Boring but what do you use to get white bedding really white?

I have some pure cotton white bedding that isn't looking as white as I'd like. Long story but Ex had allergies and I could only wash with Surcare. Now on my own and I'd like to revive it. No painful memories attached to it and it's just plain white and good quality. So basically what do i do with it?

Ta muchly 🙂

Soak it in Napisan

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 20:15

Cheers, soak in a bucket and then put through a wash (60?) with normal washing liquid?

I soak whites in a bleach bath now and then

Sparrowball · 10/08/2024 20:27

Whatever method you use dry it outside in the sun.

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 20:34

Thanks everyone, we've not seen much sun in Scotland so far but it's meant to be bright and warm tomorrow so thinking I'll give it a go.

Good luck with it, there's nothing like crisp white bed linen.

Cookerhood · 10/08/2024 20:47

I use powder (better for whites as it has a brightening agent in it, I don't think liquids fo.
I put on a scoop of vanish or green bleach, which I think is what's in Napisan (not regular bleach, it's bad for the cotton fibres).
Never wash anything non white with them. Hang on the line if you can.

Goodgriefisitginfizzoclock · 10/08/2024 20:51

Bio powder I’m sure I read on here it has bleaching agents that can’t be stabilised in the liquid washing detergents ( I may have made that up but I think I remember from a ama thread) wash on cold cycle , I’m converted to cold cycles for washing genuinely thinking get better results, just do super hot wash to clean machine when it tells me to

Belindabelle · 10/08/2024 20:52

Only ever wash with other white items
Always wash at 60’ plus
Use powder not liquid/gel/tabs
Pop a couple of Dr Beckman Glow white sachets in now and again.

InSpainTheRain · 10/08/2024 21:09

I use vanish oxi for whites, I never wash them with any other washing.

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 21:10

Thanks all, I just nipped out to buy napisan and co-incidentally I picked up some glowhite sachets at the same time. I have two king sets and 8 pillowslips so might split it into two and I have a soak feature and timer on my machine - neither of which I've used before but thinking to set it all up tonight so it's done for when I get up and hopefully get it out nice and early. If I can' figure out the timer then I'll just put it on when I get up (prob about 7ish) but the proper cycle with a soak looks like it'll take 3 and half hours.

What temperature do you use?

That ama was linked in a recent thread, you remember correctly. The poster recommended a liquid for colours specifically because of the absence of brightening agents.

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 21:13

I don't think I have any powder anymore and what I had wasn't biological anyway. I was just so glad to be able to use anything else other than surcare for the first time in decades I gave it all away with him when he moved out and got myself a huge bottle of Costco finest 😂

Ace white liquid. Soak. Then wash in washing machine with some fairy liquid, oxi white powder and you're usual detergent and softener. Then a full day on the line.

The ace sometimes reacts with chemicals on the bedding and goes pink but bleaches out in the daylight.

Napisan is good too. We brought a 35 year old christening gown back to life with napisan.

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 21:37

Thanks all. I've put in the least white cover and the least white pillowslips with a Dr beckhams, a scoop of napisan and my current detergent and set it to come on at 6am tomorrow on a 3 hour 60 degree wash with a presoak. Hopefully get it out all day if the bloody rain gives us a break. I'll report back when it's dry and I've compared it to the other one which to be fair didn't look as dingy.

Yes report back. Any chance of a before and after photo.

BeaRF75 · 10/08/2024 21:47

I send mine to the laundry..... so much easier than faffing around at home!

MrsMitford3 · 10/08/2024 21:48

I use napisan and ecover bleach.

Nothing beats drying on the line in the sun!!

Belindabelle · 10/08/2024 21:49

FFS. No offense OP but what the hell. It’s Saturday night. I am giving laundry tips and asking for photos.

They are now locked in the machine but I'll do an after and you'll have to take my word for it. 😂

Ace clothes bleach for whites - I second this, It's really good.
Used to be £1 a bottle but it's now around £2

Don't put it on a hot wash if you are using bio detergent, it just denatures the enzymes!

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 10/08/2024 21:54

I’ve become a fairly recent convert to greener cleaning in general and no longer use chlorine bleach. I’m amazed at the effect of “green” bleach - percarbonate of soda. I’ve also been using a longer, colder cycle and sometimes soaking overnight.

If that interests you, have a look at Nancy Birtwhistle on IG.

Nsky62 · 10/08/2024 21:55

Been easier to dye it, no white bedding here, especially with dearest cat

😂😂 Sorry! This is my life now, trying to sort my house out now that the lazy gobshite has his own midden to mess up and stink up.

I'm on a fortnight holiday and all I've done in my first week is declutter, clean and take trips to the tip/recycling/re-use hub. Most of which was stuff he left behind. I'll need another tip run before the bins go on strike next week.

Adult DS who lives at home has been a superstar helping and cut the grass etc today.

Rock and roll Saturday nights for the foreseeable for me... 😂😎
