Laundry baskets - what do you have?

Natasha198 · 30/09/2024 21:38

Very exciting topic here! Currently we have a washing basket in our room and 1 in DS's room, but ideally I'd like a laundry basket with 3 sections for lights, darks and colours for us all. Do you have one similar or do you just have 2 sections for lights / darks? Or do you just shove it all in one big basket. Just trying to make my life easier! Thanks

We have two of the IKEA tall cylinder bags, one in each bathroom. All laundry is washed on the weekend, usually 3-4 loads. Me, DH, 2 DC

Apple22over7 · 01/10/2024 21:01

We use ikea sortera bins. They're meant to be used for sorting recycling, but they're really useful for laundry too. We have three on the landing, stacked on top of each other - one for lights, one for darks, and one for towels & bedding. They have flappy lids too, so you can close them to hide the contents when you have guests/contain the smell.

ToffeeForEveryone · 01/10/2024 21:06

This is great, each section holds 1 wash load so just bung in when getting full. The little bag on the side is great for wet cloths so the rest of the laundry basket doesn't get damp. songmicshome.co.uk/products/songmics-laundry-hamper-with-removable-bag-uklcb363?variant=46811660222802

I have an IKEA Kallak. Apologies for the terrible picture. The baskets are just enough for a load and obviously you can choose how it's divided. 2 adults 1 toddler.

The darks tends to fill up quickest but I tend to do it more frequently now, which for me, has been good; I don't end up with a huge huge pile to wash on a Sunday!

I made the labels on Canva, printed and laminated, stuck on with glue.

Ooh love this idea thanks.

Definitely doing this once the current mountain of laundry has been tackled.

Am I the only person who just washes everything & never splits lights & darks?! We have one laundry bin in the bathroom. Family of 3, usually on average 3 washes per week/4 in winter months? I've never had colours run in the wash & don't use colour catchers or anything... I find it bizarre to split it all up! Maybe I've just been lucky!

I don’t even have a laundry basket never mind separate ones for different colours 😂 Everything gets washed together, it’s been fine so far.

Heartbreaktuna · 01/10/2024 21:28

@Funnelcakes you must have magic washing machine. One mixed washed and I'm goosed. Whites go grey, wool shrinks, silk shrivels into oblivion 😂

Fizbosshoes · 01/10/2024 21:32

We have an old school wicker basket on the landing that everyone is meant to put dirty laundry into. 3 of us manage quite fine, DH regularly leaves dirty washing on the floor.
The deal is, if it's in the basket (or the washing machine) I wash it, (i empty the basket and separate light/dark/other) if you leave on the floor/in a bag it doesn't get washed.

I live alone and don't sort washing. My laundry basket is an old rubberised stable bucket which lives under a chair in the kitchen and I use to transport clothing from the machine to the line and back - dirty washing goes straight into the machine when I've finished wearing it to await the wash. I wash everything all together at 40 degrees and have yet to have a disaster.

Nannyfannybanny · 01/10/2024 23:18

Why do people keep a laundry basket in the bedroom. One,most of them are ugly, and don't you undress in the bathroom, washing in the laundry basket in the bathroom, then some kind of wash/shower before bed! Most people I know have a laundry basket or bag in the bathroom. Why do we sort washing,a couple of weeks ago a pair of my white cotton pants, got accidently washed with DH black trousers, they came out grey, straight in the rubbish bin. My sil puts all her washing in together, white socks are not white, they're grey and stiff.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/10/2024 23:45

My laundry basket is in the bedroom because that's where I get changed.

I don't want my dirty laundry in the bathroom where guests go.

No I don't undress in the bathroom and it's too small to fit a laundry basket anyway. I undress in the bedroom and wash in the morning not the evening.

DiscoBeat · 02/10/2024 06:58

We've got one in each bathroom. Every morning I put the contents into the sorting trolley in the laundry room then when a section is full it's a load. That way no laundry in the house.

So do we. Only 2 of us here and I split darks/lights/sports kit/handwash. Each box is the size of a load and provides a handy basket to carry the clothes to the line when they’re done in the machine. I love that it’s so neat and tidy - I grew up with a pile of clothes that was added to on my parents bedroom floor.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/10/2024 09:23

Do you underdress in the bedroom then, then go into the shower in the morning. I don't have a big bathroom, the laundry bin is a corner one. When my DKs were at home,it was a wicker Ali barba style in the bathroom,my ironing basket is a nice wicker one as well. There isn't room for a laundry basket in our bedroom, and I'm sorry but those IKEA ones are ugly. Those horrified at people using the bathroom, mine has a hinged lid,no one sees the dirty washing.

That looks like a filing cabinet!

SatinHeart · 02/10/2024 09:35

We have one massive one for the whole household. That way we know with a single glance exactly how much washing there is that needs doing, and nothing lurks in DC bedrooms etc. It's wooden with a lid so not ugly and lives in our bedroom purely for reasons of space.

I don't separate lights and darks, and if I want to do white load it is quite quick to pull out the whites by eye.

DogwoodTree · 02/10/2024 10:13

I’m quite neurotic about washing as I’ve had so many nice things ruined by careless laundering over the years and I like to keep things for as ling as possible. so, I separate my colours, darks, and lights in my laundry drawers. The darks I keep separate as I use a special dark detergent for them- otherwise I guess I’d put them in with colours and only have two compartments. .

anyway, I also keep a large delicates mesh bag in each dirty laundry drawer (darks/lights) and put any wool or silk (etc) items directly in there when I’ve finished wearing them. They’re less likely to be accidentally laundered with the regular clothes that way, and if they do accidentally make it through a wash, they’ll be spotted before they go in the tumble dryer. Once the bag has a good number of items in, I’ll do a delicates wash.

Koalaslippers · 02/10/2024 10:31

3 woven baskets on the landing. Darks, white, uniform. The uniform is always prioritised when a dark or white wash is done.

Ugh. That is so disrespectful. Glad you don't pick up for him.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/10/2024 18:45

I've got a metal sign,it says,"clothes not in the washing basket don't get washed". I have to sort my lights m I have LS and vulval eczema, Im only allowed to wear boring 100% white cotton pants, they have to be washed in non bio and no fabric conditioner.

Same here. Family of 4, two washes a week for clothes. All gets shoved in the same basket then shovelled in the machine. Extra wash for towels (one week) or bedding (the next week) which we pile up on the floor next to the machine for the 5mins it takes to gather them all.

Ours is the same. Even the 3 and 1yo know to put their clothes in the basket! I don't bother picking it up for DH, in the same way that I don't turn his clothes out the right way either. It goes in the machine the same way it goes in the basket, and that is how it gets hung and folded too. He still hasn't learnt yet 🙈

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/10/2024 18:58

Always used a 3 sided white plastic one that fits neatly under the bathroom sink.
Completely unobtrusive and been going strong for over 25 years now.

Onlyplans · 02/10/2024 19:02

I’ve got the Joseph Joseph double one although they have made a triple which I’d love.
it is pricey but I love it and the individual baskets lift out
