Laundry baskets - what do you have?

Very exciting topic here! Currently we have a washing basket in our room and 1 in DS's room, but ideally I'd like a laundry basket with 3 sections for lights, darks and colours for us all. Do you have one similar or do you just have 2 sections for lights / darks? Or do you just shove it all in one big basket. Just trying to make my life easier! Thanks

One per person, they each get washed on their own when full as it’s much easier to wash that way and no sorting required.

DD’s stuff gets filthy and has a long 40 with stain remover, mine is mostly a 30
quick wash and DH has different again. So separate baskets is much better.

We have 2 in our bedroom. 1 for dark colours and one for lights/whites. Similar to these

The kids have a pop up one in each of their bedrooms too

NotMeekNotObedient · 30/09/2024 22:34

I have an IKEA Kallak. Apologies for the terrible picture. The baskets are just enough for a load and obviously you can choose how it's divided. 2 adults 1 toddler.

The darks tends to fill up quickest but I tend to do it more frequently now, which for me, has been good; I don't end up with a huge huge pile to wash on a Sunday!

I made the labels on Canva, printed and laminated, stuck on with glue.

The kids have a slim Addis one in each of their rooms and there is a main one in the spare room for me and DH with two compartments for darks and lights. I then get the kids ones and separate their washing Into the two compartments each has a removable bag so I can just grab the bag of whites and take downstairs to the washing machine.

An original Lloyd loom in the bathroom, painted and covered to match the towels. Only 2 of us now.

Illpickthatup · 30/09/2024 23:02

DSS does his own washing so has his own basket in his room.

I have 2 wash baskets downstairs, one for lights and one for darks. We all just bring our washing down and put it in the baskets each morning.

I don't know whether Ikea still do these, buy I have three narrow laundry baskets that were designed to fit inside Pax wardrobes. They sit very neatly in an alcove in our upstairs landing. Darks, lights and delicates. Easy to check which one is full enough to put a load on and take it downstairs.

AdoraBell · 30/09/2024 23:27

In the bathroom.

AdoraBell · 30/09/2024 23:29

Sorry, posted too soon. I just space for have one.

DogwoodTree · 30/09/2024 23:31

We have a three drawer chest of drawers on the landing: whites/delicates, colours, and dark/heavy load. Works great, looks good - we have a lamp and photo frames on the top so it’s a pretty as well as functional, and because it’s a common type of furniture we were able to find something to exactly fit the space. I spent ages looking for a nice laundry basket until I twigged it didn’t actually have to be a laundry basket.

BeMintBee · 30/09/2024 23:33

Have one for DH’s work clothes and one for everyone else. I found the sectional ones for darks, lights, whites etc not that helpful. Usually the whites have very little in and the dark section over flows and then what about needing to separate delicates, knitwear etc. Easier to shove in one and sort as needed!

We have one like this on the landing but it has a liner that you take out with all the washing in to take to the machine.

Everyone drops their stuff in it on their way downstairs and when it's full someone brings the lining bag down.

I hardly dare admit this but we don't sort washing at all until it is dry then I make a pile for each person on the worktop in the utility room. All colours get washed in together.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2024 23:34

None. 3 of us here, atm. Dirties go in the machine and it’s all washed when it’s full.

I have this, it's great

Oo thanks, I'll have a look at IKEA to see! I think they have some Skubb ones still.

This is a good idea. Might look for a chest of drawers instead!

We shove it all in one, and keep it on the landing. I tend to go through it once a week and sort into darks and whites/v lights, and do 2-3 washes from the piles. Anything like towels and bedding never touches the basket. We don't have the space for different baskets and a good 80% of our washing is darks. (I have a wide definition of darks and I rarely bought white for my kids except for school uniform - suncream stains are annoying.)

My eldest does her own darks now, which she collects in a separate basket in her room. She has very few lights which she puts into the general wash. We only bought her the separate basket when she started doing her own.

That's the one DP bought to keep the cat in. Well, he thought it was for whites and colourfast lights, but the cat decided differently.

It makes a change from the lovely wicker one that the cat sharpens his claws on, I suppose.

TheNuthatch · 01/10/2024 20:47

We have one big one on the landing (family of 5). Everyone puts their dirties in and it's brought downstairs to the utility every evening. Laundry is then sorted ready for washing as soon as there's a full load or darks, whites etc. I just use basic plastic baskets for sorting that I keep in the utility room. I hate leaving dirty laundry upstairs. It gives me the ick.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/10/2024 20:47

We have this 4 bag in a frame setup and it changed my life 😂 the bags are soft so easy to carry up and down the stairs, and hold about exactly a load.

Am I the only person who just washes everything & never splits lights & darks?! We have one laundry bin in the bathroom. Family of 3, usually on average 3 washes per week/4 in winter months? I've never had colours run in the wash & don't use colour catchers or anything... I find it bizarre to split it all up! Maybe I've just been lucky!
