Cleaning inside windows

No matter how I clean them, they very soon look dirty again. I’ve tried window cleaner spray, washing up liquid and a Karcher, white vinegar. Nothing seems to last. What should I try next?

Crikey! Do you think you are getting a tad obsessed? I bought a karcher too and couldn't get on with it. My DD who has an immaculate house swears by a squeegee. Might be worth a go 😉

DustyLee123 · 14/09/2024 08:38

The Karcher often leaves lines on the window where I’ve used it.
No, not getting obsessed as cleaning is not something I could get obsessed about! But I am getting fed up of spending my time cleaning them, only to see marks and dust on them again. Maybe I should get full nets so I can’t see it!

E-cloths from Amazon. Wet and wrong out the textured one and buff the windows dry with the smooth one.

Ifailed · 14/09/2024 09:08

Blade, washing-up liquid in water and a scrim.

AnOldCynic · 14/09/2024 09:25

Diluted vinegar and newspaper.

DatingDinosaur · 14/09/2024 12:20

When you say they soon look dirty again do you mean you can see stripes from the cleaning or they get grubby after a couple of days?

If the former then your cleaning technique needs changing - good suggestions to try by previous posters.

If the latter, well, like anything, nothing stays clean forever and if you live in a high pollution (eg. main road, lots of traffic) area then they will get grubby quicker and there isn't an amazing wonder-product that will stop that happening less frequently.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/09/2024 12:21

Minky window clothes (green ones). Brilliant. Dampen, wring out, wipe, done. One of the best household products I’ve come across in 40 years of housekeeping.
And we all get to impersonate inspector clousseau when we use them 😁

Sera1989 · 14/09/2024 12:33

Window or glass cloths (e cloths) are brilliant and can be used damp or with product. But do you think there might be some kind of residue that you're accidentally smearing about e.g. build up of product, finger prints, vaping? If so I'd do a wash with washing up liquid, make sure to rinse that off with water and then buff with an e cloth. I can't say I've ever noticed dust on my window so I think it must be sticking to something on your windows

PinotDragon · 14/09/2024 14:48

Pledge furniture polish and a microfiber cloth. I also use it for my mirrors it works wonderfully.

DustyLee123 · 14/09/2024 15:14

Sometimes they are streaky, so I can see the Karcher lines on the window, sometimes tney look dusty. No smoking/vaping in the house, and on a cul-de-sac so little passing traffic.
Ive tried vinegar and washing up liquid with various cloths.
Ill look for specific glass cloths

I use a Karcher, the only thing I have found that does a really good job is the HG dilutable window cleaner in the Karcher spray bottle. Plenty of it and I don't get lines, if I don't use enough spray to soak the window/thing then I get lines.

I only clean them twice a year, if I do a crap job it waits until the next time 😂so not fussy.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/09/2024 15:30
  1. Using a small toffee hammer tap firmly at the corner of each window.
  2. Carefully remove the shattered glass.
  3. People will say "Gosh aren't your windows clean, it's almost like there's no glass in them."
AnOldCynic · 14/09/2024 21:48

😆

Doublesidedstickytape · 14/09/2024 21:49

Purdy and Figg and a microfibre cloth.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/09/2024 05:28

Apart from if windows are filthy, I use a microfibre or e-cloth and just warm water, squeegee off, and buff with a dry cloth. Doesn't take long. I'd be wary of using anything that might leave a film on the window, as then you get smeary windows. I'd never bother with any sort of window cleaning product, water does the job. I do the same with mirrors.

DustyLee123 · 23/09/2024 07:35

I do wonder if it’s the products I’m using, if dust is sticking to them and making the windows look grubby.

Op really hot water, drop of washing up liquid and vinegar. Use a cloth to clean the glass then buff up with scrunched up newspaper

Normal cloths shed fibres, which might be what you're seeing as dust. You need a proper glass cloth. Also, a window vac removes water but you still have to polish afterwards, otherwise there'll still be streaks left. Don't use furniture Polish either, as mentioned above!

DustyLee123 · 23/09/2024 07:41

I’ve used washing up liquid and vinegar, still look grubby soon after

DustyLee123 · 23/09/2024 07:43

My Karcher has a sort of serrated edge, and it leaves lines on the window. Perhaps it’s the dry buffing I need to add in.

We have a Karcher window vac that leaves lines too, it's annoying.

Do you need two Clouseau Minkeys, one wet and then a dry one for buffing? Or does using just the damp one still leave the window streak free?

How? Have you got small children with grubby mitts or animals that sit on the window ledge? I don't understand how a window can otherwise get dirty so quickly.

As I said earlier, I wonder if dust is sticking to what I’m using.

Don’t clean them on a sunny day as you’ll never get rid of the streaks .
