How much is your water bill ...

SnoopySnoopDoggIsTheBest · 15/08/2024 09:21

Just that really ... we are 3 in a 3 bed flat ... we are having a 'discussion' about our Water Bill as it seems to be getting more and more every month!

It has been on average £75 per month for the last year but this month our bill is approx £90.00!

Is this normal or do we have a leak?

All 3 working from home too ...

I guess someone has to pay for all the bonuses all the Water bosses seem to be giving themselves!

both of us at home all day here…

two adults, 2 kids, 5 bed house.

£60 ish a month. That’s no watering of the garden or car washing

Bjorkdidit · 15/08/2024 09:42

Too many variables to make a worthwhile comparison with anyone else.

Can you see if your usage has increased? Presumably you're on a meter rather than rates? What percentage was your bill increased in April? Is the bill accurate or an estimate? Is your toilet constantly refilling? That's sometimes an issue.

If you google 'water usage calculator' you could get an idea what your usage should be and how this compares with what it actually is. Plus your water company website should have a link to report suspected leaks.

And this is why MUMSNET rocks!

Thank You!

We do have an issue with the loo ... sounds like we have a House DJ in the bathroom as the pump keeps making a noise that is reminiscent of my House Clubbing days!

THANK YOU @Bjorkdidit you have solved the mystery I am sure!

It makes sense now ...

... but I still think our Water Bill which is on average £75 pcm is way, way too high now I have done a few comparisons!

We are THREE adults in a THREE bed flat in Zone 2 in London ... we were not paying this much a year ago for sure ...

This month it has gone up to £90!

Or is it just THAMES WATER who are charging a fortune!

Well, hopefully we will get to the bottom of it very soon!

When you’ve fixed the running toilet, ask your water company if they do a leak allowance where you get a refund for the extra usage. Wessex Water did this for me.

Wowzel · 15/08/2024 19:46

In a 4 bed house ours is currently 115 a month and I hate it!

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/08/2024 19:48

£28 a month. 3 bed, we both wfh. On a meter.

thursdaymurderclub · 15/08/2024 19:48

£34 a month.. 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 3 adults.. shift workers

Cas112 · 15/08/2024 19:51

Have you checked for leaks? In toilet or pipes anywhere?

This is what caused my water bill to increase. When leak found my bill reduced over £20

SnoopySnoopDoggIsTheBest · 15/08/2024 20:15

Tomorrow I will once again be on the phone to THAMES WATER!

We had a Smart Meter fitted last year and since then it has gone MENTAL!

I obviously have more research to do!

Thank You MN!

£45 a month, 4 adults, washing machine x 1, dishwasher x 1, shower x4 a day, no one WFH. It goes down to £35 when DS is at uni and comes back up over the summer.

FedUpMumof10YO · 15/08/2024 20:27

£21 per month. 3 of us. 4 bed, 3 storey.

jay55 · 15/08/2024 20:29

£90 for six months. I live alone, have a rain shower but don't take baths.

Mountainclimber50 · 15/08/2024 20:33

3 Adults.

DC home from Uni £90 to £100 a month.

DC at Uni £50 to £60 a month.

No car wash or watering the garden.

Loads of laundry and showers.

Still cheaper than the equivalent we would pay without a meter based on our house grading.

I believe it can vary depending on which water company covers your area. Our water company is a high charging one.

Tulipvase · 15/08/2024 20:41

Those paying 20/30 a month, surely half that is the standing charge equivalent?

We pay 72 quid for 5 people in a 4 bed. One is off to uni soon so hope it brings it down a bit.

Autumn1990 · 15/08/2024 20:41

Water costs have suddenly gone up. So have a good look at the bill and make sure you’re not being charged for something you shouldn’t be. I suddenly got charged for sewerage when we shouldn’t be.
The quickest way to check for a leak is to check the meter before you go out then check it as soon as you come back in.

Not necessarily. Some small terrace houses with no/tiny gardens still on rates have very low water costs. Our old house was £12 a month, granted this was some time ago, but it was quite a shock when we moved to our current house and water rates were almost £40 pm.

Yes, ours doubled when we were compulsorily metered (3 bed terrace). But we decided to look at it as having had ten years of half price water previously and saving a fortune.

SnoopySnoopDoggIsTheBest · 15/08/2024 20:50

Thank you for all of this ... it is all so very helpful.

THAMES WATER do have those big bonuses to pay!

I will report back!

Ah right, are the waste water charges etc dependent on house size? I assumed they were a standard price.

Actually.
i assume it’s based on the amount of water used……. That would make more sense lol!

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 15/08/2024 21:08

We're south east water and they can't get a monthly average right, 6 months beginning of last year £45 a month, last half of year £1 a month, now £59 a month for next 6 months, 2 adults 3 bed house, been in house 20+ years always the same, the bills yo-yo from sublime to ridiculous
Arnt Thames water in serious debt, I think you might be contributing to paying their debt off!

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/08/2024 22:05

Ours went down when we got a meter. But it was years ago so no clue what we used to pay. It seems we have a bit of a bargain as I do a lot of laundry with small kids, they bath frequently, we have a garden.

SnoopySnoopDoggIsTheBest · 16/08/2024 12:13

So we are :

3 Adults, 1 F, 2 M all WFH
Small 3 bed flat
Supplier - Thames Water
Meter - installed about 6 months ago

3 x Showers a day - 2 x 15' / 1 x 30'

Washing M/C - 1 x 2 per day

Dishwasher - 1 x a day

I need to look at what we paid before the meter was installed ... definitely was not £75 and now £90 per month!

I am about to call Thames Water ... oh joy!

Does the shower figure relate to number of minutes?
