Laundry baskets - what do you have?

Very exciting topic here! Currently we have a washing basket in our room and 1 in DS's room, but ideally I'd like a laundry basket with 3 sections for lights, darks and colours for us all. Do you have one similar or do you just have 2 sections for lights / darks? Or do you just shove it all in one big basket. Just trying to make my life easier! Thanks

I just use tubtrugs. Dump it all on the floor and sort whites, darks and hot wash.

I have 2 - one white/light one dark/black, kept in the landing

DS gym gear needs as wash with Laundry cleanser liquid so black / dark socks and underwear can go in too

White towels and white clothes get washed seperate .
Bras and delicates go on a low temp/low spin cycle .
I use laundry bags in the wash to keep small items together or protect anything delicate

One main basket and a separate one for things that need a wool wash/nonbio. I sort the main lot into lights and darks and sometimes a separate load of reds.

Who undresses in the bathroom? I mean why on earth would you? I undress in our bedroom.

Oblomov24 · 02/10/2024 20:19

I don't have one if these but I do like it.

To be fair I sometimes undress in the bathroom rather than bedroom because we have a downstairs bathroom, but not always. Just depends whether I want to run the gauntlet of the house with no clothes on!

Clothes just get taken up to the laundry basket though.

We have 6 of these stacked on the landing, and then a general laundry basket in the utility room for things that need a boil wash like tea towels/ dishcloths.

Ah it didn’t add the picture! This

We have exactly the same one! Whites, darks, pastels and hot wash.

6??? You must have a big landing! What do you put in 6 different baskets?

Not really-they stack so take a similar floor space to other baskets .

I separate out whites, dark colours, red/pink shades, mid-shades (blue/green/grey etc) , delicates/woollens, and sports kit.

notnorman · 03/10/2024 08:27

3 zippy bags in the laundry. Light, darks, and everything else. Because they are bags they don't take much space when empty and zips so they can be closed - I don't like washing baskets for dirty stuff.

Have one for DH’s work clothes and one for everyone else. I found the sectional ones for darks, lights, whites etc not that helpful. Usually the whites have very little in and the dark section over flows and then what about needing to separate delicates, knitwear etc. Easier to shove in one and sort as needed!

Haha I find exactly the opposite! I have one with three sections - light, dark, and “complicated” 😁

The darks always fill up first but that’s ok, we put the wash on when it gets full. I particularly like having a separate bit for the woollens, silks, “wash this separately as the colours will run”, etc, as it’s the headache of sorting that out from the normal stuff that annoyed me. I like how I can just grab a load and go without any sorting.

That said, the kids have separate baskets in their rooms - I do sift through theirs as there isn’t room in there for compartments, but it’s “school shirts and cricket whites” vs “everything else” so easy enough, no woollens or silks or fancy hand wash.

Jeezitneverends · 03/10/2024 08:44

I have this in one bathroom, and similar in the others. They’re not sectioned, they just get emptied and sorted before I put a wash on, I’ve always done it like this so no issues.

Its taken the best part of 20 years to get through to the family that if it’s not in the basket it doesn’t get washed, I’m not starting a battlefront over getting them to separate it 🤣

Jeezitneverends · 03/10/2024 08:46

Forgot to attach the pic 🤣I got it in TK Maxx after looking for a loooong time when my 25 year old Ali Baba basket gave up the ghost

Ha ha yes I totally get the “complicated” pile 🤣 usually tops with white and coloured stripes or DS’s football tops that are white with colours. I also wash my gym gear and underwear separately as I need to use a different washing liquid for them.

I have this, it's great

I love the idea of that, but it’s quite utilitarian and I feel that my laundry needs more, er, privacy!

doodleschnoodle · 03/10/2024 09:23

We have one big one on landing for dirty clothes and one in utility room for clean clothes to go into and they get swapped round when either approaches full. I don't sort clothes, they all go in together with a colour catcher, so everything is in one. Find it easiest that way.

Heckythump1 · 03/10/2024 09:26

We have a kallax too, one box for whites/lights, one for colours, one for darks and one for towels.
Works well, other than I seem to be the only one who can actually put stuff in the boxes, everyone else just dumps stuff in front of the unit :P

BadSkiingMum · 03/10/2024 09:28

There is some great laundry basket game on this thread! I am in the market for one and have clearly been looking in the wrong places.

Notmynamerightnow · 03/10/2024 09:32

We have 2 of these in the downstairs bathroom - Ikea Filur. I wanted sealed bins with lids as I've had spiders crawl out of the washing a couple of times whilst it has been in my arms. They don't actually work that well as people dump stuff on the lids, not washing, but toilet roll, toiletries and whatever, so then washing gets thrown on the floor. Atm I have an IKEA blue bag in front of the washer and washing gets tossed in it.

We have exactly the same one! Whites, darks, pastels and hot wash.

Our split is kids clothes, general wash, whites and heavy (jumpers, jeans etc)
