Does cooking get you down?

God, I hate cooking and find it such a chore trying to plan what to cook every day. It's not that I'm a really bad cook or anything (I'm not great, but passable) and I've tried buying magazines and books to inspire me, but it stills feels like a total weight on my shoulders. Also, even if I do make an effort, I quite often then don't want to eat it, as I'm bored with looking at/smelling/thinking about it by then.

Help! This is really bugging me. When 5pm comes around my heart just sinks

Yes. Never used to but it does now. Mainly because it's not cooking anymore, it's catering.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/04/2008 16:27

Yes - for the same reasons as OrmIrian. (whom I seem to be stalking at the moment)

At the end of 2 weeks school hols I'm sick of deciding what to cook, every day, twice a day, plus breakfast (which in the week doesn't include cooking thank god!)

PeachesMcLean · 18/04/2008 16:29

Scotsgirl I could have written that. Hate it, really horrible chore everyday.

I don't mind cooking for DH so much, he's a bit of a foody and usually enjoys it if I try something a bit different. DS is an absolute chore though. If it's just me and him, I give up and we have left over frozen meals. Usually fish pie cos that's the one thing DH doesn't like, so I bulk cook it and freeze in portions for occasions when it's just me and DS

thornrose · 18/04/2008 16:31

Oh amen to the catering comment. I used to ponce around the kitchen with recipe books, faffing around for ages. Not anymore!

reikizen · 18/04/2008 16:31

Christ, me too. It's the bloody every dayness of it that gets to me. And the figuring out what they will all eat, and trying to make it a balanced diet etc bloody etc...

I so agree. And if i'm this sick of it at 10 years how will i manage another 10. Sick of doing the food shopping and deciding what to buy too. So dull. Would rather iron my face.
But the alternative is dh's meal of oven chips, fish in batter and peas. He would do this every night. God help me.

OrmIrian · 18/04/2008 16:35

DD doesn't much like rice, DS#1 will eat pasta but only spaghetti, DS#1 also won't eat mayo or anything of that sort of texture, or butter unless it's melted, there are 4 veg that all of them will eat, none of them like chilli, some fruit is unacceptable, any sort of offal is verboten, you can't have cheese on top of anything that might go brown and crispy. DS#2 is an angel - he eats everything (very very slooooowly). And no-one really likes cooked puds.

scotsgirl · 18/04/2008 16:43

Oh my word, I have obviously hit a nerve. I remember my best friend in primary school, whose parents bothed worked full time, used to have a 'Monday' meal, 'Tuesday' meal and so on - same thing every week. I can totally see the point of it now, even though I was mildy horrified at the time , but I can't quite bring myself to do it.

oh I hate it all too........most of the time.

I hate having to think of something different every night that we haven'y had too often....I hate having to try and think of something that they will all eat without complaaint, that again, we haven't had too often......and I hate having to think of something that I can eat aswell as the others as I have allergies that are life threatening.

I used to love cooking, and I still do if it for a dinner party (god, that sounds poncy), as adults tend to be very polite and eat what is put in front of them, unlike kiddies!!

I do however like fridays and sunday and fridays are 'take-away or eat out night', and sundays DH does the roast.

crokky · 18/04/2008 16:54

I really hate cooking. I never know what to cook and I am really crap at it. Tonight I am having a microwave meal!!

scotsgirl · 18/04/2008 17:00

Oh Orm, I've only got one husband and one child to cater for, and DH not too fussy (although it has to be healthy). DS only normal child-fussiness, nothing too major. Yes, I know, and I'm still complaining.

Back to the kitchen grindstone

We have a "Monday meal", "Tuesday meal" etc, it does take the pain out of catering. And because we all 4 agreed the plan, at least everyone enjoys every meal (and the repeat internet shopping order is a doddle)

southeastastra · 18/04/2008 17:22

yes i'm not a foodie person, can't be bothered with it at all. really hate all the washing up afterwards too it's like groudhog day

suedonim · 18/04/2008 17:53

Are you and I clones, Scotsgirl? If I could afford one type of help in the house, I'd have a cook. In fact, I'm actually typing this on MN in order to avoid having to go into the kitchen and make something to eat....

sparkleymummy · 18/04/2008 18:02

I can't stand it. By the time we've got the DSs to bed its nearly 8 and I want to eat not cook.

Its ready meals all the way for me I'm afraid

Last night steak diane

Tonight slow roast pork with oriental spices and red cabbage.

Tomorrow have a lovely beef and stilton en croute

I couldn't successfully cook that stuff and look after the family/run the house/hold down a demanding job so I don't bother trying.

barking · 18/04/2008 18:10

Well I've tried being earth mother for the last few years and the tyranny of cooking has finally broken me and I now use the patron saint of knackered mothers St.Michael. The cost of food seems to have caught up with them so when I do buy everything from scratch it actually costs more.
The only problem is even with marks, all the food tastes slightly stale.

maidamess · 18/04/2008 18:11

HATE HATE HATE it.

I would happily feed myself on bagels and peanut butter everyday of the week.

But I realise this is no good for my kids no matter how much they say they want it!

Its the thinking about it that exhausts me.

sparkleymummy · 18/04/2008 18:23

Its definitely just as expensive to make stuff from scratch. I made a moussaka last weekend and it cost FAR more than the rady made one would have. Admittedly it was nicer but its certainly not the cheap option anymore.

scotsgirl · 18/04/2008 18:23

Yes maid! I can stand in the middle of large supermarket and just feel totally stumped. Pathetic isn't it?

OP posts:
moondog · 18/04/2008 18:25

If you hate cooking,do less of it.
No harm in having something like cheese on toast or an omelette a few nights a weeek,

scotsgirl · 18/04/2008 18:28

Moondog, I do that, but DH not impressed. Usually only do if it's just me and DS
