How do people LIVE with fabric softened towels?

Haroldwilson · 26/08/2024 22:28

Staying in a holiday house. Towels soft and fluffy but so fabric softened that they don't absorb anything. I might as well scrape water off me with a spatula for all the good they do at drying.

Do people do this all the time? I can't cope with this savagery

I dont use fabric softener on towels or underwear. I use a cap of vinegar on rinse cycle.

Fabric softener is full of chemicals. Chemicals are not just bad for your skin but awful for your health and lead to conditions like asthma. Can't understand why anyone would want to use it on towels.

Water is also full of "chemicals". And all soap.

Waitingfordoggo · 26/08/2024 22:59

I’m team crunchy.

mrstea301 · 26/08/2024 22:59

Sorry for a daft question - do you put the vinegar into the drum of the washing machine or into the fabric conditioner bit (next to the soap powder)?

Everything is chemicals.

invisiblecat · 26/08/2024 23:03

I have found my people😂

BiscuityBoyle · 26/08/2024 23:03

Waitrose do conditioner that is suitable for towels. I use it on my towels and have never had a problem.

Geppili · 26/08/2024 23:04

Team crunchy too! They absorb so well and exfoliate!

Do you realise that water is a chemical?

So it only works if you have a tumble dryer?

I think it definitely helps but I did have a boyfriend who didn’t have a tumble drier and never used fabric conditioner. He had lovely soft towels so it’s not 100% down to the tumble drier. You probably have to do it from the towels being brand new and in a soft water area to get the same effect though.

Georgethecat1 · 26/08/2024 23:06

Don’t shoot me…im a soft towel with fabric conditioner user.

veritasverity · 26/08/2024 23:07

Dunno, I love a fabric softener towel, but I don't use very much, and I don't have a problem with non-absorbency, maybe some softeners or types of water change the absorbency ratio!
I can't stand microfibres towels though, they never seem to absorb water and I definitely don't use softener on them.

In the fabric conditioner dispenser 😊

Just put it in the drawer instead of fab con. Doesn't make clothes smell at all and cleans the washing machine at the same time so you never get the slimy, mouldy build up that you do from fab con.

I also air dry a lot of clothes rather than tumble dry and they are still soft when washed with vinegar.

I use fabric softener. It doesn't make my towels very soft, but they are certainly softer than if I hadn't used it, and they dry me perfectly well.

I could well ask "How do people LIVE with un softened towels?" I can't stand rough towels, horrible things.

VelvetButCold · 26/08/2024 23:11

I suspect it’s either the type of towels you have, or the type of water hardness you have.

I have some very thin bath sheet towels from IKEA, great to get dry, and nice to use, as well as some lovely thicker lovely quality M&S ones, but both are absolutely fine when washed with fabric conditioner.

All cotton

There aren’t many non cotton towels available, but this might be a possible factor.

Jl2014 · 26/08/2024 23:14

😂😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/08/2024 23:14

I don't have a tumble drier and I don't use fabric softener. I like the 'slightly starched' feel of bedding that's line dried in the wind, and the 'cat's tongue' feel of rough towels.

I hate the smell of fabric softener. If I want to smell flowers, I'll put flowers in the bedroom, I don't want them shoved up my nose whenever I turn over.

DiscoBeat · 26/08/2024 23:15

I hate fabric softener. Completely unnecessary, and don't get me started on the 'dream team scent boosters'. Such a waste of money and plastic.

Jl2014 · 26/08/2024 23:15

Haroldwilson · 26/08/2024 22:45

Usually I just endure the cardboard phase like a monk accepting his admonishment. I use a towel for about a week, one day of that is penance.

It’s the exfoliation phase

Cornflakelover · 26/08/2024 23:19

I use white vinegar baking soda and fabric freshener 😂
towels smell lush and are nice and fluffy

PangolinPan · 26/08/2024 23:19

Team tumble drier here but DP washes with fabric conditioner 🤮

I swear it traps the wet into the towel, and given he has three showers a day, his towel is often honking after a couple of days use.

(The three showers are on getting up, before the gym and after the gym. We have some kind of solar water heating so it's free. Don't come at me)

GoldenLegend · 26/08/2024 23:19

Vabenejulio · 26/08/2024 22:37

I love a crunchy towel, me.

Exfoliate! EXFOLIATE!!! E X F O L I A T E ! ! !

timenowplease · 26/08/2024 23:24

Agreed. Likewise bedding. Stinking of chemicals and slimy.
