been sitting in a cupboard, never used, but DH said "oh but I SHOULD use it!" See what I'm up against, LOL.
Well done everybody, especially those of you successfully turning clutter into cash 👍

LushLemonTart · 29/11/2024 22:35

Sold weights for 25 I could leave them longer as still bidding time until Sunday but am happy with 25. Blanket box is up to £9. We bought it for 5 and dh painted it.
I'm going to do more as off for a while now.

OP posts:
LushLemonTart · 29/11/2024 22:36

Well done @ICouldHaveCheckedFirst . Is dh a bit of a hoarder? Best getting rid when he isn't looking.

Have bagged up and dropped off six bags of bric a brac and clothes to charity shop this week. Hoping to declutter more this weekend but will have to wait until tomorrow as busy today
