Cast iron casserole in dishwasher?

Rory17384949 · 11/09/2024 19:46

Caught DH about to put the cast iron in the dishwasher (not like I remind him every time!), I rescued it but then was thinking has anyone done this? Would it really be ruined? Could I put it in occasionally for a good clean?

Nope.
I am in charge of my Lodge Dutch Oven.
I let DH cook with it but I rinse and season it every single time.

ladymalfoy45 · 11/09/2024 19:48

My mum put her cast iron pans in the dishwasher. She still regrets it 30 years later.

tarheelbaby · 11/09/2024 19:50

No cast iron in the d/w.
A major point of cast iron is that you cook in it without washing it out fully to build up a coating (seasoning). The d/w will strip off that desirable coating.

tarheelbaby · 11/09/2024 19:52

If your cast iron pot has a good coating it is practially non-stick, you can easily rinse it and wipe it dry. I use mine every day to scramble an egg and rinse it out immediately afterwards.

If others use it, they know to leave it dirty for me to sort. Sometimes, I just add some butter before cooking and that produces a great flavour and then I rinse and wipe as above.

coldcallerbaiter · 11/09/2024 19:55

Yes I put mine in the dishwasher and now it’s orangey and although I assume it is still safe to cook in, everything has an orange sauce on it now. Well I do need iron in my blood!

gingercat02 · 11/09/2024 19:59

My le cruset cast iron has gone in the dishwasher for over 20 years it's grand.

loudbatperson · 11/09/2024 20:00

Nooooo! Never ever put cast iron in the dishwasher.

soupfiend · 11/09/2024 20:01

No, dont do this. I have to hide it from OH as everything goes in the dishwasher and gets ruined

But they're too heavy for me now so I bought the habitat aluminium casserole dishes, much ligher but they do cook quicker

That is also not allowed to go into the dishwasher

Coconutter24 · 11/09/2024 20:02

I ruined mine by putting it in the dishwasher

angelcake20 · 11/09/2024 20:03

I didn't for years (decades) but read on Le Creuset website that they were dishwasher safe so have done so for a couple of years. So much easier and I'm more likely to use them now.

Rory17384949 · 11/09/2024 20:12

Hmmm well sounds like my telling him off was justified then!

I put my le creuset in occasionally. The exposed edge goes rusty afterwards, but the enamel etc is OK.

Mine isn't well seasoned though. I don't use it very often.

MyFlyingCoffeCup · 11/09/2024 20:21

What is this talk of seasoning? How does it work? My LC is about 10 years old and going strong I may have had it in the DW once or twice in that time. I also have a couple of small Sainsbury's ones, I love them, cheap and cheerful. How do I season my pan?

BillieJ · 11/09/2024 21:00

I don't put any cast iron or carbon steel in dishwasher. No chopping boards or kitchen knives ... no Magimix bowl or lid ... It annoys me that there's so much washing up, but I love my Le Creuset and my carbon steel frying pans. Don't want to ruin my wooden boards or my knives.

Nsky62 · 11/09/2024 21:02

Used to have too heavy now, 3.5 slow cooker pot goes in my slimline dishwasher ok.

Onlyonlyonly · 11/09/2024 21:05

Are you talking about enamelled cast iron or the type where you cook on the bare iron? The bare iron must never go in the dishwasher.

The enamelled type like le creuset shouldn't go in according to the manufacturer's instructions but I have been putting mine in the dishwasher for decades with no problems.

Onlyonlyonly · 11/09/2024 21:08

You can rub the bare edge with olive oil.

Enamelled cast iron can't be seasoned. Bare cast iron can.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 11/09/2024 21:14

I do sometimes put my cast iron frying pans through the dishwasher, just oil and heat it up to re-season afterwards, still really non-stick and very good for pancakes. My really old cast iron frying pan I got sand blasted and then re-seasoned when it was looking bad. Like new afterwards took a few goes of oiling and heating to get the really good non stick back.

These threads just remind me of a job I had in a kitchen when I was young, one quiet afternoon I decided to get scrubbing a filthy pan/ shallow wok thing I had seen, took ages and a lot of elbow grease, got it sparkling. Proudly showed it to the chef who was doing stock take, he went grey. It was his Cajun blackening pan he'd been oiling and seasoning for years..... Luckily he was lovely and has taken me under his wing (I'd jumped into the kitchen when 3 juniors called in sick on a fully booked service and I was waitressing), I thought he was going to cry.

Davros · 13/09/2024 00:30

I've never heard of this if there's room, the cast iron goes in the dishwasher

GildedRage · 13/09/2024 00:47

the caustic detergent washes the oily "seasoning" off and rusts the iron turning it rust orange.
it then takes a long long long time to get the slow baked-in oil back onto the surface.
it would take a hell of a lot of patience to resurrect the pan.

isthismylifenow · 15/09/2024 09:01

No chance. I paid a lot for mine and I will treat them as well as I can. Handwashing them is not a great big task anyway. I just soak in a bit of water while I'm doing other things and then the food practically rinses off.

Cecilly · 15/09/2024 10:04

I have an enamel and two bare cast iron pans. All of them go in the dishwasher and have for almost 20 years. They're fine.

Someone in a kitchen I worked in did this. They got the sack!

I had done him a massive favour only a week or so before when 3 kitchen staff didn't show up and I was waitressing and I jumped in to help, so I hadn't had the proper tour/training yet. I think that's the only thing that saved me!
