Is there a quick way to put a duvet cover on?

I'm sure there's some secret trick to make this easier, but since I grew up in a house with sheets & blankets, I have no one to pass on this knowledge to me (as if dh would know!). Each time I struggle with our super king duvet, I wonder whether there has to be a better way....

Turn the cover inside out.
Burrow your hands down into the (inside out) bottom corners.
Grab hold of the bottom corners of the duvet.
Shake.

(Helps if you're tall).

snickersnack · 14/04/2008 21:44

What PuhPeng says. No other way to do it. Stand on the bed if necessary to help with shaking...

Divastrop · 14/04/2008 21:44

turn it inside out,put it on top of the duvet, put your hands inside it and grab the far corners of both the duvet and cover then pick it up and let the cover fall onto the duvet.
that probably makes no sense but its how i do it and takes me about 1 minute at the most.

Twiglett · 14/04/2008 21:45

inside out .. shove your hands inside the opening and grab the 2 opposite corners

then grab the 2 corners of the duvet itself

and shake and shake and the duvet cover will turn itself the right way up as the duvet goes into it

you will have to put the other 2 corners in the bottom half and do it up then give it another shake

but really it's quick

Divastrop · 14/04/2008 21:45

x posts...yeah,like i said but in english.

geordieminx · 14/04/2008 21:46

YES YES YES!!!!

See if I can explain without sounding lik a fool...

Turn duvet cover inside ou
Put arms inside cover - one hand on each corner (obv the ones that dont have the opening)
With hands inside cover still grab opposite corners of quilt
Shake vigourously so the duvet cover goes over the top of the quilt..

God it sounds really complicated doesnt it? It works though

tiredandgrumpy · 14/04/2008 21:46

Thanks - thought it had something to do with turning it inside out. Have definitely being doing it wrong all these years!

Bollcks - x-posted with all you quicker typers grrrr

Twiglett · 14/04/2008 21:47

here it is on video

Crunchie · 14/04/2008 21:50

nah don't bother with the inside out lark - FAR TOO MUCH SHAAKING!!

Lay duvet cover out on the bed, duvet at your feet, grab a corner of the duvet, and feed it ito the cover until you reach the far corner, hold this corner whlst you grab 2nd corner of duvet and do the same, - then shake . Job done. I do a superking in a couple of minutes and I am short

stuffitllama · 14/04/2008 21:56

do it over the bannisters, jolly quick then

ellingwoman · 14/04/2008 22:06

I was fascinated by the 'T-shirt folding machine' video on Twiglett's link. Am seriously thinking of making one. Sad or what?

Furball · 14/04/2008 22:09

ahem! - I have a tshirt folding machine, thank you very much!! I made it last year when we went on holiday and have kept it in the suitcase for next year. It's fabola and makes all the clothes look like they should be on a shelf in Bennetton.

tortoise · 14/04/2008 22:12

I do the same as Crunchie. Doesn't take long at all.

hippipotami · 14/04/2008 22:13

I do it the same as crunchie. But instead of holding onto the first corner whilst I insert the second corner, I ensure the first corner does not slip out of place by placing a clothes peg on it.

I can do a kingsize duvet on my own in 3mins max.

ellingwoman · 14/04/2008 22:13

I was just covering myself there Furball

Do the t-shirts really come out that good? If so, I think I will set dd3 a project for making one next time she says she's bored.

Furball · 14/04/2008 22:15

they reaaly do ellingwoman. Top tip use thick cardboard like an old tv or computer box

seeker · 14/04/2008 22:16

This is my only talent.

Put the duvet cover into the wash inside out. Put hands inside clean inside out cover and find the corners away from the opening. Grab the bottom corners of the duver through the gap in the dirty cover. Shake like mad. This way you put on new cover and take of old cover simultaneously.

Psychomum5 · 14/04/2008 22:19

ummm.....I wash the whole lot.....duvet cover and duvet still covered, dry still intact, and then when fully aired stick back on bed.

I had too covered duvets in the airing cupboard as I type too!!!!

in fact tho, tis only for DS2 that this happens for as he is still the one who wets himself occasionally at night and when he does, soaks thro everything! I found just shoving the whole lot in was massively easier, and carried on doing so.

it at least means that none of the others can complain about having his (apparently manky) duvet (so says the 14yo DD!) as all his are obvious from the cover's.

as for the rest of ours........inside out jobs

roisin · 14/04/2008 22:23

The quick way is to get the kids to do it!
Seriously, I taught my boys the 'inside out trick', and they can both change their sheets and duvet covers super-quick.

DS2 is only 8 and he can manage no probs - single and double.

(They get cooked breakfast on a Sunday once a fortnight if they change all the bedding!)

Divastrop · 14/04/2008 22:29

roisin-can you come and teach mine?i've tried many times but they end up in a tangled mess

hippipotami · 14/04/2008 22:31

Wow, seeker, I love that!! That is very, sorry I mean very impressive and will try that when I change the dc's beds tomorrow

seeker · 14/04/2008 22:39

Hippo - it is ridiculously satisfying. Practice on single ones first.

nametaken · 15/04/2008 00:32

Ah I don't even bother with a duvet cover. I replaced all our duvets last year with very expensive siberian goose down filling and high thread count covers (I mean the cover over the feathers, not a duvet cover) - made sure they were machine washable and tumble dryable and that's all I use.

I just got totally fed up trying to iron a king size duvet cover on a domestic size ironing board.

WendyWeber · 15/04/2008 00:50

I do it over the banisters like stuffitllama. (Cover inside out first)

If you have no banisters, stand on the bed first. Or a chair.

nametaken, you iron bedding???
