How do people LIVE with fabric softened towels?

Staying in a holiday house. Towels soft and fluffy but so fabric softened that they don't absorb anything. I might as well scrape water off me with a spatula for all the good they do at drying.

Do people do this all the time? I can't cope with this savagery

Just give them a really good vigorous shake before hanging up. Worked on Terry nappies too.

I think my mum puts in more fabric conditioner than powder when washing towels. I can barely HOLD her towels, they are so slippery. I come out the shower and spent just as long trying to get to get try with a water-repelling towel.

You can get non scented fabric conditioner, and I use an eco one which is aloe vera, but in reality doesn't have much scent at all and it certainly doesn't linger on the clothing/towels once they have been line dried. You don't have to use highly scented stuff you know.

I work in a supermarket so I have access to all kinds of fabric conditioners, but I find they all smell. Yes, some have a very faint smell but it still lingers and I'm not a big fan of artificial scents, I don't even like the smell of soap powder so I use a non-scenting detergent. Each to their own though, I just don't like it on my own stuff. And I hold to the fact that those 'scent booster' things are the work of the devil - none of us even like working on the aisle where they are stocked because the smell is so strong!

I know all about the smell of laundry products. I used to sit at a desk in a shop which sold laundry products in bulk and I was just across the aisle from them, and they really smelled.

However, yesterday I washed a load of towels with my eco fabric condition - i discovered I'm actually using critus rather than aloe vera - and I just took a good sniff of the towels. They don't have even the merest hint of critus smell, they simply smell liked washing line dried in the wind. I don't live in the UK, my washing goes outside all year round. I admit that if washing is not dried outside then it probably does hold onto the scent, however my towels have no scent (but they are soft).

Might be down to sensitivity. I am really sensitive to some smells - but not to others, oddly. I can smell people's clothes washed with conditioner when they walk past me and even the unscented smells quite strongly to me. Other things I can't smell so well. So, I guess we all have our preferences.

1/2 cup white vinegar makes them soft.

Thanks! Do they smell vinegary though?
I don’t use fabric softener any more either -It also destroys dogs Equafleece coats and jumpers ( Whippet ).

DS was allergic to fabric softeners- that’s why I stopped using them.
I also love the harsh feel of fresh cotton sheets that have blown on the washing line- Fabric softener ruins that fresh summery outdoors scent.
